So my college is trying to pull some real BS on me.I got a letter from them last week telling me about a "Writing Proficiency Exam" requirement I have yet to meet. Apparently it is this school's policy to force every student to pass a writing exam before they complete 135 units. Okay, that's fine, I'm completely cool with that.
Except there's some problems. After this quarter ends, I will have 139 units. Ah, but don't worry, they're giving me one "free" quarter in which I can still take classes without having a hold placed on my account and prodvided that I take and pass the exam during that quarter, I'll be fine.
...Except not quite. You see, to even TAKE the exam you have to take ENG102 first. Yes, instead of having students take a writing exam and then determining whether they would need a writing class based on your scores (in my mind, the logical thing to do), they assume that anyone who took the test that had not taken ENG102 would fail (from what I hear, the test is extremely easy).
Well, okay, fine. I'll take the stupid ENG102 already! Well, there's a problem there too. Remember that "hold" I told you about, where my enrollment status wouldn't be affected by not taking the test for one quarter. Well I NEED that one quarter to take ENG102! So what I am told? You can take ENG102 in fall 2010 and the following quarter sign up to take the WPE...But during the winter quarter I will not be allowed to sign up for any classes. That's right. I will be paying $600+ for the Winter 2010 quarter to take a writing test.
Okay, but this is really my fault right? I mean, they must've warned me about this when I was transferring to the school last year right? Well, no. In fact, looking through all my transfer papers, I couldn't find a mention of it at all. Luckily, the letter they sent told me where I could find this information. Page 99 of the university guide. How could I be sooo blind?
The worst thing about this: they ONLY informed me about this after it was too late for me to continue my normal school career at this college. Had they warned me that I was approaching the number of units last quarter, I would've taken ENG102 this quarter and this whole situation would have been avoided. Now I am left with three choices:
1. Talk to my counselor to see if any of the classes I took at my junior college would satisfy the requirement for ENG102.
2. Look for an ENG102 class being offered in the summer online at a California community college.
3. Transfer to Cal State Fullerton.
At this point, I'm ready to jump right to option 3, although I have so many friends at my current college
