My first impressions of the box art are that Konami's focusing on some sort of exergaming image.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure they're going crazy with the whole "DDR Get's you FIT!" Mentality after the First Lady is pushing it and everything. I mean look at the alternative box art for the Hottest Party 3 bundle, it has women in work out attire. First problem with that is that is says "DDR IS FOR FAT CHICKS!" No, really! The "exergaming" cover is saying, "If you play this you will be come a thin, fit, middle-aged woman." That just isn't cool at all. It would've been nice if there were guys on it so it doesn't seem like it's aimed towards women. If you look at the design it's pretty feminine. Yes, it may look neutral in design but it feels as it's marketed towards women now :/

Scratch that, reverse it.
So putting a guy on the box art would make it all better then? Tongue
They need to go back to silhouette characters.

And what's even weirder is the fact that not many women play DDR. I am the only female in my town that even plays. The only other female people that are good of DDR/ITG besides me that I know of are ddrpros and glow on Youtube. IDK, just what I thought.

I agree with you there. They should put the dancing characters on the covers. At least Lady or Disco.

Many girls buy the game, but don't come into a forum and shout how they can pass Jerk it Out in Beginner.

tl;dr- females purchase ddr, but leave it to dust or just remain home players in Beginner

Is that all it takes to make the game rated 10+? Damn.

Makes having the s-word in the lyrics of All The Things She Said in the 3+ PEGI rated Dancing Stage SuperNOVA and also clearly sung in the 12+ PEGI rated SingStar Hottest Hits quite amusing really.

Skip to 7:46 if you don't believe me.

I more or less agree. As much as I love a lot of what Konami does and the effort that they put in, their games and marketing can often be rather poor. It's like they have great ideas and concepts and tend to fudge them when they actually make the game.

Being a European, I've seen some fairly poor and dire box arts in my time and I find it hard to believe that Konami has decided to make the art of the new Wii game more like its European counterparts rather than sticking with the better American "people surrounded by musical energy" type, which maybe not be perfect perhaps, looked a damn sight better.

Sometimes I wish that I and maybe a fair few others worked for Konami so that we could tell them what silly decisions they make sometimes and how they can improve. A lot of the time it's little things like forced bundles over bundle and solus versions of games, giving people a choice depending on which they need.

Buying into the whole "Wii Fit" motion games thing actually makes the game stand out LESS in my opinion. At least before it got recognition like a brand name with Dancing Stage, so everyone recognised it but now we've lost both the name AND it's classic look so it's even less unique and recognisable.

Also DanceDanceRevolution is TERRIBLE English. It should be Dance Dance Revolution regardless of how it translates from Japanese.

They should have just made the game multi-platform (sort of like how they are doing now), given it a new name like Dance Dance Revolution: Evolution or something and worked on giving us a combined online music store with access to old KO's, crossovers and begin licensing and producing new songs.

Or maybe I'm the only person who thinks that it'd be cool for Konami to make DDR on all consoles more or less like what Guitar Hero offers now?

It's not that it's bad that there are women on it (as it's been for the past what 10 years now?) but that with that release it seemed like "hey are you a woman then this game is for you." It's not that I'm saying there should be guys (one guy in DDR Wii 2010) on the cover but that don't make it look like it's aimed towards only women. At first Hottest Party had that cutesy, 60s theme going on that worked no matter what you are. Hottest Party 3 was this weird combination of Hip-hop, dance, and exergaming. The menu style goes with the theme of the game, the purple box art makes it look like the game has a dance/club theme, and the blue box art makes it look like it's going to be really simple and used for a gym. I don't care it's still DDR but I don't want Konami to make me grow a vagina... That would be too awkward. :V

It's funny, out of all the people that I know locally that have owned DDR in the past don't play the AC mixes because they only play on Beginner and say they "suck." I actually know a few people that played a long time ago with EXTREME and the DDRMAXs but have long since stopped playing and sold their games (sad indeed.) I believe one even had KONAMIX. Oops

They got "shit" into the E-rated DDR SuperNOVA 2, and "fuck" in the E-rated Pop'n Music, so at this point, I honestly don't think music comes into the equation, unless the lyrics are written out on-screen, or the lyrics are sexual.

What song was that in DDR SuperNOVA 2? I don't think they really take it into account unless it is clearly heard. Like in the process of rating games they have non players play the game or listen to it and if they hear stuff they write it out and if they don't then oh well. Right?

Well I haven't listened to the entire SN2 OST and I haven't played the game... At all. I was surprised that it was there thinking it was a KO or something. Thing is I've noticed the UK/PAL whatever versions get things thrown in there that the NA versions wouldn't have slip in. You guys get things past the radar a lot I suppose.

I'm pretty sure there's a different between talking about something being "fucking" good, and talking about people "fucking" each other?

Likewise, Faint doesn't say something is "shit" in a derogatory or obscene way, it just uses it as a throwaway noun.

I think the context of the word actually matters, which is why DDR gets away with a lot.

Yeah context is what usually makes or breaks it, that and the number of times it's used. It's obvious a cluster f-bomb isn't going to make it into a E-10 rated game but a heavily distorted, processed word that sounds like 20 other English words could obviously make it even in the States. I was gonna say that Bemani really does get away with using swear words in Japan as long as it's in English (sarcasm)

Japan doesn't seem to care, because for the most part, nobody has any idea what's being said.

Look at Icarus, that took... 3 years, before anyone found out what the "lyrics" were, and then it turned out that the very first line was probably something which could have upped the rating.

That UI doesn't look at all familiar. Also, perhaps the rating for that game has something to do with Sean Kingston singing about being suicidal?

Yeah, it's funny, because when the american CS game was announced, Mark Summers was worried that Konami of America hadn't contacted him to provide a "clean" version of the song, and that they'd instead censor it themselves, in some stupid way, like putting an audible bleep over the lyric.

Turns out he had nothing to worry about ^^;

The word 'shit' appearing in 12s isn't so bad. I think even PG movies can get away with saying the word shit once or twice, and the game XIII was rated 12+ and used a couple of 'fucks'.

The rating system appears to be different here. They don't really mind about light words like 'hell' or 'damn', and any themes in lyrics that don't have swearing in are just glossed over. That's why HP3 was rated 3+ here even though it had Detroit Rock City.

With singers mumbling their words nowadays, I believe 12+ is just about accurate.

Wasn't the "I'm in serious shit" line censored in Dancing Stage SuperNOVA? They used the 'clean' version, where she just goes "I'm in serious shhhhht" which isn't much better but it's not as obvious. Tongue

Or was she just awful at pronouncing it...?

It's edited out in the song, but it's there if you have lyrics turned on.
