Konami used the download content in SuperNOVA for one song and this did not become the trend. They used it again for one song in X2 and I believe it will not become the trend.
I suppose for X2 there's 2 songs, I'm so Happy and Theory of Eternity. And for SuperNOVA2, the GROOVE RADAR Specials* are all Internet exclusives, however for machines that has already downloaded it, is still available offline. (All SN2 here all imported from Japan, used machine, but they all have the GRS. No machine in Indonesia utilizes the eAmuse system)
*not to be confused with DEAD END ("GROOVE RADAR" Special) only. All 6 of them.

And what happens when the game is no longer supported by E-Amuse? Arcades are going to get very annoyed if they lose ALL the content they had when they had E-Amuse enabled and then are forced to lose it all or buy the next mix.
Either they will release a final update that makes unlocks stick, or this is a tactic to keep arcades on the latest version of the game. I'm pretty sure it's the latter. Arcades in Japan seldom keep older versions around because they hardly make any money. and there's always something in DDR games, ever since eAmuse was introduced, that never fully unlocks.
Quote: Dancefreak
If Konami have changed it so the unlocks wont stay, then its only just happened as of X2 because there are DDR X imports in the country with all songs unlocked already.
Yup. The arrow codes for DDR X worked even on a locked and offline Japanese cabinet, I personally confirmed that while in Malaysia.

From a programming stand point, this would be completely stupid. First: if they intend for international games to have button code unlocks, then having one version require downloaded content and the international versions getting just codes is a major headache. They're basically programming two different systems. Programming time = higher cost. Having e-Amuse simply set flags is much easier method to use.
From a programming standpoint, it's a method of controlling piracy and export. Even though such efforts have little effect historically that doesn't stop companies from dumping millions into trying. Plus tweaking the Japanese version with a method to enter a button code isn't all that hard. The American version is just the Japanese version with localization and a few other changes.

Except this time downloadable songs were released for DDR, jubeat, Reflec Beat, and I think the rest of the active Bemani line. I think they're serious about using it as a standard deployment platform now. We'll see.
Are we sure that Beautiful Life wasn't just (still is) sitting on the hard drive locked, waiting for an update and simply relocked after a preset amount of time?

These are all playable on every offline SuperNOVA 2 machine that I've played. Including DEAD END.

Yeah, but I said that machines that have already downloaded it will still have it even though they got disconnected from eAmuse server.

Then they are not exclusive, they simply required an eAmuse connection to be unlocked... like everything else on a Japanese SuperNOVA 2. The issue with I'm So Happy and Theory of Eternity is that even after being unlocked, when the eAmuse connection is severed, they disappear.
It would be nice to have some confirmation/debunking of the reports I heard about the whole machine locking again during the outage. I'm thinking (hoping) that it only had to do with items that were tied to someone's Enjoy level before they became fully unlocked earlier this year.

I don't think arcade piracy is as big of an issue. It doesn't stop Konami's "true" piracy problem: Stepmania. I think the reason the bemani series got an download unlock for the jubeat event is because it wasn't a planned feature from the start of development.

The only thing I remember about the eAmuse outages are that the global eAmuse records don't display (and no new scores can be registered except locally on the machine). I don't remember machines locking up again and content being hidden, but this was for already unlocked content. These outages tended to only last for a day or two anyways and it seems everything goes back to normal afterwards. It is nowhere near the catastrophe of the entire Max 2 IR database going *poof* mid-IR.
With the SN2 machine here (before it was taken away *sniff*), even though eAmuse support long since ended, the content unlocked as part of the Zukin Wars events, etc. were all there and selectable.
I'm tempted to say it was temporarily downloaded (and then deleted) content for a few reasons (it may not be that way but it just seemed so). One, because it behaved quite differently that other songs during gameplay (the arrows stuttered while they scrolled, like it was missing frames, something I have never seen on any other song), like it really felt out of place compared to everything else in the game. Two, because it was only ever intended as a last-minute tie in with the movie "Back Dancers", and it doesn't make much sense to keep promoting the movie in theaters years after it's release.

They are planned, so they are already on the HDD. Unlike Beautiful Life/I'm so Happy & Theory of Eternity. I think they're gone without eAmuse because of the machine needs to determine whether someone has played jubeat knit APPEND or not to decide if that song (Theory of Eternity) shows up or not.

Wait, so you're saying without eAmuse connectivity, if it's enabled on a machine then people can register machine high-scores?

If there's no eAmuse the machine goes to Local Mode. So yes, for X2, if there was no eAmuse connection to query or add to the global score database then the score was just recorded to the machine... However, without eAmuse you could not use your card meaning the player has to enter a name manually and that score will never be able to be moved to the card afterward. What -I- am wondering is...
When eAmuse came back did the machines have a bunch of scores ready for syncing or did all high scores set on the machines during that time remain local?

So JP/Asia cabinets that have never been online don't get machine records / manual name entry?
(All US/Europe cabinets get manual name entry for machine scores)

From what I understand there are 3 different high scores displayed when you play a song:
Local highscore
eAmuse highscore
Your highscore
Local highscore is for the machine itself, thus, it gets recorded with or without eAmuse connectivity. Without eAmuse, it will still get recorded, you just have to manually enter your name. When eAmuse comes back, there isn't a queue of high scores to be sent, it simply doesn't send them. I don't think there's a difference between Local Mode internationally and Local Mode in Japan, in fact, I would bet that unlock codes would work on machines in Japan without eAmuse (hence why unlock codes do not get released until Japan gets fully unlocked).

I thought I read before that machine scores were added into the NA X2 build as if it wasn't in the JP X2 build. Anyone (Australia?) have a video of X2 in action?

I think this was the case for SuperNOVA or SuperNOVA 2.

SuperNOVA2 doesn't have local records in America.

I'll say that yes, there is no name entry in Asian X2 machines in Local Mode. I once saw a name entry, but that's for a course on an asian SuperNova 2.

When in Oxnard California three years ago, I played an American SuperNOVA2 (U:A:A) and was constantly presented with a name entry screen. It was similar to the name entry on DDR X, enter name then enter location. The high scores would make their rounds during the attract mode. However, I played a Japanese SuperNOVA2 (J:A:A) in Malaysia and never ever got one. Yet it also displayed old high scores from when it was connected in Japan.

US SuperNOVA2 machines only had local records for courses, not for individual songs.

Hmm... I never ever played courses on SuperNOVA2 (Not in America anyways). Yet I remember seeing the name entry screen often. Did the American SuperNOVA2 display "Local Mode" on the bottom of the screen?

Yes... I wonder if that machine you played on came from Naperville.

The machine records were added into the NA/EU build. It is not available on an Offline Asian/Japan cabinet.
Not even the Hottest Party 3 songs and their Challenge Charts and the BeForU revivals are available on our songlist
