Realistically, we're probably going to need 7 or 8 more 19s before we get our first 20, so it'll be a while, if we even get an official one. But I do think it's a matter of when rather than if. Obviously, players still need to get better before charts of that difficulty are even viable. Stay tuned...

Well, it's not like I was asking for a 20, but I did say that if we even do get one (and that's a big "if" at this point), it probably wouldn't be until we've had at least 7 or 8 more 19s. I think some people may have misunderstood what I said.

Regardless, I think what's more likely is that the difficulty scale will be redesigned at some point, or some existing 19s will be re-rated to 20 (think Valkyrie Dimension or Endymion ). Or, maybe the difficulty scale only goes to 19 officially.


I actually think it's curiosity more than anything else, and that the game doesn't feel "complete" without one. But that's just me. You also have to realize that Japanese dance game culture is very different from that in the Western World, in that they may not be too keen on very hard charts. Plus, DDR is aimed at a more casual market than other BEMANI games, so you don't see as many of the very difficult charts with DDR as you do with its brethren.

IMHO, it feels inevitable at this point that we're going to see a 20, and it's probably why a lot of people want it. If they're gonna make it happen, it needs to be while it's still the 20th anniversary. ;)

That's true. The Tokimeki Idol songs that are SO POPULAR in the Asian area are ranked super low to a competitive standard. Not to mention all the other songs that have their highest ranking chart as a 15, maybe a 16 if they want to push it. If they truly wanted to push the hardcore aspect, they'd have no problems dropping 17s, 18s, and 19s on us.

Then again, playing only those difficulties are enough to get a good day's workout of cardio and leg work on a DDR machine. And Stepmaniacs could easily tweak charts to make their own hellish visions reality. Grab an HTML editor, go to the simfile's code, a little change here and there, check to see if it matches the beat (some people will not adhere to this), and voila! A true homemade chart.

I'm positively overjoyed at the possibility of yet another 19 that nobody outside of stepmania players asked for, nor does anyone want to play, nor could any casual ever attempt outside of a keyboard. I care very little for one or two high level players getting a high score on it, those charts are not fun, so there's no merit in playing them.

Yet somewhere out here there is a defense for these very high level charts that have had next to no success, and there are no signs of future attempts at a 19 being any less poor than what we've seen. I don't want shitty charts, why would anyone ask for bad content in a game they like?

So the anger is justified. Because knowing 19s have been bad and asking for more 19s with the delusion that it might be ok this time is foolish. "Hey, last time 5 times I tried to put my hand in the cookie jar I got punished, surely a sixth time it wont happen right?"
