Being clingy to one version of StepMania is definitely a hard habit to kick, and one I can personally relate to.

Before I got my Windows 8 laptop about 5 years ago, I was stuck with an outdated MAC, a super buggy beta version of SM5 that was difficult to work with, and SM4 as my primary source.

Finally being able to use a more up-to-date version of SM5, and kicking SM4 to the curb once I got my laptop helped expand my simfile-making abilities by leaps and bounds.

I'm not even trying to be clingy and only use an old version, but if I want to play around with some old UI, I don't see why it should piss every dev off if I want to boot it up.

Like SM5's great now, but the attitude behind it PUTS ME THE FUCK OFF OF ITTTTTTTT.

It's like if you were trying to get support for iOS 8 when iOS 9 was already out. People are telling you to upgrade because it's a more supported version and it's actively being worked on and improved upon. I don't think I've seen anyone come off as rude in that regard. If you're referring to the attitude behind the SM3.9+ version of the DDR A20 theme (for example) that's different. That's because there's almost no point in creating a lower quality shoddy port of a SM5 theme for an older unsupported, less powerful version. You might as well just download SM5 and the SM5 theme. If your computer can't run it then oh well.

I seriously don't get how you think there's an enormous attitude behind SM5. It's just a newer version. Just upgrade or don't. Use whatever version you'd like. Just know that if you're looking for help on an outdated buggy version, people are going to recommend to upgrade rather than fix a bullet wound with a band-aid.

You can, y'know, make the recommendation without being hostile to 3.9+ users. It's not just threads I've started either. As long as 3.9+ is mentioned anywhere, devs get their panties in a bunch.

Again, I'm using SM5 as my main, but I also have 3.9+ on my PC. It'd be such a waste to have so much amazing interface artwork be unused and lost to time because the devs tell people they're dumb for using an old version.

EDIT: OK. Main example from the one I've dealt with since SM5 was a buggy mess. 'Course other 3.9+ users have other problems met with the same response. Usually they're just simple questions that would require them to just toggle something in the options menu.

I'm having trouble playing Verses mode in 3.9+. Single player and Doubles work fine, but arrows are randomly being missed with two players. It's not overflow, and it works fine in Vanilla 3.9. If anyone has 3.9+, mind playing with a friend so I can troubleshoot this and see if it's a hardware issue?

Every damn time it's "Use SM5, idiot. Fuck you specifically for using 3.9+"

Like damnit I'm not asking anyone to patch dated software. I just need more data so I can troubleshoot stuff myself.

There's no incentive to use 3.9 beyond a wider range of themes and the simplicity of the version itself. SM5 is fundamentally better in every aspect to 3.9 which is why I encourage others to make the switch to a version that does what 3.9 did but better and with more accessibility. nITG is pretty good for mod charts and wanting, very specifically, that ITG arcade feeling.

All of these are fine to use, and there's no inherent problem with using 3.9 plus, but I do personally think SM5 is better and the community of people using 3.9 is steadily shrinking.

Eey, you know that's plenty of incentive for some users. Sometimes that's why people *use* SM, y'know? That's why I did as a kid. I just wanted to play DDR songs I already had on my console. Interface is fun to some people, surprisingly enough. :V

Themes and characters. That's all I wanted to mess around with.

Once SM5 has as big of a library of stable themes that aren't just "mobile-game" or "black with pong letters" then there would be a reason to completely abandon it.

And even then, booting up an old version to play around with old themes shouldn't be chastised to hell and back.

Regardless of the version, StepMania fulfills this incentive you're talking about. Every version can be used to play DDR songs people have on their console. You can use characters on any version of SM including both 3.9 and 5.

I'm going to have to strongly disagree with you on your "lack of stable themes" argument. There are many SM5 themes out there that are stable and are not just "mobile-game" or "black with pong letters", including several that I had a part in working on and one that is in development. I can make a list of a bunch of SM5 themes that are more than just what you described:
-CyberiaStyle 8 and LAST APPROACH
-waiei and waiei 2
-DDR X2 through Ace
-DDR Extreme CS and JP
-DDR SuperNOVA
-DDR SuperNOVA 2 X2 style
-DDR SuperNOVA 3
-DDR Next Generation
-TrotMania III and IV
-SMXG Re:Evolution^3

Not to mention DDR A20 and DDR XX -STARLiGHT- that are both being developed.

This isn't the pioneering period where the SM5 beta recently came out. We're already in 5.1 officially.

And once again, I don't understand what you're talking about the chastisement. I don't think anyone here has called you stupid or anything for using 3.9. What I think happened is that you asked for support and someone just referred you to SM5 because its superior in many ways. Yes, 3.9 is still fun to use every now and then but what it comes down to is that SM5 is much more powerful and improves upon 3.9 in many ways. It's the sad truth but it's what you have to expect when using an older version.

I like how you took the lone negative thing I said about 3.9 and went with that instead of the part where I fucking said 3.9 is fine and there's nothing wrong with using it. You talk as if there's no reason to jump to SM5 despite it being superior to 3.9 in every aspect besides the amount of themes, many of which in 3.9's case are just slight edits of existing themes. SM5 has a lot of stable themes, this isn't 2014, I know that you know there are a lot of functional themes for it. It's up to you which version you choose, but it's really bizarre to suggest that SM5 is somehow not worth transitioning to.

Literally no one here has chastised you for using an older version, you've been on the defensive the whole time not listening to a single thing anyone has said because it isn't praise for 3.9. I'm not about to do so after using a theme that lets players and creators do more than they could before. You genuinely will not get support for an older version of stepmania because so few people are still using it.

Yeah. That's why I'm using it now. Thank god for Inori, Madkat, and the new Starlight team. There's still not a lot of funk though. Point me to something gritty with the vibe of urbanized, MAX2, or DeathJammers Remix. Or some over-the-top y2k like LiteBlue, k\\'s themes, and Techno Fiend?

These also aren't the SM forums or the Reddit. I legit got this attitude like a month ago there.

Also didn't one of the SM5 devs like quit because he was sick of people using 3.9+ instead of 5? Do I need to dig through the web archive to find this? (and to collect every passive aggressive response post to prove this to you guys for some reason?)
