Seriously if anyone thinks total number of steps is all there is in deciding the difficulty

Or the most drastic I can find, ロンドンは夜８時 (LON 8PM - TYO 4AM) has 498 steps, tokyoEVOLVED (TYPE3) has 492 steps. Are you guys implying that tokyoEVOLVED (TYPE3) should be a 12 or ロンドンは夜８時 (LON 8PM - TYO 4AM) should be a 16?

Players shouldn't think of the number as being an absolute definition of how hard the song is, because it's not, and it isn't meant to be.

The difficulty system breaks the songs down into 19 "groups". You should start at the first group, and play different songs in that group until you've got the hang of them, and feel you can step upto group 2, in which the songs are slightly harder. Don't try to jump from Group 1 straight into Group 3, because they're considerably more difficult, and you'll need to have understood and mastered some of the new gimmicks and patterns found in the songs in Group 2, in order to stand a chance.

The whole reason they switched from a scale of 9 to a scale of 18 was to create a more intuitive learning curve, and give players a clear path to help them move from lvl 1 to lvl 19 without running into any brick walls along the way. Literally the only thing indicated by the ratings of the two songs in question is that Konami feel players should try to clear Elemental Energy before attempting Valkyrie Dimsneion. Why they reached that conclusion doesn't matter, because the difficulty system is just a guide to help new players tackle songs in a logical order, rather than some great cosmic significance that needs to be debated.

It's very clear that the difficulty of a song is not determined by the amount of steps, there are so many examples of songs with few steps and high rating and songs with many steps and low rating.

Clear status. Just clearing gives you blue tab I think, FCing gives you a ring in it, on top of more color-coded tab, with blue + ring = Good FC, green + ring = Great FC, yellow + ring = Perfect FC. I don't know about MFC, but I suppose they give white + ring tabs.

The idea Tyma postulates that one cannot jump from group 1 to group 3 (of the 19 "groupings" which I will call footer ratings until I die) is simply backwards thinking. In fact, there are several instances in the old rating where songs of the same footer rating were not equitable at all. (See every extreme 10 for my point).

With the modern rating system, the extension still massively breaks down at certain footer ratings because no two songs will ever be equally easy for anyone.

I have notAAd most 13 footers, but I have AAd Shiny World. I can get a moderate B on Max 300, but I can get an A on Possession (weird, right?)

I can solidly pass PSMO on doubles with a C (at least) but even passing The Legend of Max is very difficult for me on doubles.

The footer ratings indicate (as objectively as possible, and they are *STILL* opinion*) how difficult a song is. That being said, they are still not a definition of each song is equally difficult. Even using the groove radar is not an adequate account of difficult for similar themes. I could do, my very first game, Standard Butterfly with almost no issues. The song felt natural and easy. And I could do many heavy songs before Xenon on standard. The groupings are a general indicator, but it's not a gospel ruling. It's just a guideline, nothing more.

Missed this:

I'm a bit confused on what exactly the chart wants you to do at points. I might be mistaken, but it looks like double steps are forced throughout.

Ignoring the pre-200 combo double steps which are very easy, the ones after 1;30 are a bit annoying. There only seems to be like 3 in the song. Far less than I thought.


Anyway, it's still a good example of a good doubles chart versus Another Phase, whose double chart is (IMO) stupid.

I edited above cause it wasn't as bad as I thought after doing a quick "play along" with it to see. It looks really fun, and after playing along, a great step chart. A few easy double steps, and a section or two that might be a double step. (Still did it quickly!)

Anyway, I'm going to rest a bit. Hopefully you can get up the heavy chart soon so we have more to look at/talk about.

ALSO, has anything harder than a 16 been unveiled? (Sorry if it's old news!)
