And I decided that maybe I can listen to a show on tv in mandarin and it'll help me with my podcasts lessons!
...Whoever said immersion helps, was wrong >_> I can't hear any words from my lesson unless they're speaking too fast for me to see it.
Someone encourage me

I'll do the opposite of encouraging.
Mandarin is hard. I lived in taiwan for over a year where the main language is mandarin. I have such a small vocabulary and am always discouraged to learn anything. When ever I learn something new I will try to use it and people wont understand me because of the tone which becomes very discouraging.
My only advice is that you need to be serious to learn it. Try hard and make sure you practice with native speaker to make sure you got the tones down.

That will be hard; the best is to have friends who know you're learning and will help you out. Having someone to learn with also helps.
But first, you need to drill the tones. Before you learn anything at all, any words, learn the tones and be able to hear them when someone is speaking at a decent pace. You won't know what they're saying but you must be able to identify the tone. The tone is so critical; if you speak with an accent, fine, people will still understand you, but if you mess the tones you won't be able to convey anything.
... that didn't sound very encouraging but... keep at it! But first, tones.

So tones first, got it. I'm sure there's alot of sites, videos out there to help with it. All I know is third tone, but even at that, it's hard to distinguish it

Yeah, Mandarin is easily one of the hardest languages to learn. You gotta be really serious about learning it.

as far as I remember, those are the 5 tones used in Mandarin, it's rather hard to describe how to pronounce it with words though
