I'm not entirely sure that works out. Last year (TOI 5), only 28 people entered and the top 4 seeds didn't have to submit anything for ROUND 1 (they didn't have any opponent to face, this gained an automatic admission to ROUND 2). But at this point, we have EXTRA submissions (I.e. more than an even 32). Unless you want to hold 6 ROUNDs with virtually everyone getting byes (only the 4 lowest seeds wouldn't get one).
I think there's going to have to be eliminations going into ROUND 1, unless you find some other tournament format in which more than two participants matchup with each other.

Why can't we spread the byes out through different rounds?

Fixed. If it doesn't work for others. I switched it to the English name BTW.

Why can't we start eliminating already to encourage people vote?

I need to back up mf32892, DJXYZ, and Aegis.
Let's say there's 36 files. "Okay, that's not a problem, it's still an even number!". Then it goes to 18. But then it goes to 9.
Wait... what? Who is that leftover going to face?
Maybe the 9th is a bye, but then 4 + 1 = 5, and then 2 + 1 = 3, and there's no way to permanently iron that bulge unless you have a bracket with THREE people (which would be weird, but I guess possible).
There's a similar problem if we end up getting 35 files. 35 - 1 bye is 34, but then 17 - 1 = 16, then 8 + 1 = 9 then the problem I referred to above. And there are so many similar problems.
I propose since we've indeed gotten more than 32 files that we just slice off everything from 33th place and below.

Let's get into depth with this once the final number of qualifiers is known.

^ This. It is a qualifier round, after all. If you don't make the upper 32 then you simply don't qualify for Round 1. That's exactly what was done in ToI 4, I don't see any reason to change it.Post #167 · Posted at 2016-04-11 01:51:54am 9.1 years ago

Well, some playoff format modifications do allow for this, and they wouldn't disrupt the flow of the tournament, but it's up to Pandy.

I prefer elimination for the 33rd and below, but...
Maybe if you want to keep the "no elimination in the qualifiers" rule, you can combine the brackets and make three people fight in some brackets. Most points out of the three wins.
If there are 36 files, this is how it might play out:
1 vs 32 vs 33
2 vs 31 vs 34
3 vs 30 vs 35
4 vs 29 vs 36
The rest are the same (5 vs 28, 6 vs 27 etc).

That actually would be very unfair for those top places, because they would have to fight vs two simfiles instead of one.

A slow start-and-stop song that might've been a bit too risky as a Qualifier, but here we go anyway. Lots of stops in the beginning, which turn into 20 BPM (the slowest I've ever stepped - slower than the slowest consistent BPM DDR song!) slowdowns later in the song. Song speeds up to 80 for the chorus, with a few crossovers in the mix. Second verse closely follows the draggy vocals, so watch out. Probably a file I don't intend on creating ever again, but I did enjoy working on it.
File is Classic DDR scale. Graphics by me, except for the jacket which was made by Paul Sahre.
Ever since I made the background, my life has never known peace.

Huh. I thought earlier that they would have no problems fighting two lower-placed ones and the winner will have more pride in beating two people, but it does seem unfair. Sorry. Looks like eliminating 33rd and below is the fairest, yeah.
(Previously I was tinkering with an idea that lower-placers will fight in a big group for Round 1 alongside the other participants.
Like, 1 vs 28, 2 vs 27 etc, which produces 14 people (with new seeds 1-14), and then places 29-36 fight in a group and the two people with the highest points get to be seeds 15 and 16 for Round 2. Then it proceeds as normal.
But I figured it's too complicated, and it kinda takes away from being in the lower places not in that huge group, not to mention it's impossible to record in Challonge in one piece and it feels more like a reality show than a tournament)

If that's the method to be used...... I have a strange feeling I might not qualify with my effort...! Either way, Pandy will be the one to have the final say. (Personally I hope he'll use the 'bye' system, meaning that the top will directly qualify to another round)

I don't see why it's unfair for those top places - the bottom places would also have to fight two simfiles.

It's more people to take down, which is less fair no matter what way you slice it.
If time allowed, I'd make the top, say, 10 positions qualify automatically, and the next round is the fight for the remaining slots. Something rubs me up the wrong way about being eliminated in a round that you were told nobody would be eliminated in, moving the goalposts like that is just going to make things salty.

Phew! I barely made it. (this post is after the deadline but the actual simfile is uploaded before)
So yeah, a Splatoon fan music. It's pretty catchy, and I found that the blue version is a bit more... steppable than the red version.
SSC contains split timing. SM is stripped from all these and just follows the timing of the Difficult chart.
Please enjoy!
