My laptop has arrived yesterday, and it's pretty much effective. 2.2 Ghz Quad-Core processor by AMD, and it uses ATi (now AMD) Mobility Radeon HD 4250.

I need to know if I should use medium detail settings for the Source Engine games like Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead, or is it safe to crank it at maximum with this laptop.

Speaking of computers and Left 4 Dead, ever since getting my new computer, I've been considering getting Steam. Also thought about setting up my old laptop as a dedicated server for Left 4 Dead 2 so I can host games with mods like Lucky Star/K-ON! survivor character models, goofy infected voices, modded maps, etc. Almost definitely going to get Steam (eventually), but the server thing is kind of a "Yeah, that'd be nice" but I'm not going to get my hopes up before I figure out what all is required to turn my old computer into a server.

My i5 430m, radeon 5470 can handle everything maxed at skippy playable fps on l4d2 at 1376x768, but I honestly wouldn't bother with it. For actual playing, skipping between 10-30 fps isn't that brill.

I'd go for middle setts, and either use low res with anti aliasing or higher res without.

That said, if you've got lots of ram it can also help since the GPU will nick some of it too, increasing texture performance and all that. (I stuck an extra 2gb in my pc and I now pull a good few extra frames)
