Beatmania IIDX's first and only game for home consoles in the US released 15 years ago today wow.
I think this game is pretty fun even if it's just a copy of 9th style with some minor changes.

To get started, you'll need to get started. You do that by getting started.

"five minute white boy challenge"
they probably mean outside of Japan/Asia

Approximately nobody asked for this song to be included. Least popular decision by the Japanese since Nintendo released the Wii U.

This game is and still will always be a piece of crap.

Edit: and worse the game's Xplay review which it's okay to bash the game for how shitty it is, but to call the game a Guitar Hero ripoff.

These people who called it a ripoff, haven't played the original US version of Beatmania 5 keys (HipHopMania) at their local arcade, or even go to Japan and check out a Beatmania IIDX cab.

"five minute white boy challenge"
I mean, when it comes to Beatmania mixes, it's a weak one, but it still plays just fine for the most part.

"Gimme a mothaf----n' break!"
It may not be the greatest installment, but the fact that it exists in the first place is nice. I definitely enjoyed having and playing this back in the day. I did always find it a bit strange, though, how some of the “beatmania exclusives” weren’t also used in the IIDX side.

I actually got this game when it first came out; even if the game wasn't exactly as amazing as its Japanese counterparts, at least the controller made improvements over the original version (i.e. keys no longer stick... at least, as much. ), and I eventually used it to play
Be-Pachi Music (and later, LR2 ) with (albeit I needed to buy a USB to PS2 converter, which there was a lot of, back in 2006.).

Aside from that, it's probably better to think of this game as planting the seeds of people wanting to play IIDX for those who were nowhere near the few and far between arcades that happened to have a cabinet (like myself), until Round1 started setting up shop in Industry, and later franchising nationwide. And it was starting point for Konami to try and release a proper version in arcades (It took them 3 tries, but we eventually got one. )

"you are the DJ, hit the key"
this was my first interaction with beatmania/IIDX when i was like...7 or 8 years old. little did i know, that interaction would make me enjoy playing all types of rhythm games for years to come, become a 7dan on BMS/GENOSIDE/GENOSIDE2018 and become a 7dan on some of the IIDX CS games.

DDR may have been my first rhythm game & first BEMANI game, but beatmania was what really got me into the genre. and i'll always have this game to thank for that.
please play 5key beatmania i'm begging you

Missed the anniversary but beatmania USA is a good starting point for new players and plus it has some good 5-key stuff to boot.

plus I got the game with an UKOC in good condition for US$70 so I'm not complaining

Not really. If that's how you're gonna play you're better off going for one of the Japanese versions. You can get stuff like 10th Style on ebay for like $20, dirt cheap compared to when I got some of them 10-15 years ago. It was great for the time because you could just go to Walmart, Target, Best Buy, Game Stop, etc. and grab it without having to pay out the ass to ship the controller, and you had something to play until you could order a "real" IIDX game, but now the game is practically worthless.
