Warnings And Bans

So looking back, it seems like a lot of the discourse on this user is on mental health, which is fine (I don't think people should be banned for their mental health issues either). That said:


I do think there's a legitimate and persistent rule being broken here, if that's an easier pill to swallow than "we're banning this user because they're weird." Which I get, that's honestly a fucked up argument and I can see why a mod wouldn't pursue that line of reasoning.

This place goes like two days without a single post sometimes. One day without one isn’t unheard of, and it’s fairly frequent to go 12+ hours without one. Please, tell me what discussions are being disrupted. This thread is seeing more posts than actual rhythm game related threads are.

even if we did ban them... they'll just keep making accounts again and again. it's what they've done. it's what they'll still do. i think oni temporarily had to ban all ips from their state or something and they still kept popping back up.

what would you like us to do?

Not sure there's anything that can be done short of tracking them down, grabbing their device and throwing it into the sea. Which I'm not sure is legal, but America's got weirder rules.

Mods may get trigger happy with the strikes, but I think it's a lot more lenient that what I've experienced in other forums. Other forums serve infractions for having a post with less than 5 words, for instance. Of course, leaving a post that just say something like "Cool", "Thanks" and the like are not exactly profound enough.

With that said, for someone suffering from issues, whatever they may be, the best course of action would be to read the post over, and then read it over again before posting what it is you've typed. Maybe what you are about to post ain't exactly adding much to the current discussion (even for threads that go off-topic at times).

Finally, I have faith in how the mods have fulfilled their roles, so I leave the job of moderating and how to advice and de-escalate any issues up to them. I mean, Al managed to police the forums all by himself during the sites heyday.

My thoughts on the user, give her a stern word via PM to think thrice about what she's about to post, so things like this don't become an ongoing issue.

I think the issue is that this has been happening for such a long time and they've made dozens of alternate accounts to evade bans. Also i'm fairly sure there are other users who are trying to keep them in check but it's clearly not working but as everyone else has said, what can you do short of just play ban whack a mole with them at this point?

I just want to say that one of the moderators here, NewbStepper, is talking to me about what issues I might be dealing with and why I might be doing these sorts of things, and she has offered me some good advice. I will do my best to follow that advice, work on the underlying issues I'm dealing with, and not take out my negative emotions on the people here.

Because they just admitted that they got away with making ten dupe accounts after multiple IP bans and still have an account on this website, which is a massive issue.

Edit: Like, imo the occasional spam/bump is annoying, but if you don't want to ban someone for that, that's whatever. Having this many dupe accounts is my issue, especially on a website with frequent simfile contests, score tracking capabilities, and the ability to upload your own simfiles. We already had an issue involving a dupe account in SC2021 -- it's not as though shenanigans won't happen.

All I can really say is that people have certainly and justifiably been permabanned for less irritating stuff.

Is a bit weird that all it takes to get unbanned is "make enough alt accounts to the point where the mods get bored of banning them". And it's not like this is an overreaction over one or two mistakes, necrobumping old threads or replying to active ones by going "cool" or smashing their face against the keyboard is something they've explicitly been told not to do... I don't know, twenty times by now?

I don't think I was unbanned just because I kept making accounts; in fact, I was IP range-blocked once. The reason I was allowed to keep this account is because I joined Discord and started talking with NewbStepper there, and she's been helping me identify and manage my issues in a more positive way. And because of those conversations, it was decided that I could have one more chance here.

It was xRGTMx that ultimately decided against you being banned yet again after confirming your IP, so remember to thank him for that. This was after I pointed out that just banning you from every Discord server you're in is only going to cause more problems for more people because you'd just annoy another group or forum in a never-ending cycle and continue to fail to see why everyone is kicking you out. Now, had you been malicious and threatened users anywhere, your fate may have been very different.

I feel like it's all blown out of proportion. Getting upset at someone for making irreverent posts is fault at the one getting mad. Getting upset at someone falling back on the progress they're making to get better, however, is understandable. I have it in good faith that Valkyrie means well. I want to see them succeed. So when I see them making the weird keysmash posts, I feel disappointed. But that doesn't mean progress is magically lost.
This is leaving details and stuff out so it makes it seem like their only issue is "making bad posts" but there's more to it than that lawl
