"TAKING IT TO THE PIE" |
I'm just saying that the hardcore fans do have an impact. The hardcore fans are the ones that made the game successful. The only reason I even got into DDR was because I watched hardcore people playing and I was like "oo I wanna learn how to do that". And when a new DDR machine comes out at our arcades, it's the hardcore fans that give the machine it's initial boost of revenue. Just getting people into the arcade is the hard part, getting them to spend money there is relatively easy. DDR brings hard core players out on a regular basis. It's the simple 80/20 rule, 20% of people that play DDR give Konami 80% of its profits. I know DDR has sucked hundreds, if not thousands of dollars from me over the past 5 years.

Well, I'm somewhat excited for the new DDR now that NAOKI's in charge. So far, the fall games are a step in a better direction than X. Yoshihiko Ota was in charge of a very popular series in Japan, but has clearly demonstrated that he is unable to successfully market DDR on a global scale and the series needs a management shift. They have all the tools to make DDR an amazing experience, with great hardware (in Japan), talented musicians, and an excellent game engine. Now they need to use these tools to market a complete DDR game to the world, not just Japan first and the rest of the world as a passing afterthought. The series needs unity across all releases in every region.
That's the goal.
They just don't have too long to get there; I'm worried that X's lackluster arcade appearance in the rest of the world will impact its profitability and will in turn have operators less keen to buy new units. And let's face it, DDR already wasn't a great sell here (there are no local X machines here, no local SuperNOVA2's that I know, only a few SuperNOVA machines and a bunch of EXTREMEs).

According to vgchartz.comDDR hasn't been doing very well lately relatively speaking. Click that link and see for yourself, "fanservice" mixes such as Max2 and Extreme 2 are THE BEST selling ddr games. See, I don't care at all if my decision of not supporting DDR this year goes unnoticed, but it feels good enough for me that my HARD-EARNED cash will definitely NOT be going to their pockets.

Hardcore players know if a cabinet sucks, he/she shouldn't play on it.

Actually...in terms of American releases, the 50-song limited, popular license-filled Wii games are the best selling.

Here's a sales chart comparing Hottest Party, Hottest Party 2, and DDR Extreme 2. As you can see, DDR Extreme 2 outsells HP and HP2 for about the first year, but in the long term, Hottest Party is outselling Extreme 2. And in terms of overall sales, Hottest Party beats Extreme 2 by about 50,000 unit sales, despite the fact that Extreme 2 has a two-year head start on HP1.
Unfortunately, VG Chartz does not have specific weekly sales for Max 2, so it is impossible to judge the games on a week-to-week basis. However, DDR Max 2 apparently has sold 1.09 million copies in America since its release in 2003, while Hottest Party has sold 970,000 copies in America since its release in 2007. So four years apart and an only 120,000 unit difference leads me to believe that Hottest Party is probably at least selling as well as Max 2 did.
And Hottest Party 2 is currently selling better on a week-to-week basis than Hottest Party, so~

with the sales DDR gets, konami wont even notice if none of us buy the game. its not like they track that shit with the buyers name, they just know how many discs are sold. its not like they're going to see a few less sales and say "no one on ZIV bought the game, i wonder why".
This is true, but it doesn't change my decision. My money is better spent on ice cream and my time is better spent on custom simfiles.btw, my view on why DDR X AC unlocks aren't exciting: You already know they suck. It's not simply a matter of knowing what songs are coming, it's also a matter of having already seen them, and deciding there are other songs already available that you'd much rather play. If Trigger was playable on any stage, how many of you would honestly be playing it more than Flowers? Or Votum Stellarum?
The fact that US cabs have turned out nearly unplayable just adds to this problem.

Wii crossovers? Again, old songs, but these were probably the most exciting part of X since we don't know what was chosen and finally can see them played on arcade.
Notice how you say, "see them played" rather than "get to play them"? Hmm....Post #6867 · Posted at 2009-07-25 05:55:08am 16 years ago

I was focusing on the "canon" DDR games, the ones that usually have an arcade counterpart, or with content that is taken from or ends up in arcade games. Hardcore arcade players or tournament-level players usually don't care about the wii and xbox ddr games AT ALL. Sales have been going down since Extreme 2 and X sales look somewhat poor.

Of course X sales were down. Barely anyone was still releasing PS2 games at that time. But if you notice the license list, it was much less mainstream than previous PS2 games had been. We went from SuperNOVA2, with big names like Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Cascada, and Bobby Brown to the most high-profile license being U Can't Touch This in DDR X. I'm sure Konami realized that X probably wasn't going to sell well just based on the PS2's age and budgeted a lower amount of money accordingly (hence the lower sale price maybe). I'm sure Konami still got a swell profit off of X by cutting their production costs.
I don't expect the PS2 version of DDR 2009 to do well either, but I wouldn't be surprised if it did better than X just based on the license list. It's getting a lucky break with a universal license list.

I also dislike Venus, but I thought other people liked it. I don't care enough to look up the top 30 list, and I already said that I intended to name mid range liked songs, not the favorites.Post #6875 · Posted at 2009-07-25 09:50:51am 16 years ago

Isn't the Top 30 list incredibly skewered by the fact that most people would rather play the OMES, than play 3 songs that they enjoy?
I thought that if you ignore things like On The Break and Max 300, which people frequently use to get the Extra Stage, Flowers is the most consistantly popular song?

I believe this is true. I also think it's skewed towards songs people dislike, but want a good score on. I don't view it as an accurate way of knowing what songs are most widely liked.I thought that if you ignore things like On The Break and Max 300, which people frequently use to get the Extra Stage, Flowers is the most consistantly popular song?

I think the last "Favorite Song" poll Konami actually held was on the DDR 4th Mix Plus website, so that they could bring back the 30 most popular songs in DDR 5th Mix.
I shall look for it. I remember which song won, and I know the top 10 was pretty interesting, but I can't remember exactly why.
edit : Oh yeah, it was weird because it was basicaly the songlist to DS EuroMIX
-
DDR 5th Mix Selection Tune From Questionnaire (2001/01/18)
01. Dynamite Rave
02. Dam Dariram
03. Brilliant 2U
04. If You Were Here
05. End Of The Century
06. Butterfly
07. Dead End
08. Captain Jack
09. Boom Boom Dollar (KOG G3 Mix)
10. Luv To Me (AMD Mix)
11. Dub-I-Dub
12. La Senorita
13. Stomp To My Beat
14. Paranoia Max
15. It Believe In Miracles

So tomorrow, I MAY have a chance to play at that Hawaii DDRX machine that was mentioned awhile back.
If there's anything you want to find out, please say so.
(I'll try and get as much info as I can if I have a chance.)

DoLL, SUNKiSS DROP, Flowers, and Xepher have pretty much been solidified in the top 30 lists of SuperNOVA2/X machines.

We're doing vandalism when playing DDR..., is that true?
What do you think about our gameplay? Our step power too hard? Are we destroying the machine?
I really need some opinions from you guys...
We're doing vandalism when playing DDR..., is that true?: Your not doing vandalism. That's like playing Mortal kombat and someone bitching about you hitting the buttons. What do you think about our gameplay? Our step power too hard? Are we destroying the machine?

I really need some opinions from you guys...

What do you think about our gameplay?: That's how I play on hard songs. If people have a problem with it, then that's there problem.
Our step power too hard?: It's not too hard in less your stomping as hard as possible, in this case, your not.
Are we destroying the machine? No, your playing the game.
But some people didn't like that gameplay.
What they're thinking about...?
But, as like you say... You're playing the game. ^^
