Z-I-v Summer Contest 2013

+5 - Call Me Maybe [Heavy]; this file actually reminds me of a really good DDR Extreme file to a mainstream song -- it's got really appropriate rhythmic selection, and actually has some bits of pattern symmetry that make it visually memorable too. Despite the low BPM, the chart manages to not be boring and has a very distinct structure that is appropriate to the song - nice work.

+4 - Early in the Morning [Heavy]; interesting file with some nice patterning to boot. There were a few ambiguous pattern choices near the beginning, but the overall structure works nicely for the file.

+3 - White Wishes [Heavy]; easy and to the point, but uses some interesting patterning to make the file somewhat interesting.

+2 - Aegis [Heavy]; chart is fluent and actually brings about a somewhat memorable concept (as in, it plays a lot like a DDR boss file). The syncopation in the chart works somewhat well for the intended pace of the file. On another note, Oni is really stupid and you should feel bad.

+1 - The Sampling Paradise [Heavy]; no double-steps, but the patterning just seems to avoid double-steps and nothing else. The stops work, but feel almost over-excessively done.

Surprisingly, I actually made time for reviews this time. I almost always have the time, I just don't always use it well.

Aegis
For most of the charts I played ( and above), there was a lack of crossovers, especially for a boss chart. The chart was fine for that, but you probably could've used some crossovers on some of the 4ths in the chart at least. Also, it seems you're intentionally avoiding double-tap transitions into many of the jumps on (for example, you're doing U-D-LR jump instead of U-L-LR). However, that actually is a really bad idea at that speed, because that makes things unreasonably difficult.

Call Me Maybe
Good chart. Fits the song well, and the use of crossovers was nice.

Diskommunication
Okay charts. Even disregarding that is easier, I didn't like it as much as the chart. The was stepped a bit more interestingly.

Early In The Morning (We Like The Captain)
Good chart. Although some parts of the song were a little repetitive, you did a nice job not stepping them exactly the same throughout the chart.

HAPPY ANGEL
Fun chart. The ending was probably a little difficult compared to the rest of the chart, but there wasn't too much that could be done to make the rest of the song much harder. Also, there's some extra tags on the chart that makes StepMania 5 say this has Split BPM, when there isn't really any difference (other than the chart's offset being .020 different from the file's default). Also, the beginning of the cut was a little bit weird.

Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride (Eurobeat Remix)
Good chart. Good usage of jumps. I did notice at least two double steps (one toward the beginning, one toward the end), but I don't know if those are intentional, and they didn't really cause a problem.

Hollywood Galaxy
Really good chart. You did a good job keeping the difficulty reasonably balanced throughout the chart and stepping the chart in an interesting way.

LEVEL5 -judgelight-
Nice chart. I liked the use of crossovers and general placement of the arrows.

Mamoritai ~White Wishes~
Good chart. Despite it being a slow song, you kept the chart interesting.

otome
Fun chart. Some of the 16ths were a little questionable, but I can hear why some of them are there (I think), and it's quite consistent, so I don't have a problem with it.

Second Heaven (Samba, Samba, Somebody MIX)
Okay chart. Probably could've have used more 16th arrows, as some of the 8th streams were a little weird.

Starry Eyed
Nice chart. The gimmicks are nice and the patterns are good. For some reason, I didn't really like the file at first, but that may have been affected by my initial opinion of the song.

The Sampling Paradise
Really fun charts. The usage of gimmicks was quite nice, and I liked how the first set of mines on the and (and possibly other charts?) could have been normal arrows without a problem. Also, I did notice the auto-generated chart for virtually every mode that had at least 4 buttons; after all, I had to see what made the .sm/.ssc files so big after noticing they were around 300 KB bigger than my 17.7 KB file. I did initially think it was the gimmicks (since there were ones that I had to make sure were gimmicks and not FPS drops), but without Split BPM changes, that wouldn't make nearly that much of a size difference.

Tino's White Horse (S.S.D.'s Work)
Okay chart. There was a doublestep shortly after the speed up, and the placement of arrows could be more interesting (considering the lack of crossovers).

Y2Z
Okay chart. For its difficulty, it's pretty good, though it could have used more complex arrow placement in some areas.
I get the feeling that the Heavy chart was made first...

It's really nice to see people voting for my first contest file on Zenius, haha

I haven't found a song for this week, nor do I think I will have the time to do one... I'll see what I can do for the next theme, though.

It isn't so much the difficulty rating as much as the layout of the file. Sometimes there can be badly patterned crossovers and there can be a lot of turns that are very uncomfortable.

I can look at the 10 for the chart, but if I'm right about the pattern difficulty thing, then yes heavy would definitely be the better chart. I tend to like the heavy charts more than the challenge charts in the submissions here because of the pattern difficulty thing.

Honestly patterning with 10's is my main problem. I can't really deal with patterning and complex rhythms at the same time and I just end up throwing them out.
