Sure that sounds good but how will we know what calories we burned or any results like that? The whole point was to play in workout mode. Not play nonstop courses.

EDIT: That is the only reason the idea of a workout tracker even came to fruition.

Append:
I don't think we should have a specific set of songs to play on a specific game. It should be where we play in workout mode and post our results whether they be one song or ten rather than a strict setlist of songs to abide by. Like the DDR/ITG and Stepmania accomplishments thread. Otherwise it seems more like a job than something fun to get involved with. What if you can't pass all the songs by the end of the week then what happens?

I cannot stress enough that "Calories burnt" is something you cannot track, and shouldn't care about. Platstyles vary a lot, and so does weight.

Example :

This is me playing Pluto Relinquish


This is Brosoni playing Pluto Relinquish


Even though he's getting an insurmountably higher score than me, he's burning about a quarter of the calories, because his body is so used to the movements of DDR, and the way he's playing is specifically designed to minimise the ammount of energy he's expending.

His knowledge of the song means that he knows exactly which arrows are coming next, wheras I'm making lots of knee-jerk reactions, and double-stepping to avoid losing balance.

It's obvious to everyone watching that he's playing the game effortlessly, while I'm working incredibly hard just to pass one song.

If we both did that on Diet Mode, it would tell us that we'd burnt the exact same ammount of calories, when we obviously haven't.

The only thing you can realistically track is how many steps you've pressed. You pressing 1000 steps obviously burns more calories than when you press 900 steps, although exactly how many calories that actually is, we don't know.

It doesn't matter? The idea is that as you get your body in shape, you'll pass more songs, even time you play the course. Passing 20 songs is a real challenge, passing 40 songs is something the really dedicated can aspire to, and should be proud of, because it's something most people can't do.

What really matters is that you try your hardest, and have a clear goal to work towards.

If there are other people trying to get to the exact same goal, and giving you advice and encouragement, then you're far more likely to push yourself to reach that goal. As you see people working hard, you'll work harder to do the same thing as them.

Wednesday also sounds good for creating this thread. it will give you some time to come up with the specifications about how to do this. Also, i was wondering what if you can't play for that whole week and you miss a course?

Yes I see. This all sounds very good now that I understand. You surely are the right person to run this.

So then a workout tracker would be moot. Unless we can find a way to implement those courses and alternative courses (for those who don't have access to the version we're using) into a tracker.

Then you aren't going to get in shape as quickly as some other people ^^;

The best thing about it is that you can go at your own pace, and set your own little goals along the way. If the first time you try, you can barely get 10 songs in without burning out, then you can say to yourself "I want to get 20 by the time the month is over", and if you do that, you'll feel great.

If it takes you 2 months to reach your goal of getting 20 songs into the course, then you'll still feel great about it when you meet your goal.

Some people will probably get stuck on a certain song. It's one thing to be able to pass Afronova, but passing it after playing 30 minutes of back to back DDR is a real challenge for players who are good at DDR, but aren't necessarily fit. For some people, their personal little goal will be to get past a specific song.

I'm thinking Wednesday 26th January for making the thread, and Tuesday 1st February for starting. It'll end exactly 4 weeks later, on a tuesday?

So we have until Wednesday for people to sign up, and for people who don't have access to Stepmania to post which PS2 games they have.

A score tracker is a REALLY GOOD IDEA, it's just a completely seperate idea to this, which is about building muscles and stamina, not posting high scores. I hope someone can work on it while we're running this event Big Grin

Alright. Well since we will not be calculating weight or calories how will the sign up change?

Yeah, let's change the name.

I think weight is still interesting. I want to compare my weight at the end of every week, even though the goal is to beat the course, not to lose X ammount of calories.

It'll be interesting to see if people do lose weight (or limbs) trying it.

I said I'll put it up on Wednesday ^^;

Judging from the signups so far, it looks like the official course will use songs from DDR MAX 2 USA on the PS2. Everyone signed up so far either has that game, or has a mat that works with Stepmania.

I have an idea. If you want to see how many calories you burn and play in nonstop mode instead of workout/diet mode, just calculate your time that you play and follow this matrix here: http://www.sheerbalance.com/fitness-section/exercise-resources/calories-burned-by-activity/

Example:

Agentmargo
Time: 1 hour
Weight: 130lbs or 60kg
Type of Exercise - Dancing, aerobic

354 calories burned

In a half hour it would be: 177 calories burned.
