I noticed that there's a "sortorder" notepad in Beware's DDR Extreme Theme which sorts the Group folders in order
can someone help me, I'm so curious on how I can do that

I believe this only works on 3.9+ and/or SM4. Search the stepmania.com forums, I remember seeing a post that covered its use.

You may be referring to preferred sort, which allows you to sort all of the songs any way you wish.
I do not know if it is in bewares or not ( it may be ), but it is in 3.9+ ( if I remember correctly ), 3.95, and SM-SSC

So how do you set a preferred Group sort order?

A preferred sort goes into the theme folder, then Other as "SongManager PreferredSongs.txt"
example:
Default/Other/SongManager PreferredSongs.txt
the text file contains
---DDR 1st Mix
DDR 1st Mix/My Fire/
---DDR Extreme
DDR 8th Mix -Extreme-/Twinbee/
---Remixes
Remixes/Max 300 Cally & Juice Mix
---(Anything) defines a Group in Preferred Sort, the songs preceeding them adds them to that group.
example:
Default/Other/SongManager PreferredSongs.txt
the text file contains
---DDR 1st Mix
DDR 1st Mix/My Fire/
---DDR Extreme
DDR 8th Mix -Extreme-/Twinbee/
---Remixes
Remixes/Max 300 Cally & Juice Mix
---(Anything) defines a Group in Preferred Sort, the songs preceeding them adds them to that group.

Is there a variable/wildcard term which would tell sm-ssc to just include all songs found in that group, so each song doesn't have to be listed?
(for example, you might have a nice list of songs, but if you're missing a couple from a group, they won't show up at all - then have sm-ssc just dump them at the end of the list?)

I don't think is at this point. I could be totally wrong in the fact that Beware's extreme uses this sort— I haven't used it in ages and I don't have it on me to test. if you can find it i'll gladly find how it did it so you can replicate it.

where should I put this to customize song sorting?

The "Other" folder of where the current theme you're using resides, or if you want it to be applied to every theme, the Default theme's folder.

this is what I got right now
file name: SongManager PreferredSongs.txt
---Replicant D-action/
Replicant D-action/Pierce The Sky/
Replicant D-action/Sakura Sunrise/
Replicant D-action/Shiny World/
Replicant D-action/New Decade/
Replicant D-action/Anti-Matter/
Replicant D-action/POSSESSION/
now the way it shows is...
Anti-Matter
New Decade
Pierce The Sky
POSSESSION
Sakura Sunrise
Shiny World
i don't think its working for me. I'm using 3.95+
EDIT: Does this ignore the "alphabetical letter" first rule? ex: A, B, C, - C, B, A, etc.

to sillybear,
1. Are you using 3.95+ or SM-SSC?
2. Did you put the file in "other" or within the DDR X2 folder?

i'm using 3.9 + REDUX... i have my own way of sorting these songs but i consider it informal... This only applies to my X2 folder only. It is different from the way mentioned earlier by midiman.

*has an ah-ha moment* Methinks this this is the very instruction code I've been looking for. I'm going to test this out.

What did you do? I'd be interested in custom sorting on a per folder only basis.

you have to modify your folder's sm files...
in my case, i add at least 2 characters before the main title under TITLETRANSLIT code like:
#TITLETRANSLIT:[2 extra charcters] [main song title];
for licensed songs--- add 2 numerical characters in ascending order,
examples:
#TITLETRANSLIT:01 Be Your Wings;
#TITLETRANSLIT:02 Bonafide Lovin';
for New KOes--- no modification so it will be automatically arranged right after licensed songs
for CS DDR imports (displays after New KOes):
#TITLETRANSLIT:zv [main song title];
for BEMANI imports (displays after CS DDR imports):
#TITLETRANSLIT:zw [main song title];
for BOSS songs (displays after BEMANI imports):
#TITLETRANSLIT:zx [main song title];
for ES/RDA songs (displays after BOSS Songs):
#TITLETRANSLIT:zy [main song title];
for EES Songs (displays after ES/RDA songs):
#TITLETRANSLIT:zz [main song title];
misc: if you want a non-alphabetical order for RDA group just add a number after zy like:
#TITLETRANSLIT:zy1 Shiny World;
#TITLETRANSLIT:zy2 Sakura Sunrise;
#TITLETRANSLIT:zy3 Pierce The Sky;
#TITLETRANSLIT:zy4 Anti-Matter;
#TITLETRANSLIT:zy5 New Deacde;
#TITLETRANSLIT:zy6 POSSESSION;
Under Select Music Screen, press F9 button to switch between Native or Romanized text in songwheel banner to get rid of the first extra characters.
cons: they will alter the arrangement when you sort them by ABC aside from GROUP sort.
That's the reason i chose to apply that in my DDR X2 folder only.

Well, if you'd prefer not to mess with your ABC song sort, you can do this instead for Preferred sort:
http://pastebin.com/55tH6P9z
(I realize I'm missing songs, also renamed/moved some songs. I couldn't find good videos of the arcade songlists.)
Problem is that you have to do it manually, sm is not going to catch any songs you forgot. Text Tools in foobar2000 helps a lot with this, actually. (import a folder of songs, export text as "DDR SuperNOVA2/%directory%")
I'm also not sure how you change text color.
Also, apparently you can only include a song once in Preferred Sort, or else funny things happen to your groups.
EDIT: If anyone knows where Poseidon(kors k mix) goes in the X2 songlist, that'd be awesome. All the youtube videos either cut off the music wheel (stop doing that!), or are using ABC sort.

sillybear I like your trick haha: very clever use of transliteration!
as for neo that's pretty nice of you to make a compilation of recent songs
( sidenote, you can use # as comments for preferred sort stuff )
