User Ratings

I remember in my very early years on this site when you said something to me that I thought was rather salty. And well I thought it was appropriate to down-rate you. But I soon realized that that was not an accurate representation of your involvement on this site, I up-rated you instead.

So what I'm saying is that the fact that your rating went down so much in less than a day is not a flaw in the rating system at all. It's an indication that maybe you shouldn't have done what you did (I actually did not see the post that you made since the DDR A thread gets too many posts for me to keep up with). And ratings are resilient, they bounce back. I've had a negative rating at one point. But I changed the way I posted and it gradually recovered.

You definitely don't. I posted something in the chat that came off really insulting and salty because I didn't add the emotion.

I can actually see who rates who what. It's amazing how many people will jump on the -5 wagon because someone said something that they didn't agree with.

I can see that. Perhaps changing the way the system works would fix that, or making a whole new system might. However getting rid of the rating system is just avoiding the problem rather than solving it.

There are other solutions, and here are some suggestions that I think would work:
Getting rid of negative ratings and keeping +0 to +5
Changing the system to a Been Thanked/Has Thanked system
Adding a comment box to the rating system for constructive criticism and compliments. Insults etc would obviously result in a ban.

The rating system is the HR of this forum. Many don't like it, but it serves a purpose.

On second thought, I do want to see what would happen without ratings for a few months.

I believe (though I am nowhere near the discussion) that there's a Reddit-esque vote up/down per post system potentially to be discussed.

I can't confirm anything as fact, but I believe it has been on the table at some point.

Eh, No harm no foul, we'll just be seeing someone complaining about something else on the forums, rebirth a new circle of whine.

Up-voting posts/Down-voting sounds like a better solution, you can bring attention to a post that provides a good chunk of information or something to discuss, while it could help users figure out if what they are posting is viable to the conversation or if they are pulling sentences out from the arse.

Not sure about everyone here but I'd say it's been a long time coming.

So, uhh question. How will this affect simfile category requests? If the user ratings are being phased out, then can anyone request a category with no requirement, or will there be something else in place before one earns a category?
