Seems like some "Guest" idiots don't actually know they're causing 503s by mass downloading. I've blocked the individual official simfile downloads for the time being to see if that helps the situation. I'll create packs for the categories that haven't already got packs.

1&1 always worked well for me, but I don't know if they would have what you're looking for, but I never really had any problems.

It's weird because I'll randomly get the 503's. Al, is there a way for you to disallow non-members to download anything, but still being able to view the website and the boards?
So in my brief return, I am going to slowly but surely work on a new simfile mix called TEMPEST. Still workin' on it. Preview -->

That's very easy to do, but I don't see how that will help cos:

a) They'll just sign up and get what they want.
b) If I say post x posts before you can download anything, it would be spam world here.

You could put a message on the front page of the website explaining the situation.

Could do, but rather not bother as I've been meaning to revamp the simfile section for a while.

Here's what I'm hoping to get the site to do:

Background, banner, audio, video, DWI and SM files will be able to be uploaded individually.
ZIP/RAR upload will be disabled to make way for auto-ZIP generation.
Allow user pack generation, how frequently I will decide for later.

Say you upload all or part of a simfile, be it audio, stepfile, banner and background... the server will automatically ZIP the file up for you. Tongue I thought it was clear lol.

My guess is that you submit a simfile and the site will zip it for you. You just submit the folder with the DWI, SM, and song file.Wink

Bump: my post got beat.

BTW, I think the 503s are gone for now.

I recently kept getting 503's for about ten minutes.

Still, that auto-zip idea sounds pretty good.

can you make a set up where a certain ISP can only download so much in one day? make it something reasonable like 1 games worth of songs(so however big all of supernova was, make that the DL limit, or something)? that might help.

Hmm not sure, I'll think of something when they remove it.

Is it me or 503s are really gone when I've disabled the Simfile section? I haven't got one for a few hours.

And is it me that I find pictures on this site load up really slowly? I get 16-20kB/sec max in the picture gallery and I suppose it's the same before with the simfiles too.

Take a look at this:

../forums/slowhttp.png

The HTTP bit is when I tried viewed a picture here, and the FTP bit is when I downloaded a file from here... I'm just wondering why on Earth is the HTTP slow when FTP is flying? ... No wonder people need to use download accelerators for the files...

Also, I sent a ticket to the host describing the problem and they STILL haven't got back to me after more than 24 hours...

Auto-zip generation and individual file uploads sounds sweet as it would save both the uploader and the server time and bandwidth if the author has update fetishes, but problems might arise if there are multiple videos or backgrounds. (for example, the video may be 24fps at one part but 30fps at another, so separate files would be required unless you want a powerpoint presentation or an impossible 120fps video).

Sorry to hear about the 503 errors... I know Bemanistyle often gets "server is too busy" errors likely due to the simfile database there, so I guess it was inevitable.

Yes, I haven't gotten a single 503 since the simfiles were disabled.

Also, I have noticed pictures load slow, while the rest of the site of perfectly fast. I don't spend much time in the gallery, but with the recent uploads, I've been checking them out and they are noticeably slower than, well, everything else.

EDIT: LOL. When I posted this message and was redirected to the thread, I got a 503, then when trying to click Edit, I got another. Oh well.

Urgh, for gods sake, stupid host throttles but don't exactly say how much by, so I have no idea what to cut it down to.

Update: The host has scheduled the throttle removal sometime in the next two days, so hopefully we'll see some improvement there. The ticket for the download speeds remain unanswered though.

Oh FFS, they can't remove it apparently. I'm totally out of options now.

But they did fix the download speeds for one.
