I would convert the MP3 to an uncompressed waveform then to OGG to preserve the quality the audio is currently at (whatever that may be).
Uh.. no. That's still a transcode. What you'd be doing is _not_ preserving the quality the audio is currently at, because you're still converting an mp3 to vorbis.
I know that there's still a slight loss in the process, but to get OGGs that's the best that can be done with what we've got.
Actually mp3->wav->ogg is the exact same quality as mp3->ogg.
On to a different topic...
Everyone working on these simfiles has their game synched to this file, right? Because I still don't agree with several of the sync jobs lately...

I disagree that it's the same thing, there might be programs out there that automatically expand to a waveform then back to compression in the background but normally if you convert lossy to lossy you take a good quality hit. The middle step preserves almost all of the quality that was there to begin with. However the lower the starting quality the less any of that matters.
When I dare hard enough to sync myself I use StepMania 3.9 final with a global offset tuned to DDRUK's BUTTERFLY and foonmix's nullpop.

I'm 101% sure that my stepmania works fine... Maybe is your PC...

With the new mp3 offset smoooooch needs the video to start at -2.000.
If mp3->ogg isn't giving you the same thing as mp3->wav->ogg, you need to replace your programs. I recommend getting foobar2000, the LAME package from Rarewares, and a Vorbis package from Rarewares.
Also, I assure you that "sync" simfile is accurate. I don't know 100% for certain where it came from, probably ITG/SM4/or something around that time. Some of these X2 sims needed +/- 0.08 seconds on my end, that's a little much if everyone in this thread really has a synced machine.

Audacity, I'm good.

The sync file you uploaded is from the PC version of In The Groove and is probably NOT what you want to sync official files to. It was tuned to an old StepMania 3 alpha build that was heavily customised.
Not to mention ITG has a custom global offset to compensate for the lack of proper syncing in ITG.

It may be from ITG PC / SM3 alpha, but it hasn't failed my ancient DDRUK sims and it's matched 5 desktops of different specs and 6 laptops of different specs for me over the past 4 years in both XP and Vista/7. (This is part of the reason why I don't understand why people get gaps that are off by +0.08 on my end. - I've never had to adjust my global offset unless using a PS2->USB adapter on an HDTV)
I'm providing it as a helper to avoid having to hit F12 three to five times in edit mode when I download files from this thread... =\

Using SM 3.9 + Redux, my SM is 120% on sync... Again...

Direct link up... without movies. Google's being finicky, sorry. If you want the movies you can either use the magnet or get them from the simfile category here on ZIV, since that's where I got them from.

I'm pretty sure the new 30mb 640x80 smooooch video is stretched. The old 11mb 720x480 didn't look stretched.

"TAKING IT TO THE PIE" |
My system seems synced to the given sim and a lot of these X2 sims seem a bit late.

Just tested the "sync" simfile.
TEST RESULTS:
Part 1: listening through assist tick: Too early
Part 2: playing using either keyboard or my PS2 control pad: Too early
Part 3: same as part 2 but with DARK modifier on and listening through the musics' beat (served as assist tick): Too early
Global offset seconds were set to default (0.000) in this test.
I am using SM3.9+ Redux too.
In my part, I only press the sync button (F11/F12) to adjust to match to assist tick, then on the final part, i do autosyncing and play with my PS2 control pad (usually in BASIC or DIFFICULT, if none of them present, a custom EDIT chart with step chart full of alternate left and right arrow in 4th beat measure distance), play with DARK modifier ON and listening to music beat. I don't care how the final assist tick result but in the end, the final assist tick result is the same as what i hear in CS DDR SN2 and above game in training mode.
actually i got a modified DDR assist tick (ogg) from SM default theme sound which i observed that there was a slightly big gap of silence at the beginning. I remove it to the first frame before the very first wave in the assist tick file using sound editor... and adjusted also the delay seconds in metric theme. I believe that syncing issues is theme-wise. There are times that even though you match the sync to assist tick, but when you played it on pad or any input device, it is off sync then (except when there is an obvious delay especially in HDTV or HDMI monitor, of course you should adjust the global offset seconds in stepmania.ini).
EDIT:
Pierce The Sky updated (added few new stepcharts from zaibot).

Well, the point of the "sync" simfile is to force you to change your global offset from 0 to something else...
