I've spent the last few days downloading and playing around with Stepmania Outfox 5.3 and finally figured out a few basic things, like setting up themes and noteskins. I'm currently using the latest version of XX Starlight and trying to figure out how to get characters to work.
After a lot of confused searches, I finally read here that the SNCharacters is distinct from the 3d stepmania characters. I followed the instructions: created SNCharacters folder in 'Appearances' and downloaded 2 character folders to test out. I played a game on beginner level and nothing happened. Do these SN Characters only appear when you pull off certain combos?
Next question: do the 3d stepmania characters work in XX Starlight with the SN Characters? If so, assuming I follow the instructions for that (bones and helper files in Characters folder etc), where do I select these 3d characters in the actual game? I found one 'Characters" section in the options menu but it's not clear whether this refers to SNCharacters or Stepmania 3D characters
I've typed 'characters' so many times...

You want to go to the 3D characters thread. There is a link there to the GitHub page for the characters and stages, plus the patch to make them work in STARLiGHT.

You got the links already so I’m not gonna add them, but I will point out that the front page of the site has a 10 most recent threads section. This site moves pretty slow now a days, so a lot of times you will find threads like that on there. Between announcements for their projects and people asking for help the 3D dancers and stages thread is almost always on there.

Thanks for the links - so I've downloaded the patch and the 3D characters, but still a bit confused about the instructions.
Specifically:
1)
Does this mean I can't use these with Starlight theme on Outfox?
2) The patch has a few common folders to the current theme folders - so I am meant to overwrite the original theme folders?
3) This is under instructions for installation of the 3D characters:
Apologies for the detailed questions, but I've learnt that directory structure is very important and there are differences between stepmania and outfox...
Specifically:
1)

For Project OutFox (SM 5.3), you must use GLAD. To activate GLAD, you must use the default theme (SoundWaves)

3) This is under instructions for installation of the 3D characters:

Unzip the Characters and DanceStages folders into Stepmania's root directory.
But no instructions for Outfox - should I follow the same i.e. copy into outfox root directory?Apologies for the detailed questions, but I've learnt that directory structure is very important and there are differences between stepmania and outfox...

1) Use the default theme to set GLAD as your graphics renderer. It’s under experimental settings. Then change to STARLiGHT.
2) Yes, overwrite the existing files in the theme with the ones in the patch.
3) The Characters and DanceStages folders go in the root directory, yes.

Thanks for the prompt responses, will try that...
So i've tried the patch and the 3D characters install and it seems to have broken my outfox installation - I get a black screen with "Press Start" in both lower corners. When I hit enter it crashes and I get a long error report. The first few sections of the error below. Any ideas how to fix this?

You put STARLiGHT in appearance/themes, then put the patch into the STARLiGHT folder and overwrote the necessary files?

If 5.3 works on Mac that should be all that matters.

delete and reinstall starlight. What you want to do is find the subfolders (within starlight) that match the ones in the patch and add/replace the files that are inside each folder. If you just drop the folder into starlight it will replace the folder that contains more than the files that should be replaced. Hopefully this makes sense.

Ok, I'm making slow but steady progress! I got it all installed and the game with starlight theme and patch works.
But: I tested it with the default Outfox song (After the ending) and it starts with the stage and character but as soon as the dance arrows appear, it goes back to the default song screen (with the train and pixelated mountain in the background).
Do these characters only work with certain songs? If so, is there a way to know which songs are compatible before downloading them?
Thanks again for all you help with this...

If it’s all set up properly it will work with any song.

I'm sure I'm missing some detail of the setup...
Any idea what is missing given this behaviour? The song intro starts, the moving character and stage appear but as soon as the scoring starts, it switches to the default background for the song.

Try a different song/songs and see if it’s the same with all or just that one

Hello, good morning. It's because the Default song has Script (all that train animation, pixelated background, etc). As n00b_saib0t and KurodaOkiayu mentioned earliern, you can play any song, but this is designed to "play" with DanceDanceRevolution songs.
This is because DanceDanceRevolution songs haven't script.
Thank you n00b_saib0t and KurodaOkiayu for all your help.

Thanks Encisso0720. I tried a different songpack and the characters show ok, but now it seems to run super fast with all the arrows appearing at once! The song quickly ends in a crash...
How do I find 'DDR" songs that will work with this setup? Are they marked/titled in a specific way?
So it looks like it's trial-and-error with songs
I've downloaded the DDR II pack and had the same arrow crowding issue, but the Konami Official pack works great!
Is this typical? I guess with so many versions and themes there are going to be lots of incompatibilities.
Is there a way to know which songpacks will play nice with my setup?

This works with ANY song that doesnt have a script in it. Most songs dont. Any song from here shouldnt.
