FLOOR 4 - Running Low

HINOTORI / Takanashi Kiara
SP:

DP:

CLEAR! Main Requirement: DDP notecount 553, EDP notecount 552
CLEAR! Bonus Requirement: DDP lv. 12, 3 levels under EDP, which is lv. 15
I might as well use this post to make an announcement as well. Tak, forcednature, and I have decided to postpone the start of the final floor (EXTRA STAGE) to Sunday of next week, December 6th. This is for several reasons.
The final floor is going to work very differently from the prior floors. This extra week will be used for planning. In addition, the standings in the contest affect the final floor, so this will also give us an opportunity to use the standings post-floor 3.
Despite this postponement, the results for floor 3 and the voting for floor 4 will continue as scheduled. This is the new schedule from here on:
Nov 29: Floor 3 results, Floor 4 voting begins
Dec 6: EXTRA STAGE starts
Dec 13: Floor 4 results
Dec 20: EXTRA STAGE voting begins
Jan 3: Final Results
We apologize for the inconvenience.

"Crybabies unite~ ♡" |
I'm really dismayed that I couldn't submit a file for Floor 4 because my laptop just had a power issue, leading me to lose all my StepMania WIPs I prepared, but life really just gives you lemons sometimes... in the worst of times. I don't even know when I'll be able to have it back because of Christmas shopping delaying my RMA shipping.
Anyways, here's what I had to say about Floor 3.
Anyways, here's what I had to say about Floor 3.
255 (st2020 Mix) – 8/10
Pretty great file overall. Would have loved to see you go for the bonus requirement to actually make it feel like a ranged attack of sorts, but it’s a very nice run file that works well.
Artillery - ???
Lock and load! Perhaps one of my silliest gimmick experiments so far. With so many good submissions all around this time, I’m probably not going to rank very well, will I?
Clotho and the Stargazer – 6/10
A runny chart with gaps here and there which I felt could have been more deliberate at parts. The slowdown-speedup with the forward-backward staircase feels a little strange. The chart feels like a 16 overall, but there’s a doublestep near the end leading to one of your stairs. It’s pretty well-thought out overall other than those.
Crab Rave – 10/10
Other than just how much my pants might rip from playing this on pads, this is pretty much exactly how I’d want it to play. It’s called Crab Rave, so of course, crab walk stretches are the most appropriate thing to do for the whole song, and this chart does it just right.
Funk Assembly – 9/10
I personally find 1U-2L-2D-2L-1U or its mirrored variation jarring but other than that, it feels very well-thought out. Those short bursts give off some CHAOS Terror-Tech Mix vibes.
Gothic and Loneliness – 8/10
Perhaps the most straightforward chart submitted in this round. Not an 18, but it incorporates the stretch element inherent to the theme well nonetheless. The runs, though, feel like they have short wide drills there out of spite rather than for an actual reason, which I felt could have been liven out a little better.
I Lose Control – 8/10
Pretty great chart. I’d personally change those 3-panel wide 16th bursts at 135 BPM and that last transition burst (especially since it’s way harder than the similar burst you put near the beginning) to something a little smoother since we’re talking about a 14 here, but it’s nicely paced other than that. Good SM5 gimmicks too.
Makin’ Out – 4/10
Uhh, what is that starting roll into a stop, then surprise speedup resume near the start, with a jump? I don’t feel like that’s not a very pleasing combination of gimmicks to do, especially when the jump is far too close to the target zone. The rest of the chart feels far too easy for a 15, as you have no sustained runs or confusing stretch twists despite the BPM only being 144. The slowdown with the very few 16ths felt like it presented an opportunity for you to attack the bonus requirement which you chose not to take. There are a lot more interesting things you could do with 3-panel gaps between arrows if you took the time to explore, but this particular file feels like it’s been rushed to completion without you really trying to do anything flavorful. Just something you might want to look into in the future. On the bright side, at least all your movements are coherent.
Railgun Roulette – 7/10
“Machine gun” jack steps/trills, huh. It’s definitely an annoying pattern to put consistently at this kind of speed but it works to the nature of the song you picked. The mines definitely make it feel more like the “roulette” like in the title. That said, it’s not always very easy to pay attention to whether they were there or not on something as dense as this chart, which in this case, is important because you also used them to mark footswitches, which are sometimes just straight jacks instead. The 32nd bursts going into stretch leaps present a pretty serious momentum break as well.
Reasons to Run (Fox Stevenson Remix) – 5/10
There’s nothing wrong with submitting an easy chart for a contest, but the way this chart plays just reads to me as “I just converted the whole thing from a single chart to make a normal-looking double chart initially and changed bits and pieces here and there afterwards to meet the main requirement for a contest round”, which not only feels like a really lazy thing to do, but also fails to give the chart the desired flavor for a theme it tries to show. There are some measures near the end with just arrows entirely on the left pad, and when there are 3-panel gaps between arrows, they do not seem to follow any sort of consistency or are built around a theme to them, but instead feel sprinkled randomly throughout the chart. There were some sounds that have stretches and then very similar sounds afterwards that do not have them at all. The quarter notes in the “run… run… run… run” parts presented ample opportunity to prepare those “ranged attacks” but it was sadly a missed one.
THESE BOOTS ARE MADE FOR WALKING – 7/10
The way you used transitions back and forth so frequently at 164 BPM including a backwards swivel, makes it an upper 11, rather than a 10, but what I ultimately wished it did better was incorporating the ranged attacks into the chart more forcibly and deliberately, like I wrote for a number of other submissions. The transitions themselves are enjoyable, I’ll give the file that.
Undercover – 6/10
Pretty goofy chart but it’s also pretty cute. The difficulty distribution is a little odd though, as it goes from incredibly sparse to just continuous 12th note transitions here and there, and it gets quite really difficult for a 12 at times, particularly towards the end. The part around combo 60 is a little awkward because it’s not immediately clear how/which way to turn, as is around combo 112. I like that you leave the player to be able to do many things, like footswitching all the 12th note gallops or actually making all the turns as they come, though. And then come the runs with the wider steps. Not sure what happened near the end but there’s a massive flow break in one of your 12th streams.

"I do DDR things sometimes" |
Last updated: 2020-12-06 07:16pm
The entire group was thankfully able to use their arrows sparingly and effectively enough to make it around this second floor of traps. On the other side, a chest was spotted. Everyone made their way to it, and Spork proceeded to open it. Inside was a team mana refill. Sometimes, luck is there for you.
Breathing yet another collective sigh of relief, the group decides to take a breather and get their bearings.
“Hey, Kex,” forcednature started.
“Yeah? What’s up?” Kekkle replied.
“I may sound a bit crazy, but I could have sworn I saw your eyes glow earlier. Could that perhaps have been some sort of magical ability? Or was it just my eyes playing tricks on me?”
“You saw my eyes glow? As far as I know, I don’t have any sort of magical ability. Was likely you then.”
“Okay, I was just curious.”
Forced wasn’t exactly satisfied with the answer, but it would have to do.
After the break, the group started up the next staircase, or should I say, the last staircase.
When everyone had made it up, they all realized they were at the top of the tower. They had made it. Something amazing could be waiting for them here.
“Welp, I suppose we should start the se-”
Just as TonyAkita had started to say something, something crashed down right in front of their eyes. By the looks of it, it was a giant Wyvern. And it was pissed.
“Holy hell,” Brother Mojo said under his breath.
Just then, the Wyvern prepared to swipe at the group with one of its giant wings.
“Jump out of the way!” Tony shouted at the rest of the group.
Everyone managed to do so, but barely. If they stayed in one group, it could prove to be a problem. Once everyone was a far enough distance away, they decided to split into groups of three. The groups were strategically put together to ensure maximum efficiency.
“Everyone got it?” talkion shouted at the group.
They all nodded, and the groups headed their separate ways. Hopefully, with some teamwork, they could take this beast down and lay claim to whatever priceless relics lie at the top of the tower….
EXTRA STAGE (Final Floor) - Boss Battle!
This last floor is special. It is a team floor where everyone is split up into teams of three and 5 challenges are available to tackle. The members in your team can choose to take on as many of the 5 as they want.
Here are the challenges:
Challenge 1: Your hardest chart meets or exceeds 1000 notes. An extra +5 EXP is given for every 100 notes above 1000. Jumps count as 1 note. (40 EXP)
Challenge 2: Your hardest chart replicates choreography seen in the song’s music video OR its chart in another game (e.g. Just Dance) for at least two measures. (40 EXP)
Challenge 3: Your hardest chart only uses a maximum of 15 16th notes. An extra +10 EXP is awarded for using none. (40 EXP)
Challenge 4: Step a song that includes uncommon time signatures (Such as 3/4, 5/4, and 7/4, for example). (40 EXP)
Challenge 5: Step a song that has been used in a past Z-I-v contest before 2016. Any Z-I-v contest counts. (40 EXP)
Here are the teams:
Team 1: Oni-91, VanEden, about:blank
Team 2: Telperion, NewbStepper, Spork!
Team 3: Astroman128, talkion, TonyAkita
Team 4: CLOUDIO, HaleyHalcyon, t7r
Team 5: forcednature, Pandemonium X, chewi
Team 6: KexMiX, Brother Mojo, Nezemarth
Everyone will still submit separate files. However, in order for a challenge to be cleared, everyone in your team who submits a file must clear the challenge. This also goes for the bonuses in a few challenges. This also means that if someone in your team does not submit a file, it does no harm to the other team members!
Also, when submitting a file for your team, be sure to include your team in brackets as part of the song title when submitting. (For example, for someone who submits "conflict," and happens to be in Team 4, it would be "[Team 4] conflict")
Submissions are now open for EXTRA STAGE! You all have until Sunday, December 20th at 1PM EDT/EST to submit your file for this round.
Don’t forget to vote for Floor 4! You currently have one more week to do so. Make sure to vote fairly and responsibly! All votes should be sent to FoRCeDNaTuRe.
Feel free to ask questions about the EXTRA STAGE or any other contest-related questions below. Good luck, everyone!

EDIT: Just thought I'd include the fact that the teams were formed by use of average score and a snake draft. They were not random.

1: How many songs is each team going to submit?
Is each team going to submit 1 collaborative simfile? Or is each member going to submit a unique song?
2: How is EXP awarded? Once per objective or once per fulfillment?
For example, Member 1 and Member 2 fulfill Challenge 1, but Member 3 does not.
Interpretation A: The team is awarded 80 EXP: 40 for Member 1, 40 for Member 2.
Interpretation B: The team is awarded 40 EXP for clearing Challenge 1.
Interpretation C: The team is awarded 0 EXP because not all members cleared Challenge 1.
3: (Minor point) Are 2/4 and 2/2 “unusual”?
I’m just asking because I love music theory and technicalities.

1. Each individual team member will submit a separate file. This was stated in the initial post.
2. Interpretation C is correct. Everyone (who ends up submitting a file) has to clear the challenge for each member in the team (that submitted a file) to get EXP for that challenge.
3. I'm sorry... but I'm not going to count 2/4 and 2/2 this time around, only because it's not nearly as obvious as other uncommon time signatures.

Is there an easy way to search Z-I-v for "contest files from before 2016"? I'm not too familiar with the site's interface yet.
Oh, and I guess also important, what doesn't count as "another game" here? Stepmania obviously isn't another game, but just to be clear: DDR? In The Groove? StepmaniaX? Pump It Up?
(And I guess sidenote, what's "choreography"? For a video game boss's battle music, would movements that would dodge a signature sequence of attacks count?)

Go here: https://zenius-i-vanisher.com/v5.2/simfiles.php?category=simfiles
Under the User dropdown, scroll all the way to Z. Most of the contest names have the year displayed. Tournament of Immortals year is the same one as its respective number plus 2010 (so everything until 5 is qualified).

"Anyone?...anyone...?" Telperion turned left, then right, then shrugged. "Well, while everyone else is thinking about what to do..." He closed his eyes, then stacked his hands in a relaxed pose - lower palm out, upper palm in and obscuring the other hand's index finger. After a deep breath, he reopened his eyes with a caustic glare at the Wyvern. Slowly, NewbStepper and Spork! felt a welling of energy, an additional confidence that their attacks would land true.

"Witch hunt victim." |
Haley leapt back and looked to her teammates. She solemnly nodded, then closed her eyes to focus her mana at the floor immediately in front of her. A blinding aura began to surround her body, and from seemingly nowhere, a battery of marionette soldiers manifested in an orderly 8-line formation in front of her. “Now’s the time!”

Should satisfy the following:

Challenge 4: It's a 3/4 song
Challenge 5: gameboy573 did this for Summer Contest 2013

Mojo, who had been rummaging intently through his pack, finally looked up. "Ha! Windbags like this one are no-" he started, but realized the battle had already begun and jogged to catch up. "Sorry about that, I, uh... couldn't find my grappling hook." He began twirling the grapple in his hand and asked his compatriots, "First rule of fighting fliers: what goes up must come down... right?"

#3 - 0 16th notes. A few notes were close but I genuinely believe they're biased a little early rather than straight 16ths.
#4 - The whole song is in 6/4 aside from two measures of 5/4
#5 - vincentw stepped this in Z-I-v Summer Contest 2014

"also known as MEGAtive" |
While the others are fighting the Wyvern on the final floor, CLOUDIO has been laying unconscious falling from the bridge in the first floor. When he woke up he saw an image of a person identical to him, carrying a seemingly unwordly sword. He introduced himself as "MEGAtive" and said to CLOUDIO "Take this and help your friends. Do not make the same mistake as me". MEGAtive then chanted a prayer and everything around CLOUDIO went white.
When he regained his vision, he saw his friends in a fierce battle with the Wyvern. With a strong sword in hand, CLOUDIO harden his resolution and run towards his friends. He ran into Haley and t7r side and asked what is the situation now. Getting the condition clear, CLOUDIO now ready to help his friends.
#3+ - Zero 16ths.
#4 - It's in 3/4 mostly with a 9/4 once at the end.
#5 - Silverhawke did this back in TOI5 (2015)

forcednature, badly injured from the Wyvern's swipe, found Pandemonium X and chewi lying on the floor in even worse conditions.
"We have no power left to fight...we can't do it...everything now depends on you..."
Realizing that the fate of his group was now entirely in his hands, forcednature prepares to do what he must.
His cold heart begins to pump very fast, his bruised hands start to shake as he starts his attack on the Wyvern. Will it be enough?
I am not good at writing at all. Sorry

"I do DDR things sometimes" |
Kekkle watched the individual groups fight the Wyvern with the strongest attacks they could muster. With a smirk on his face, Kekkle turned and walked away from the lot of them, completely abandoning his team. Because of how busy everyone was, no one happened to notice Kekkle's eyes light up once more. Something isn't right here....
Sorry for the late post, I was a bit busy. Voting starts now for the Final Floor! Of course, as usual, be responsible with your voting, and send all votes to FoRCeDNaTuRe.
Best of luck to everyone!

Here's some very quick feedback I drafted while I was viewing this round's files. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to DM me
Vairocana - 10
Brain-melting. I need to look at more doubles tech charts lol. This owned. Well paced and good mix of comfortable and twisty patterning. Not much else to say
Babylonia - 5
Watch out for how the player goes into jumps during pad transitions, as well as how the player faces as they cross the center panels. There were some rather uncomfortable stretches. Also I could tell where the 16ths were being cheesed lol
Caliburne - 7
Generally good patterning, and most of the crossover flow felt really nice. However there were some really harsh transitions from P1 down to P2 up, etc. that appeared out of nowhere that I wasn't really fond of
Master Of Puppets - 8
Man I'm not sure how to tackle those time sig shifts. Great pattern motifs that go to the song well. Some turns that look rather uncomfortable unless you know which way to face in advance.
CHOCOLATE PHILOSOPHY - 9
Patterning flowed really well. Subjectively would've liked to see more jumps and jump-based patterning to accent prominent sounds in the song. Freeze section in the 14 was cute!

Apologies for the long wait getting the epilogue and awards out. I will try to get them out within 24 hours of posting this, I've been a bit busy. Thank you for your patience.
Seeing as it's taking a while for me to write the epilogue for the story, I thought I might as well reveal the awards for this contest. Holy hell am I late, very sorry about that.
