About around when DDR X was coming out someone mentioned here that fans in Japan had zeroed in on how the new 1-20 ratings translated from 1-10 ratings. It wasn't a simple x2 formula, the further away from 1 you got the starker the difference was. Can anyone re-quote that information or remember where it came from? Also, was it more or less accepted as accurate or was it just a good guess?

I think it was about like this (at least for the higher end):
7 > 8-10
8 > 10-11
9 > 12-14
10 > 15+
TimeHollow
went from 6 to 8 and Fascination MAXX
went from 4 to 8 (I think), but I don't know any of the other difficulty changes for easier songs/charts.
7 > 8-10
8 > 10-11
9 > 12-14
10 > 15+
TimeHollow

I agree with everything but I'd say 12s are the harder 8s, like Blind Justice.7 > 8-10
8 > 10-11
9 > 12-14
10 > 15+
TimeHollow

Also beginner songs have mostly been rated based on their speed, rather than difficulty. so it's like their own scale
and i guess any of these conversions are just fan approximations, it's not like there's any official word

12s are like hard 8s/easy 9s. ORION.78 (AMeuro-MIX), BROKEN MY HEART, BE LOVIN' are all 12s.

Multiplication factor 1.5 is a good rule of thumb.
Of course some songs were adjusted, and there's no rigid difficulty change (i.e. Matsuri J-Summer mix was a 10 on the beta cabs and was then just removed. Should have been a 14). Each has some flexibility, and some of the charts weren't adjusted well even on final cabs.
6s -> 9 on X
7s -> 10.5 (~10-11) on X
8s -> 12
9s -> 13.5 (~13-14) on X
10s+ --> 15+ on X

11s are definitely not 7s, they're 8s.

There are tons of 7s that were changed over to 11s, and many of the 11s on X should be 7s. .59, D2R, Celebrate Nite, Come Clean, Fly Away, Give Me Up, and many others (even Ballad for You) are in this list. Again, this is not a hard-and-fast conversion factor, but it's pretty good and allows expandability on the higher end of the scale.

You have to remember that Konami is pretty bad with re-rating a lot of songs though. They consider MOONSTER, CSFILSM, and MAKE IT BETTER all the same difficulty in X.

I agree with the consensus here; hard 8s and easy 9s are now 12s, typical 9s are 13s, those easy 10s are 14s (which should have been 9s anyway, when they were calling PARANOIA survivor the same difficulty as PARANOiA ~HADES~).
To me, 11 is the typical 8, and 10 is where you get easy 8s and harder 7s.

Basically there's overlap now.
6: 7-8
7: 9-10
8: 10-12
9: 12-14
10: 14+

7: 9-10

What they said. Multiplying by 1.5 is a pretty decent rule unless you play mostly Standard or easier charts, and then you probably don't care too much about the rerating anyway
A few notes from my experience:
14's X-scale are definitely catas.
Flashing tens don't really begin until the 17's X-scale. There's a gigantic wall between 16's and 17's (which is where I'm stuck now).
I don't think anybody's found a hard-and-fast rule (or even something remotely consistent) for converting anything lower than a 6 old scale.

This.After all, we can't forget Venus and Sunkiss Drop on Heavy. I think the only misratings that were worse than those were Paranoia Hades Standard and the 9 difficulty Light charts in SuperNova 1.

But remember, Soul Crash
was an 8, and now a 13 in the new rating system.

SOUL CRASH was more of a 9, the SuperNOVA CS songs were mostly underrated.. Fly away -mix del matador- an 8? Hah.
They fixed a lot of bad old ratings with the re-ratings, like those songs, and pretty much everything in SuperNOVA2.

Correct me if I am wrong but...
On the Bounce is a "16"...
SWAI is a "17"...
So why are LoM and MaXX Unlimited 15's?

Because I passed LoM and MaXX long before OTB, and I still haven't passed SWAI

But seriously, there's a discernible jump in difficulty between those songs. 316 BPM Afronova = not for me.

So basically the new ratings can be and are just as off as the old ratings could. Yeah, I kinda figured that looking as some of them and going "that song is not that hard" or "that is not just a 10". But for the most part they've spliced some of the old rating levels into the new ones not behaving like a split from the old ratings but a totally new split that doesn't even take the old rating into account.
So besides this no one really knows how the lower ratings go? I've noticed a couple songs that were a 2 on BASIC and are now a 4. But that seems to be too much of a difference if, according to what I remember reading, many 1s are still 1s and some 2s are still 2s.
