How good does a player have to be at the game for you to consider them skilled at it? I don't mean skilled enough to impress you, but simply skilled enough that you would expect to be able to discuss things like step chart quality, which charts are harder than others, and such, with a common base for the conversation.
Myself, I consider anyone that can't at least A a few 9s like CSFILSM to be unskilled. I don't discuss achievements or new charts with them.

Mmm, well I certainly do fulfill that criteria.
I have two sides, because not everybody does the same thing.
On the one side, if you can Freestyle 8s or higher and get As, I consider you skilled.
On the other side, if you Perfect Attack 9's and get AAs or better, I also consider you skilled.
Realistically, any player who has played constantly for half a year or more (and can play 9 footers and pass) is probably skilled enough to fill your "base" for conversation.

Nope, I know people that have played longer than me (4 years) and they still can't carry their own part in a conversation pertaining to chart quality and the technical stuff.
Anybody that can play doubles is skilled enough for me to talk to. From there, they can carry the conversation with me.

If someone can pass most 9 footers and can properly do most songs without using the bar (that is, cross over when appropriate, turning when appropriate, Afronova walking when appropriate). I'm not against bar raping, but to me, it nullifies your view point of a good quality chart, especially if you're barring easy songs such as Trip Machine luv mix or Feeling of Love, because you're not moving in the intended manner that the chart has you move. People like this usually say songs like Paranoia and Trip Machine are stupid because it forces you to turn. Erm, hello, that's what makes them FUN.

Wow, another "Good" thread. And since doubles is in play, I think I have a bit more leg room.
Being able to play doubles is a little good, but being able to A songs is what I consider "Good". Then there's being able to AA a nice handful of songs and either having beaten or can beat at least 98% of the songs in a DDR mix. The missing 2% or 1% include Fascination MAXX/O, FELM/O, HDVO, and PSMO for SuperNOVA (Max 300 SMMM is easier to pass I say), Pluto Relinquish and PHO plus the previous four for SuperNOVA 2, and whatever X coughs up as the hardest song for X plus the previous six named.
Who dares say those songs are stupid because it forces you to turn?!

I'd say someone qualifies as good if they can pass 8 footers.
If they can pass 10's then they qualify as skilled.
If they can pass ITG 13's they qualify as dieties.

I'm still a noob when it comes to Doubles. The only 9 chart I can pass is AA, and I still fail some 8 footers.
To Trigger, players who suck. What I dislike more than a player who will outright deny the usefulness of crossovers and shifts, is a player who will pretend to take the advice just to get you to shut up, especially when they whine and complain that a song is too hard and that they wish it didn't have certain steps. It's the same case with GFDM/GHRB. Nobody wants to strum both ways because "It feels weird." That's like saying Naoki doesn't know how to turn left. You go "WTF@WK YOU HIGH?"

for me it depends from to player. there are people I consider good and can't even pass a 9 but they do crossovers and move well according to my point of view.
but generally a person being able to clear most nines in DDR is good to me. because with nines comes usually the ability of knowing a chart with all it can offer to the player. (on doubles it's pretty clear, each nine is different and has something else to offer *evil grin* - I won't forget the time when someone told me to try Exotic Ethnic Exp and Afronova Exp o_O).

My idea of good is being able to pass medium-level 8's or, for Doubles, being able to pass several songs that are 7 or higher.

I've passed CSFILSM once, but it was in Training Mode in UM1. I think I got a D.
Also, most DDR stepcharts are good. Take Shades of Grey
for example. It's a fun stepchart, but I understand that it's too easy for some people. I think that a 9-footer could be made from this song.
Although, there's the occasional bad stepchart. I'm looking at you, DEGRS.

Uh seriously though I like to talk to people who can at least do 9s or so. Partly because that's where I'm at (9s and the easy 10s) and partly because, like everyone else said, it seems like that's about when you really start to understand the game.

Get an A on MAX 300 , and I say you understand the fundamentals of the game and can discuss the finer points of the game. If that A is on Single, then you understand the Single game. On Double, you understand the Double game. They're really pretty different. Though, I understand anyone can appreciate a good, fun step chart, regardless of skill level.
Just my completely arbitrary measure.

I only do mid-8's, but to me, anyone who can actually play a round of even standard DDR with a typically hard 
song is good. Maybe not skilled, but they are good. I dunno, maybe my expectations are low because where I live, people have a hard time passing Butterfly

The flashing of the rating was the equivalent of a car with go faster stripes painted on. It doesn't actually mean it's harder, it's just something they stuck on new 10s for a couple mixes.I suck.
Proof: PSH is flashing on EX2 CS, when it's barely harder than Max 300.
Unless n00b_saib0t comes along and presents better proof that I'm wrong, that's what I'm going to believe.

well i played ITG at an arcade at a theater on a field trip and everyone thought I was awesome at DDR when i played Pandemonium on Medium and failed half way. i think i could have lasted longer if i was hydrated and wasn't wearing a winter coat while playing!
