I had something similar happen to me. I was downloading a REALLY large file on Bittorrent so I decided to leave my PC on overnight so it could finish a good part of it. I wake up to find my PC restarted overnight for stupid a update I was seriously ticked to find out that. The one time I crucially need it on overnight, it decided to get a freaking update. Vista is a complete piece of junk
This actually reminds me of a funny thing my friend said. We were talking about how awful Microsoft can be at making things practical and started talking about a game where you destroy their office. Then we had a laugh where one mission would be to blow up their tech support and then we laughed and said "What tech support?"
On a serious note, does Microsoft even have tech support? If not, no wonder why Vista failed, there was no way to send feedback on how cruddy the OS was

Well, any OS that's newer than XP SP2 will force critical security updates if you have them turned on. Either way, you should have your options set to "Download the latest updates but let me choose whether to install them" or "Scan for updates but let me download and install them" if you do things like torrenting overnight or leaving your computer idle with unsaved work on it. Howie, if it literally restarted while you were working on the document, the prompt probably popped up right when you hit the Spacebar, which would cause the "Restart" button to be clicked. That sucks though

It kind of sucks for me because when I bought this laptop this year, the store decided to do a system where you could get it upgraded to Windows 7 when it came out like 2 months or so AFTER I bought it back in March On top of that, some specs of this laptop are really cruddy, so it looks like I should of waited

Oddly enough I rather like Vista. Sure, XP is better, but I'm not gonna get rid of Vista until I get a new lappy. Which will have W7 on it, and likely SP[whatever].
