Edit: Ok due to my tight schedule this weekend as ill be leaving tomorrow to go out of town and will be back monday. Unless I can cram a file on monday ill have to sit out this first round. All I have to say is good luck to you all.

^ This is the original version of 3.9 released way back in the day. It saves all data in it's own folders, no need to make portable. If you're having issues with stepcharts disappearing on Vista or Windows 7 using this will likely solve that problem.

Also, check the Documents and/or AppData folder (type %AppData% in the address bar) if you wish to retrieve charts that weren't saved to the Stepmania folder.

Actually, C:/ might be fine. However, C:/Program Files (the default install directory) is a very bad idea to install any game to.

C:\ should be fine even if you aren't an administrator. For ease of access I have a desktop folder with lots of subfolders containing multiple builds and versions of StepMania for simming, theming, compatability testing, etc.
