Wouldn't be a bad idea, but as you know, DDR wants to reach out to audiences yet to experience DDR, and thus they use licenses to try and get them started on 4-panel gameplay and hopefully try any of the in-house tracks that fancy them.
The cuts or the steps are another story.

I blame a certain "high-profile game" that hit the AC scene a few years ago.
Wasn't it pretty much just last year?Post #1604 · Posté à 2010-03-25 10:01:08pm il y a 15.8 années

How is that possible, it isn't like Konami takes these songs without permission to use in their games, what's the whole point of licensing music then:S.
It's to do with public performance royalties. Usually, when a song is used in a videogame, the artist and composer or record label are paid a one-off fee (which is what DDR does).
DDR and GH fall into a weird catagory, because they function like a Jukebox, where the player selects the song that they want to hear. In order to use a Jukebox in any venue, the owner needs a Performing Rights License, which most DDR operators don't have.
Isn't getting a license to operate a jukebox... cheaper? Isn't that what Colin did with his DDR:DX machine? And if they did it that way (to the best of my understanding) it would work like a radio license and Konami could use whatever music it wanted to under the blanket license.

KONAMIX is still one of the best DDR games ever just because of that. And there already a handful of KOs in the "covers of licensed songs" category. What's to stop them from just doing that instead?

They have to pay to use covers. Just because NAOKI covered COME CLEAN doesn't let them use it wherever they want; they still pay royalties for that.

So does this ASCAP grope get so much money for every music AC game?
BTW, is it just DDR X and GH AC that are getting removed off ACs?

Shouldn't they have done something about back in 1998 back when DDR first came out, if it's apparently such a huge problem?

That's why I ask if ASCAP get's a profit for every AC music game. My theory is this, in 2008 GH AC came out and did well, so ASCAP gets X number of profit. So I bet they expected the same amount for 2009 with DDR X. well... as we all know, DDR X SUCKED. So maybe the ASCAP is doing this as a threat to stop making games that have lag problems and don't work. But I agree, how come NOW it's a issue?

I wonder why this is a huge issue, I mean LIPS and Singstar has songs and those games has full ver of the songs... this explains why dlc packs were removed from ddr uni1 and uni3

Tony, SingStar and Lips are not arcade machines...this ONLY applies to games that have arcade versions of itself that are put out into the public.Post #1611 · Posté à 2010-03-26 06:54:10am il y a 15.8 années

this shouldn't be an issue because if people listen to their music, then people will start buying their album

Ok. This is how the ASCAP thing works.
Locations that have Jukeboxes pay a licensing fee every month to the ASCAP for public performance of the music. ASCAP does nothing but sit back and take the money. So in the end of it all, that Jukebox is an ongoing expense (Paying for the actual machine and then the monthly fee to ASCAP). With music games, the companies legally (in most cases), license the music, from the publisher of the said music, for public performance. This way they can avoid the monthly fees by licensing it outright.

ergo ASCAP is pissed that they are not making any money off of this. Lovely.

I believe ASCAP actually uses part of the money as royalties, so it isn't as if the artists wouldn't be getting the money,

Which artists? Do they demand a list of what gets played (as is the case with UK radio broadcasts)? No, they don't.
So really it means the artists who are members of the group get money, and good ole John Desire wouldn't get a penny
In the UK we have several of these vultures hovering around (actually, at least 16 actross various overlapping media) - the PRS and PPL for music, one for video content, all demanding you buy licenses from them. Oh, and there's the fact that we must have a license to receive television broadcasts of any type, too (that one is mandatory, and punishable by a fine).
It also doesn't cover all music, only that covered by it's members and various reciprocal agreements with other bodies.
I respect copyright and the need to pay royalties/licenses, but I have zero respect for these collective organisations, and expecially their business practices.
