I'll just throw it out here:
Thread bumping is allowed and people shouldn't jump on people who bump threads with actual useful information.
People will see this notice when they post in a really old thread:
Only if the post is irrelevant and doesn't add to the conversation at all, may you raise the issue in the forums.
People shouldn't ridicule other people in the forums even if they post a useless post. Otherwise you'll only lead to the demise of the forums in general.

Rygon is a good example of this predicament. Everytime someone bumps a thread - which, to me, shows that they read through the forums, instead of making a new thread - he goes and replies with a "really? was it necessary?" without bothering to read the post and the thread itself to judge whether or not he should reply.
You should only reply if you have something to add to the conversation. I have stopped posting in major threads because I know well ahead of time that I don't post anything relevant to add to the conversation. Anything that comes to mind, I say it in the chat to those that are in there.
Another issue that I foresee happening is that a new user creates a thread to avoid bumping an old thread. But what happens is that someone will direct him/her to the older thread, and troll the new user for a bit. But if they bump the old thread to start the conversation anew, they get trolled either way, so it's a lose/lose situation for the new member, and keeps potential new users at bay because of the idiotic replies.

Silent is right about that whole "was that necessary" crap that Rygon does; that's like.... wow, I actually can't think of a comparison. But whatever. It's dumb.
At the same time, some people are still way too jumpy about people bumping threads. On at least one occasion, I have seen someone bump a thread with relevant information that actually added to the discussion, and they ended up getting -5'd and chastised anyway.

Ditto. Saw this a lot especially when I was just getting started here. A couple times, I wanted to post and mention that the info was useful, but didn't want to throw myself on the fire too :/

Look, I'm sorry if I'm jumping the gun on the new users whose bumping really old threads. I just couldn't really stand the fact that some people don't really know any better and I just rant on them and tell them that what they did was unnecessary. Seriously, after what I did, I felt kinda stupid and unforgiving.

Singling out rgtm was pretty unneccesary and has the same exact negative effect as rediculing someone of bumping a thread. Many others do it to, some of which have even posted in this thread...

I saw the useless bumps and the "useless bump is useless" line several times when it was freshly posted. I wanted to post something but I keep it to myself. Moments later, I see someone posting my exact response I was thinking of (most of the time).
It's like I think it and you guys do it. Awesome. In any case, slaps on the hand and apologies were given out.
Besides, the lose/lose cycle that silent spoke of could have been avoided by just evaluating the uber-bump post and whether or not it was worth it. First offenses don't have to be mobbed either.

You can't be serious...
If it's someone doing something on the level of Pit and Rednek, course they should get yelled at, but when someone gets called an idiot out of the blue in a thread for doing something thats only mildly irritating at worst, that's not constructive feedback, it's elitism. It had no purpose whatsover other than to be hostile.

His conduct has been pointed out multiple times in the past when it has happened. You call it elitism; I call it conditioning. I call it "actually showing some muscle on an issue." rgtm is known for showing an absurd amount of hostility to new members and the issue of scaring people away has been a concern for a while now.
For some people it's not just "mildly irritating." It's disruptive and doesn't belong.

Well, another thing to consider, especially with new users, is that while this is old news to us, it's ALL new to a user that hasn't been here before. In fact, isn't that the entire point to why forums don't auto-flush posts over a month old/untouched?
I do agree that the double-burn thing is completely uncool, though.

This problem is basically why I never go and bump a thread even though I would really want to. Due to someone (And now I'm not referring to any user in particular) having no sense of respect even though the bump actually DID contain something that makes the thread worth bumping, I'm doing that thing very, very seldom.
What's worse is that this behavior also seems to spread like a disease, causing almost everyone here that has been here for a while to write something in the style of elitism back to the bumper. As far as I know, RGTM is definitely not the ONLY one who was done things like that.
And also, the lose/lose factor that Silenttype mentioned is just another evidence of how cruel we could be/are towards new members these days.

As much of a dick move this may sound, I sorta agree with Bolt. I mean, yeah, it may be a bit strong towards a user if they're new, but it isn't THAT hard to check the date of the last post, surely? And surely just a little 'check the date of the last post in future' isn't too harsh for a first time thing, no?

I feel that this community tends to massively derail some threads with entire streams of posts that are devoted to lambasting some individual for a relatively minor infraction. This doesn't seem to happen as much lately (maybe I just don't read the right threads). Anyway, people just need to chill; if someone does something wrong, tell them what they did and why it's wrong and move on. We only need one person to do this, and unless they're a repeat offender who is clearly trolling, try to be understanding and helpful. Even if what they're doing isn't wrong and it's just a misunderstanding (i.e. bumping old thread with new discussion), if you point it out less caustically it won't seem like a personal attack.

goddammit it really doesn't matter what forum community issue the thread is aimed to tackle, every time it turns into a discussion about how elitist this place can be, how this place scares off new members and sometimes the derailment of threads.
it's an endless topic. we have it all the time but we never seem do anything about it. it's a shame.

i made most of my points regarding this topic in the chat and i dont feel like repeating myself too much (mainly because im tethering my phone right now to post this. hoping 3g can last this long)
as i said to viper earlier, elitism is going to exist in the forums whether people approve of it or not. people that offer more to the community are going to get more respect. people that are able to befriend others more are going to get more respect. there is no avoiding that. its a part of any social organisation. if you dont like it, deal with it, or even change the way you do things to take advantage of it. DONE AND DONE.
