I'm not sure if something like this has already been done before, but at the very least, I wanted to provide a solution that is free and open to everyone if it hasn't already.
Basically, this is a script that can automate the process of converting jackets to background images without having to go through all of the steps manually. The algorithm is based on RGTM's post, but since I'm using GIMP (which is free) rather than Adobe Photoshop (which is non-free), the blur and brightness values don't exactly line up, so the results are slightly different at the moment compared to the original post. Both GUI plug-in and command-line versions are available, so you can generate the BGs with the single click from the GIMP menu or take advantage of batch scripting to process multiple jackets at once.
