Depends on your final stage score:
990,000+ - 4 lives
975,000+ - 3 lives
960,000+ - 2 lives
950,000+ - 1 life
I don't know the exact scores, though.

Why did they change the Extra Stage rules? What was so bad with the no recover bar?

Before on previous DDRs, you had to always play a RED song, where a no recover bar would be more suited.
Say you wanted to get ENCORE EXTRA STAGE on SuperNOVA2. You only need to play a song selected using RANDOM to get it which is very easy if you had the no recover bar. So I guess they just decided to make EES harder to get.

Well, I see Pandy's point. I guess if you pick RANDOM, there may be a chance that an easy song will pop up. (e.g. Remember You)

well I like the bar system. Makes more of a challenge.

yea, same here, although i like Unreal (the song that is the Final Stage at my arcade), i don't ALWAYS want to play it just so that i can get to the ES...which i can't as for the final stage to get extra stage, I really don't like it. I would like to play a song a would like to play
