For lack of a more age appropriate word, I'm just going to call it Glove Wearing.
I was down at the strip, and there was this girl playing Pop'n at an arcade I was going to, and she was pretty good, except that she couldn't play a song without Wearing.
I think using speed mods does make the game easier, and adds a necessity for heightened reflexes, although you could just go the long way and memorize a song to freak people out by playing that song on invisible. I personally won't use them unless it's impossible to read the notes otherwise.
But the need for Wearing is like a trashy romance novel telling itself that it teaches sound virtues. I mean, SURE, you CAN say you're capable of beating a level 42 demon, but where's the pride in that if you can't do it without Wearing the gloves?
YES, I do know that people who CAN beat demons without Wearing prefer to wear anyway. YES, I'll acknowledge than even if I wear, I can't do more than an 21, and that's pushing it. But I could beat 21s WITHOUT Glove Wearing (some of them).
I bring this up because although the girl I mentioned was nice, the two Chinese-ish kids with spiky hair and white sweaters made fun of me for playing my custom level 18s and 19s freestyle, even though they could hardly beat Sig Sig while Wearing.
I apologize if there was a past post, but I never read it, never saw it, and it'd obviously be past the 6 month point since it's not even in the first post.

I make fun of the people that use gloves in my area because they're the same group that ruined those jumbo-sized buttons. So whenever I see someone playing with gloves while I'm waiting, I pick up some napkins, wrap them around my palms and mock them.
I also make fun of my friends when I see them using gloves. I punch them in the face as soon as I see gloves on them. I got a friend to play the least 100sec with gloves on. He got a nice crowd and then he failed on purpose and made a fit. You know, for the laughs.
I don't play with gloves. I only use my palms when my fingers start to hurt, but that's a rare occurrence.

It's like putting a towel over the top of the screen in IIDX, or putting a Rock Band guitar on a table, and playing it like a keyboard - you're making the game easier for yourself, at the cost of looking silly?
Too ellaborate - there's nothing wrong with it. You aren't really cheating, or making the actual game any easier, you're just making it easier for you, because you prefer to play it in a way that the designers didn't intend.

Maybe I'm dense, or maybe I'm just not getting the joke, but what good does wearing gloves do for you, anyway? To me, it seems like it would be along the lines of changing shoes for DDR.

Think of it as putting on shoes for DDR instead of switching shoes. I'm sure you wouldn't want to play on an arcade pad with only socks, or even barefooted, since that would likely start to hurt eventually (or very quickly)

But that logic makes it sound like gloves are actually a necessity to avoid injury. Is this a common problem? I mean, I don't use gloves and I have yet to hurt myself playing Pop'n.

Until the game explicitly has a screen saying "WARNING: GLOVES ARE CHEATING!" then you can wear anything you want.

I've never played Pop'n Music, but if I did play it I would probably have to wear gloves, since my hands get sweaty and sticky easily.
