You know you started playing DDR when you've got no idea how to spin around properly.
On topic, when you've only played since october 2007/2008 (i forget, probably 2008) and you're already sick of the community, or therefore lack of, with dancing games.
Or something.
I don't know.

You listen to music and you make steps up in your head.
You listen to music and a DDR game materializes in your head.
How I end up stepping 90% the things I do

OH OH i got one
When you make up epic in head movies while you're on the bus to and from uni involving epic battles, ddr cabinets, performances, arrows, magic powers, ponies and whatever the hell else, to ANY sort of music.
Although that's not ddr specific, I've done that for years.
But as one example, at the start of the year I played we know what to do (itg song) and imagined me and my ddr group going down the middle of queen street (main auckland street), stopping at an intersection, being surrounded by fire, summoning the queen of light encased in a blue orb (ala kingdom hearts 2 intro) , then fighting off zombies, heartless, nobodies and other stuff to the songs that followed.
Shortly afterwards it'd be a performance on a flying ddr stage where it would be like those light up dance floors, only it was ddr pads.
The lights flashing materialised arrows that attacked the QOL's orb and made it incandescent, and at the end it'd break and she'd be free but then tension or pandemonium would be next so it'd be me and a couple of other guys 16th streaming arrow bullets at the final boss from metal slug 5 with our arrows while the other didder players spun and shit because itg players can't spin.
Later ones involved Tell and ponies and a giant dirt track and zombies and huge metal doors on the way up to the stage too, which just added to the awesome.
TL;DR - It's fucking awesome in my head sometimes.

Oh man, you're awesome xD
I sometimes makes movies in my head (or picture stuff) but that's nowhere close to your madness. I like your style too :p
A bunch of post already said what happend to me. Like the very classic "You hear a song, you imagine the steps. You might do the file". But i'm not like Chew, in 90% (or more) i don't make the file (i suck).
Funny story about that, i listened to "Winterbliss" maybe 40 times in a year. Every listen gave me some part of the stepchart and more i listened to it, more conceptuel part came out from my head.
This stepchart was always double only.
So maybe a year after, i made a sweet (i think) double expert only.
Telperion played it (it's even on YouTube).
Also today, i knew i played too much.
When you wake up and that the first thing that comes into your head is Seduction(Vocal Remix) you can think that you played too much.
Why was it this song ?
Simple, i spent countless hours yesterday on "translating" some recent Limited Revolution files (my ddr edits for ddr arcade). I ended at almost 5am. The last file was Seduction (ps : this file is not really an edit but more a trainning stuff. Someone asked me a file with only 8th everywhere).
Anyway, 4 charts to try today
Also i'm in the train right now, i can say that i play too much when 90% of your long travels (more than 100km) involve stomping on arrows.
Also, i think that i played with or met all my close friend with ddr/itg (not even talking about gfs xD).
Damn, those arrows are a huge part of me :3
PS : Woops maybe long post here ^^'

When you budget a percentage of your monthly income to DDR and related activities
When you own every home version you can get your hands on, even the obscure or crappy ones.
When you can sing along with DDR songs not sung in your native language (some exceptions apply; maybe licenses)
When people at the arcade recognize you as "the DDR guy"
When people at an arcade you've never been to recognize you as "the DDR guy"
When you are mentioned in a campus newspaper about DDR in some way
When you are mentioned in a newspaper about DDR in some way
When you are mentioned in a magazine about DDR in some way
When you are mentioned in a book about DDR in some way
When you are mentioned on radio about DDR in some way
When you are mentioned on TV about DDR in some way
When you are mentioned on film about DDR in some way
When people pay you for your game (because they want to see something or play alongside you)
When people pay you to travel out of town to play
When people pay you to travel out of the country to play
When you own every home version you can get your hands on, even the obscure or crappy ones.

Guilty.
When you offer to repair a machine for free.
When you buy parts for a machine that isn't yours just so others will get to enjoy the game more.
When arcade owners trust you enough to work on their machines even though you're not an employee.
When arcade attendants turn off bright lights/turn on air conditioners/turn up the volume/put on joint premium/give you water just because you're playing.
When arcade attendants look left, look right and drop several credits into the machine just for you.
When, after you've finished playing, others line up to play what would have otherwise been a deserted machine.
When you've been approached by a child's parent to give DDR lessons.
When you receive applause from complete strangers at the end of a song.
When you've had to berate a parent for you almost stepping on their child because they allowed it to roam free in the arcade.
