This "Extreme Splitter Rmx" of Scatman is...shit. It's just shit. (words of Oni-91) I'd rather play through a simfile for the original, which is MILES better and actually feels sort of fit for DDR.
I haven't played the actual simfile yet, but this cut feels like someone wanted to ruin someone's chances at ranking points for Round F. In other words, a cheesed submission. TRICKL4SH 220 screamed to be a boss song, but it had SOME sort of musical value and is getting points. Scatman (ESR) is not. There is no way to make this "remix" a file that's not boring, bad, overstepped, or just plain weird, and now usaminseijin might go another round without any points (Platinum). I am impressed usaminseijin went without using a veto for this one, but using one might have been for the better. Poor guy. :/
I am really advising people to consider if your song submission will be enjoyable to step or play because there are songs here (Who What Who What, Jordan, Hopelessly Devoted To You, possibly a bunch of vetoes) that can't come out as dynamic files. While it is possible to make irregular songs work (e.g. FIGHT!), most of the time it's simply impossible, and Scatman (ESR) is a prime case of this.

tl;dr the above post- Your choice of song must be dynamic, have a cut that any stepper could work with, and not relegate someone to making a bullet hell chart. Speedcore ain't gonna fly unless you happen to get an ITG-style stepper for that week.
This one's gonna take long, I have a lot of things to do this week...I'll try to make this one a standout instead of "just an ok chart" like the last two weeks. yeah, this one has to be simple. I'm making a challenge chart with rolls, for those who like them
@darkanine- I have a feeling he submitted WOW WAR TONIGHT.

ハッピーシンセサイザ (Happy Synthesizer) / EasyPop

The original cut that was sent to me was very low audio quality, so I found a higher quality mp3 and recreated the cut from that. Everything is the same as the original except it doesn't sound like it was recorded from a cellphone.

Challenge is an easier version of Expert with rolls. If that's not your cup of tea, ignore it.
And if the song submitter allows it, Cuzco can use this as a license for DDRMAX4.

Luckily, I'm in Hong Kong for like half a day, enough for me to update the sheets.
Thanks Scarz for managing the contest. Also thanks to CuzcoBlocko for the comments and Lisek for the one-day notice.
The tally is correct so far. Please carry on.

ROUND F - Let me know if anything needs clarifying.
I decided to review
charts as well, but they won't really give too much bearing on the actual votes. The
reviews were actually written after everything else, so keep in mind that
charts were not my first impressions of the files,
was.
Art Through Adversity
Wow, I don't know if you do this for all your
charts, but you automatically assume that the player will not do any crossovers and will double-step everything in order to stay facing forward. You were very consistent with that.
Well-stepped! Song is slightly repetitive, as it is from a Video Game Soundtrack, but that is to be understood. Points b/c of the
That was well-made, too, but it doesn't appeal to me as much. This would be pretty hard on a pad. Also, those mines right at the end of freezes were super mean and kind of annoying.
Chamomile Bathroom - Interesting song title. And it's the same singer as murmur twins if I'm not mistaken.
I think the song drifts off-sync as the song goes on. You might have a slightly incorrect BPM. so as for the chart, I don't think this is an 8 X-scale. It's at least a 9, or maybe even a 10. It's probably more of a 7 old-scale as well. Some of the rhythm selections were eh, but overall it is okay (not exactly good or great in my opinion). I'm having trouble telling you exactly what I'd do differently, though.
Hmm...maybe it's just me but a lot of the Freeze arrows seemed unnecessary. I get that some of them were going to the vocals and some were going to that xylophone-like-instrument, but I'm not sure it needs to be accented in that way. I don't really think this is really a 9 either. It's really more of an 8, maybe a 12 X-scale at most. The 16ths don't add that much difficulty overall. (reminds me a bit of Blind Justice in terms of difficulty)
Hello - I don't understand the naming of this song, but whatever. This should be very interesting. And full of 24ths.
Nice. Sometimes it felt like one would have to face a certain direction for a bit too long, but other than that, great!
And I'm not wrong about the 24ths. Good job Lisek.
Hey Ya - Song isn't too interesting IMO, but I think you felt the same way, too. It almost sounds like a Japanese form of Eurobeat: in not so great sound quality
Pretty difficult for a
chart. Probably runs an 11 or 12 X-scale. It could have been toned down a little bit, but it's well-made.
Well you did a decent job charting this song, I'll give you that, but I couldn't hear much of what was going on in the song.
Into UR Heart - Decent Sota song.
Decent chart. Not bad. A bit on the easy side though.
Pretty good chart, I'm sure it would be fun to play on pad.
Looks alright. It doesn't scream to me as stand-out amazing, though. (This song grew on me as I played it more.)
Jollipop - After playing it in C-mod conditions, I was expecting those stops.
Good job. Not overstepped or understepped. It's really annoying that I still haven't PFC'd any of the charts for this song.
Pretty good chart! But when is anything not at least good, coming from you?
Those stops still keep throwing me off, lol. That's not necessarily a bad thing. I think they fit the song well. I'm glad you put them in. The only part of this chart that really bothered me was the the beginning few measures. I think going solely to the drums would've been better. The transition between the soundbites and the drums just feels really awkward to me, like it doesn't fit particularly well.
Natsuiro Diary - Original Rough Demo Version - Not exactly sure why this song needed to be restepped tbh. (well not exactly, but...you know...)
There is no way whatsoever that this is a 6. It's really an 8, probably an 11/12 X-scale. This felt way too hard. It felt like
minus the 16ths. I also didn't really understand why the jumpstreams were there.
Okay, well, the chart in itself isn't bad, but for whatever reason, to me it doesn't seem to fit quite right. I think the beginning of this chart uses too many rhythms that don't exist in the song (i.e. just filler). The
intro was better in terms of rhythm choices. As for patterns, I don't think mini-jacks (double-taps on the same arrow) fit for most of the song. In general, I feel like patterns should have been more flow-y, i.e. not just L-D-U-D-L-D-U-D-L and back and forth crossovers.
It seems like the only reason you made a Challenge chart was to incorporate the 24ths. I really don't think this chart was necessary.
Pink Cloud - Because Gameoson stepped monstercat last year, I'm going to guess that he submitted this.
Rhythms were mostly okay. Patterning needs work here. Now that I think of it, patterning needs a bit of work in
too. When you step a song, play using your index fingers on the number pad, using 2,4,6,8 for down, left, right, and up. Try to make patterns that don't involve using the same finger to hit two different directions. And don't get your hands all pretzel-ed up either when making patterns.
The chart isn't half bad. I kind of like it. There are some doublesteps scattered throughout the chart, but they're pretty easy to work around, so for me, they're not a big problem.
Scatman Extreme Splitter RMX - OMG WHAT IS THIS? Who thought this was a good idea to submit?! This song isn't very pleasant on the ears ouch. I think you were given one of the shortest straws once again...
I don't think all the 8th streams were necessary. Other than the long 8th streams rhythms were okay. Patterning was better than some of your other files but it could still use some work. a lot of your patterns still make you face the same direction. (DUDRDUDRDULUDRDU for example). Try to change it up a bit.
I think your chart gives the song justice, for the most part, though. The beginning feels off-sync. I think there's more possibilities for jumps than UR and LR. I realize that you varied them and the first part, but I think the entirety of the jumpstreams should have been more varied, not just the second half of each.
Stepmania - This song seems so short. Nice job with the gimmicks.
Your rhythm choices at the beginning were quite odd, in my opinion. I think ignoring the main rhythms and going for straight 4th notes might have worked a bit better for the 12th/triplet sections. Or maybe going to the drums in the back (utilizing a few gallop rhythms) I'm also unsure about that 8th stream at the end; not sure the difficulty needed to ramped up that much at the end.
I see you used the CRAZY LOVE jumpstream patterns. There wasn't anything really wrong I could find. The 8th streams worked well to cover the sounds playing after the 16th stream. I think this should deserve some points. I think this chart was pretty well made. I think the gimmicks threw most people off.
TRICKL4SH 220 - Okay this song was definitely worthy of a 10. Many of the gimmicks felt right, but at the same time, there were many that seemed a bit too forced.
I think you tried a little too hard with the triple digit combo counters. The thing about the special notecount thing is that it won't always show up for everyone. My theme counts jumps as 1 combo, so the max combo for this is not 555, but something less: 513. This chart felt a little too hard. It felt basically like
but with no 16th bursts at 220 BPM.
After the 2nd play, I figured out most of the gimmicks, but some still felt weird. I would suggest adding a short 110 BPM section towards the end. There's an intense rhythm, which is then repeated less intensely and then it gets intense again. THe less intense part should be 110 BPM IMO.
*After 3rd try*, agh 1 Miss, no Greats
*After 4th try*, agh 1 Great, right in the last 5 notes.
Despite what this review says, I enjoyed this file (and I was eventually able to PFC this on keyboard)
Turkish March - Ah, throwback to the age where I played this Mozart song on Piano. I guess Ryu decided to make a dance-type remix of this song...
I don't understand the PANDA
The rhythms mostly make sense. I feel like there were some times where you might've copied and pasted rhythms that weren't present in the pasted section. (this also goes for
and :cha
The chart was okay for the most part. In the section with the rolls, the patterning is really awkward. I haven't been able to figure out how to do these patterns without doublestepping. Some of the steps after LR jumps are ambiguous. I think you could have used repeating patterns like in 川崎純情音頭's S-
chart. R-D-U R-D-U-X-X-X-... Also, the ending rhythms are also kind of weird. I feel the bass more strongly than the 8th hi-hats.
Same comments as
With You - This seemed like a really difficult SOTA song to step.
I think the longer 8th streams make this more of a 7 (9 or 10 X-scale). This was good.
idk if I like it.
ehh... tbh, although you got a song by Sota Fujimori, I feel like this is not the best song for DDR
Wow War Tonight - Song isn't amazing or anything, but, it's at least alright
I think you started going to 8ths just a measure or two early. There really wasn't enough worth stepping in terms of a
chart until the drums kick in.
Not too bad a chart. The song is very very slightly offsync, but I still get mostly Marvelouses on it.
Whoa 16ths at 240 BPM. That's kind of a lot. The 12ths at 240 BPM are more acceptable, but I feel like there was one section where the were misused. So in a sense, I mean the same thing Gameoson is talking about.
I decided to review

(casually glances at Over The "Period" CSP)
Ok,
should have been a uniform difficulty. That I regret somewhat.

This song is so flat. No chart inspiration at all

Ok,
should have been a uniform difficulty. That I regret somewhat.

I don't think the chart not being a uniform difficulty is a problem here. Actually, getting harder as the song goes on is a cool thing to have in a file; Songs that get tougher in the second half have a great climactic feel to them. That being said, the music should actually warrant such a thing, which Wow War Tonight does. It's not something I would regret.

SURPRISE MOTHER FUCKER! I'M JOINING THIS BABY!
I'm not sure if I'll be able to get any files done on time but I'll give it a try. Better late than never.

Well, since you already broke the front door, might as well get in, right?
(that probably made no sense whatsoever)
So, um... yeah. You're in the category, have a good time!

"Two milkmen go comedy" |

VIP

Apologies to those who wanted graphics based on the anime the song was featured in or the official album cover, but I think that the Toyota Century featured in the graphics is a sufficient blend of 'VIP' and Japan.
As for Round F, here are my notes:
Art Through Adversity- Interesting how you used mines in the standard to create some 'chaos' for the groove radar values, though there were places within the actual song where I felt placing actual chaos notes would be fitting. The heavy chart is solid, though I would change a few minor things. The challenge chart is out of my skill level, but seems fun. The song itself also reminds me of 'LOVE IS ORANGE' in some places.
Chamomile Bathroom- Overall, a nice chart with a lot of freeze arrow used well, though some of the rhythms in the chorus were a little off.
Hello- Has cute artwork (as expected from Lisek), plus a well=stepped chart after it picks up.
Hey Ya- The heavy chart is not bad, but I was hoping that the Night of Fire samples and the Korean vocals would have made for a very difficult chart (a hard 9 or a 10 footer). Either way, the D1-esque graphics struck me as somewhat humourous.
Into UR Heart- The heavy chart, in my opinion, was good, but far too easy for an 8, and should have been rated a 7-footer. The challenge chart, on the other hand, filled up any missing patterns quite amply and was also fun.
Jollipop- The challenge chart used gimmicks well, but I did not like the 16th notes leading into a jump at measure 20. A very nice song, though.
Pink Cloud- Decent steps, though I wasn't a big fan of the large amount of two-arrow streams and jacks.
Scatman (Extreme Splitter Remix)- Very grating on the ears, but I really appreciate that the stepper persevered and didn't use a veto. The heavy chart had some very fun sections (as well as fitting 16th triplets), though as Gameoson has said, the 16th notes leading into the jump were not optimal. The standard chart was divine for what it was (though I could have also followed the vocals still present), and the light chart was good, though a stream at the end using only 8th notes would have been swell.
Stepmania- Standard was a good chart, but a little easy for a 7. The heavy chart was pretty straightforward, though I was not a fan of the 8th note jump streams, and I felt that the section from measures 55-58 should have been stepped differently.
Turkish March- Not very fond of the up-down streams in the beginning, but otherwise has a very fun blend of patterns.
WOW WAR TONIGHT- The standard chart would definitely not be rated a 12 on the X-scale (in my opinion, more like a 10), and could have afforded to borrow some of the heavy chart's step patterns. The heavy chart is straightforward and feels like a difficult 9, while challenge chart was very loosely stepped, both in the slow section and in the fast section (the 16th triplets seemed unnecessary to me, while the 12 section started early, while measure 68 would have been a good place to insert 12th/16th notes.
TRICK4SH 220- The charts are cool, and I like how the number of arrows in each chart are all a multiple of 111.
Yabis Starlight- Very nice song to step, and the charts do it justice.
Chamomile Bathroom- Overall, a nice chart with a lot of freeze arrow used well, though some of the rhythms in the chorus were a little off.
