Er, I think you do still have to try and pass the song in freestyle. The whole point is to free style to the existing steps, otherwise just dance off the pad next to someone that is playing.

So I heard that the DDR X US cabs...actually DO use a completely different computer, a nice Dell Optiplex rather than the underpowered Bemani PC, same PC from the GH cabs. So, even through all this, is the performance better on the X US cabs graphically?

I highly doubt this, Konami most likely animated the game only for their original PC hardware and wouldn't have wasted the time up-scaling any of it for the US release.

But hmm, what about that mod combo that lags the other ones? Sure it has enough juice for it? Quad-Core processor I''m told.

KONAMI's design is ineffecient (at least, used to be, but with the way CS X loads song previews I'm sure it's hardly optimized), I'm sure there were optimizations that would prevent that issue from occuring on BEMANI PC. Actually, didn't they patch that? Does that even happen anymore?

I'm somewhat confused...
The new DYNAMITE RAVE...is it supposed to have the same steps as the old DYNAMITE RAVE, or all-new steps?

Going to play the DDRX in Trafford Center tomorrow.
I'll report back with pictures and some poor quality camera phone type video, plus a brief write-up of my impressions.

It has the same steps in DDR X, but is getting its own chart in DDR '09.

Here, DDRX will be present in about 2-4 weeks. dedicabs only (no upgrades)
--
I dunno if the cabs will come with the "pads upgrade"... I'll check when the cabs are up.

This is pretty much the truth.
The pads are terribly unresponsive, and there is blatent audio/visual lag.
I remember back at ATEI, the test machine was so responsive, you could activate a sensor with your little finger and not much pressure.
The new cabs are completely the opposite.
To activate the pads, you need to apply a decent amount of pressure. I personally step quite light, but my PA was way off.
There weren't many "pad misses" since the pads were registering, but when each pad needs an indeterminable amount of pressure to activate, it become nigh on impossible to PA.
So, the pads register at different speeds since you need to stamp for them to work. Some are more responsive than others.
Couple that in with an amount of audio/visual lag (you have to step late), and you've got yourself a really poorly constructed machine. In the time i played there, i didn't once score a AA. I was getting A's on songs that I've PFC'd on the machine at the Troc.
The pads themselves feel ok to play and the overall aesthetics of the machine really isn't that much of a sore point. One issue is because the pads are hard fixed to the cabinet, my brother watching me told me afterwards that i shifted the whole machine at least an inch or two from one song.
