has nothing to do with difficulty.
It feels like a 17, given that despite the speed and note density, the patterns are simple and aren't hard to follow.

Well, due to memory constraints, songs would have to be removed at some point.

No. Apparently, the game's hard drive is nowhere near full.

The game is about 14gb out of 80gb. There's no way it can be due to memory constraint Tongue

At that point KONAMI can always issue upgrade kits containing larger size harddisks lol

I think RAM would be a bigger issue than taking up harddrive space

Let's look at it in this perspective. If they're using 17GB currently of the hard drive space, then they can quadruple the song count (pushing the song count to over 2000 iirc). I seriously doubt DDR will be around long enough to see the 2000th song.

I thought the whole idea of DDR was that it IS going to stick around for an unforeseeable amount of time.

An arcade mix that brings itself up to ~800 songs and then starts cycling through inactive content, the whole time steadily introducing new tracks and bringing back old licensed favorites, is plenty. That probably wouldn't ever be in danger of filling the entire drive. And am I the only one that things 14GB for a slim Windows XP installation and the content we have now is an extreme waste of space to begin with?

How many songs, including unlocks, does this mix have anyways? It should be the highest (or one of the highest) song counts for any version of DDR to date.

Well I don't think harddrive space should be a problem I looked at my SM song folder and it only takes up only a little over 4 gigs and theres 935 songs and I don't think I'm missing anything. I agree that if any songs are to be removed its most likly due to licensed songs being expired.

Most of these games use wav or some other uncompressed audio format, and some horrible video format too that cares not for filesize concerns, while in your SM setup you have to use ogg or mp3, two very well compressed audio file formats, so that's where all the space went.

Did you know it's illegal to use mp3 in your video game without a license?

Unless something has changed for the worse since DDR X, the graphics are PNG and the movie files are MPEG, just like most StepMania setups. The only thing not heavily compressed is the audio, Konami's own blend of PCM WAVE. But even then you're not going get very large file sizes for only ~2 minutes of audio.

A normal installation of Windows XP is ~2GB, Embedded should be much less than that.

Even with all the songs and dancing characters and whatever else, 14GB is hard to believe. Probably what happened is that they cloned a fragmented drive and/or did partitioning that caused an unnecessary loss of storage space.

And yeah, MP3 requires a license. Which is why games like In The Groove use OGG Vorbis. It's not cost prohibitive to compress audio.

I'm sure they set the drive up in whatever way is most convenient for them, since I don't think the process has changed much since 2008. Though knowing Konmai as we do, it's far more likely that songs will be rotated out because they want to, not because there's a space issue.

AFAIK, DDR audio since X1 uses 4-bit ADPCM wav archived in xwb format (that explains the compression), about nearly the size as in 320 kbps quality mp3 per song.

Most of the filesize comes from the movies, which are in .m2v format. The "latest" (see also: final) update of x3 has 7.33 GB of movies and 3.03 GB of music. So 14GB does not sound unreasonable at all for 2013.

The amount of space taken up by videos in X3 is probably higher because of 2ndMIX mode, right? Every single song from 2ndMIX has a unique, full-length video emulating the background animations of yore. Even if the songs carried over retained their videos, a good chunk of them would be gone now. Either way, yikes, that's a lot of space just for MPEG2 videos.

(.m2v is just a container for MPEG2 videos without an audio track)

some of the 2ndMIX videos are surprisingly light because some parts of it are just stills. The usual videos hover around 50MBs each though.

If thewheel is right, 1.92GB of videos spread across 2ndMIX Mode (31 songs, including the two new bosses), then that's roughly 62MB per video. Seems a waste.

I did read your post before. But I was talking about how the DDR game installation could amount to 14GB of used space, not the likelihood of DDR (or any other Bemani series) adopting jubeat's song rotation schedule... that comment was just my guess as to what happens when the hard drive on DDR gets full; I don't think it ever will.

I wonder what the ultimate boss song of BEMANI Gakuen will be, perhaps some secret collaboration between dj TAKA and DJ YOSHITAKA-- oh wait, nevermind.
