Hello there. Just wanted to ask if there is any benefit to converting MP3 files to OGG?
I've heard that converting between different compressed file formats can make the sound quality worse.
But I want to make space on my computer and make the files be more compatible for StepMania.
Is it worth doing? Is there any efficient way to convert music files?

ogg is better for simfiling, so timing will be more spot on and consistent due to the bitrate (I think that's how it works but don't quote me on that) also idk any good converters besides the first result on Google search

Well currently I'm using ArrowVortex to convert my music to ogg but I'm not really sure
if that's the best option to use.
Previously I was using Audacity to convert my files but I'm not familiar with picking
the appropriate quality settings when exporting converted files.

An ogg isn't going to be that much smaller then an mp3, and both are lossy compression methods (unimportant information is not saved) so each time a source is compressed it will get worse.
I don't think it is worth it to recompress it to another format from mp3 unless you have another reason then space.

And in my case, I convert OGG to 128kbps MP3 at 44 kHz due to space issues. The OGG file is better due to legal issues.

To convert my mp3 files to ogg, I use audio-online-convert, it's a free and online website that has advanced settings for the conversion.

Use Audacity.
ArrowVortex is also fine, so just take your pick of either of 'em.

If you're wondering what quality to choose for exporting OGG in Audacity, I'd really say 7 or 8.

please for the love of god do not convert plain mp3 to ogg unless you want some shitty transcoding
if you want find a wav or flac of the original song, convert it from there
also wow this thread is kinda old >
