what do I have? 2 boots (steel toe), a pair of steel toe shoes, 4 sneakers, and 2 nice pairs to go with formal attire. Wow, 9 for me. eh, a guy's gotta look good right?
Having too many shoes is never a bad thing....unless they don't fit anymore.

how do you manage that? i've got a few pairs of chucks i've had for going on 5 years now, and yes i wear and play DDR in them often. the only ones i tend to blow through are the plain black ones, because i wear them a lot more since they go with more of my clothing(yeah, i'm as bad as a chick when it comes to my shoes matching my outfit).

Try playing in Converse All Stars. They have quite thin soles and you can really feel where you're stepping. They make an audiable sound when they hit the pad too.
That's what I use...Too bad I go thru 3 pairs in a year from playing...

I'm just joking around.I've seen a couple of the good players I know in the area play barefoot. They don't seem to have trouble. They don't do it often though.
I think I have a rather unusual perspective on using my feet for things. I grew up walking to school, even when it was 2 miles to get there. After that I used to walk 1.5 miles to a pottery shop to make pottery nearly every day for a few years. So I think my feet are rather more accustomed to frequent use than most people.

I only have one pair at a time...When one rips, I go get a new one. I usually rip a hole on the bottom part cuz I slide on the Pads and they grind on the curved screws of the Pads. I play on my tip toes just so you know...//You'll see that on my YouTube vids...//

I've been walking to school for seven years, which is roughly one and a half miles away. And I'm only using three pairs of shoes at the moment (one plain black pair with my suit, some Air Nikes I got from Footlocker over in the US for normal lazing around, and some slightly-worn generic-brand sneakers I picked up for £10 for DDRing).

I have two pairs: Dress shoes and running shoes (which I just bought. That would suck if they're not good for DDR, i.e. traction (not a big issue, but...yeah), timing (since listening to my keystrokes on SM and remembering it does nothing to get me onbeat on foot), etc.).

I tried playing barefoot once at the arcade when I first started playing. At the time, the bottom of my feet were as soft as a baby's bottom so I wound up stepping on a screw and it hurt. And you wanna know where it landed? Right in the middle! Ugh!!! I was in pain for an hour or two until I walked it off.
No way in hell would I play barefoot. It's either socks or shoes.

Sometimes barefoot can be hurt, for example I stomped my heel by accident to a screw several months ago... (dammit, it hurts)
the pain lasts for about 2 weeks before I can play barefoot again...

So if we don't have enough experience of playing barefoot, I suggest we should use shoes

But if we experienced enough of playing barefoot, then playing barefoot is won't be a problem

this is my playstyle, i dont know why but i feel most comfortable flatfooting even on doubles. this was my sightread, btw... anyway, playing like this doesnt seem to cause rips in the sides of my chucks, but i used to play on my toes like you do and i had a few pairs rip that way.
*i'm trying to get the video to work, bear with me*
anyway, since everyone else is counting alllllllll their shoes, i will too. 11 pairs of chucks, 1 pair of running shoes, 2 black pairs of steel toes, 1 green pair of steel toes, 1 tan pair of steel toes, 1 pair of regular black boots, and my low quarters. the air force is big on having all the tread on your boots, so as they started to "wear"(these things are still good) they gave me new ones, i'm not throwing out a good pair of boots.
edit- why the hell cant i embed anything damnit? screw it, here's the link for those that care.

The embedding doesn't work because it's a myspace video.
Anway, that Xepher video looked like you were mostly on your toes. It looked like you only slid and used your heels when you did the stepjumps.
As for my shoes, I have my big hiking boots, and two pairs of "kung-fu" shoes that hellrazor recommended that I never wear. I think I have a pair of nice black shoes somewhere, but 5-6 years ago they made my feet hurt, so they're going to stay in whatever dark corner they're in until the end of eternity.

i think most of that is the angle the video was shot at. i'm clearly on my toes for the "gallops" and the ending, but when i'm doing everything else my feet are flat. although when i'm on the P1 pad the angle makes it look like i'm on my toes you can see when i transition to the P2 pad that the angle of my feet stay the same but my feet are flat.
anyway, NOTHING i try to embed works. i can use the actual script to do it or the forum code and it will show up in my preview but not in the actual post. if it was because its a myspace video, the embedding with script shouldn't have worked in the preview at all.

playing barefoot ...
well I think it depends on few factors. there is one I would note...
1. is if you are used to be walking barefoot or doing anything else barefoot (running etc). I am. I can walk on almost any kind of surface without hurting my feet.
I played barefoot from the beginning (playing 9+) and never had a problem with that. and I could play for hours or play difficult stuff. I step on a screw from time to time with my heel or ball of my feet but I know it the instant I feel that metal on my skin so I don't finish that move. Only once I got a problem ... after walking in Lake District for like a day without eating and drinking much I decided to play Hard1, Hard2 and while playing Afronova I stepped on a screw .... I won't ever forget that.It hurt as hell but my foot was ok.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1j4WUzgHGvQ
but people who are not used to play barefoot can get blisters, burned skin whatever from playing. it's the same if you are not used to holding drum sticks and playing drums. when you try you get blisters all over your hands (at least my case...)
--------------------------------
and I found another thing that I hate. Someone taking a video of me when I look like an idiot (that usually means when I play something difficult). Putting videos of me online without my permission is a bad thing...-_- That just pisses me off.

I play barefoot too... and no problem... the problem so far is if I play lots of 8++ songs with high speed (like Sakura, Max 300 Standard, Drop Out and anything else), and I step carelessly, sometimes my feet skin would peel off a little and it hurts a lot! urgh... fortunately, I rarely stepped on a screw

when I play double, a damn little kid tried to press 1P Left so I just shove him away and before I do, gave him a special gift (stepped on his feet)

Arcade panels are smaller? Or are you used to stepping on the edges of the panels?
I was for awhile. Hell, when I started, I had moved up to the X and O by the end of the song. And then I couldn't play at the same level at the arcade as I did at home because I stepped on the metal a lot. I never tried tiptoe, but now, arcade is more comfortable for me and home pads are a PITA.

Arcade panels are the exact same size as home pads.
Are you talking about the way the arcade panels are inset, so that the arrows are lower than the metal around them? If that's your problem, you'll adjust to it after a while. I did.
