So I just recently got into IIDX after playing DDR. I started off playing with one hand on the buttons and one on the turntable and I can do most 3,4 level songs. Is it true though that to pass 10-12s that you have to use 2 hands on the buttons? Cause thats what I always see in videos. And also, are there any good players who play one handed?

It is indeed possible to pass songs One handed, it's just very, very difficult!
LISU can pass V Another one-handed

It is a good skill to learn playing one-handed, but you'll of course get better quicker if you use both hands Smile

Learning one handed is really good if you want to play double, though.

Did everyone here start playing one handed or two handed?

I started playing one-handed on a 5 key beatmania machine, and then got up to level 3 songs on IIDX. Now I only play with with two hands though. I play around the 8-9 range.

I started IIDX with one handed play here. You can blame 6th style's tatsujin videos that were included with the game which inspired me to do that. Though about DistorteD CS time, I drifted to two handed play now. 1H helps a TON with doubles but since I'm right handed, my left hand spazzes out on retarded stuff like KAKUMEI HYPER14 or ANOTHER14. Annoyed

Cool. Im gonna try to see how good I can get with one hand before I attempt 2 hands. Maybe I can finally do a 5 level song on normal ;)

I started one handed as well, mainly because of my experience in playing piano and it felt more natural for me. As I hit the 6/7 range on 7 key, I started using two hands, but mainly just my left thumb for the 1 key.

After a while though, given my love of doubles for DDR and Dance Maniax and a penchant for masochist game habits, I took up 14 key. I'm at the 8/9/10 mark right now on 14 key. Whenever I do play 7 key now though, I tend to play one handed regardless of the level (and my ability to pass it doing so!). So if you're still playing one handed and have any questions, feel free to ask me.

Also, to other one hand players out there, both 7 and 14 key, do you tend to keep your hand flat with thumb on the 1 key and pinky on the 7 (and vice versa for the other side), or do you cross your thumb under? Also, any advice on scales, specifically all 7 keys 1-7 or 7-1?
Take care and be safe!

shinji16: I'm not really experienced player just yet (9s [a] SP 7s DP). but well I tend to cross my thumb a lot. that's the rule number one for scales I would say (I play Kakumei l14 this way). but if you are playing the piano than I guess you know that I mean with this^_~. I use the same piano technique to play DP in IIDX. For me it is important to be able to shift my hand whenever I need to. I'm faster with moving my whole hand and having different fingering (as my brain chooses and pleases - I do this when playing piano too). but also my technique has not settled yet.

I started playing two handed but I tend to use my left hand less and even more less than before because of doubles play I suppose (at least what concerns 1-5 songs as those I can do one handed - even scratching with the same hand^_~).
