I wish I could be a step artist for DDR. I think I would be able to make some good charts.
Same here. Speaking of, I'm wondering about all of these edits I have and what I should do with them. Should I upload a few to see what others think about them?Post #6582 · Posted at 2009-07-09 06:35:26am 16 years ago

I know of at least one American step artist for X, and there are no Japanese names listed on the JP CS X credits under step artists.
Edit: There are two Japanese step artists in the AC credits, which I assume are the X-Special artists.

I could have swore he told he they didn't do X. Either they didn't, or he didn't.

Well, IIRC, the step artists for X were old stepartists that had been "disbanded" after the company moved to their new US location, and Konami sort of commissioned them to do the steps. I don't think the newly hired American did any steps in X.
I'm curious as to which team is doing this next game's steps though.

I hope the X team! And not the X-Special team, they need to find another job.

Yeah see, Japan's DDR X solves all these step edit problems. They get to create edits and find the best edits every week per machine and globally. I think once, that is if, DDR X in the US gets step editing, we could see a nice surge in step edits. I already have a nice library of 50 +edits I'm ready to play 8)

I don't know what else he's done, but I don't believe he worked on the X steps, and if deltaMAX is any indication, I'm glad he didn't. No offence, it's not the kind of steps I like. Then again, I don't like the UNIVERSE3 style of steps, I really prefer X.

they should bring back the step artists that did the Max songs. Those guys could do some killer steps.

I agree. I feel one of the major reasons for this is that they didn't have a difficulty rating to conform to in MAX. So, the songs were generally as hard as they "should" be and there wasn't really anything I was unhappy with in that mix. They had some WTF moments with freeze arrows, but I'll let those slide since freeze arrows were new.
I think a lot of problems arise when you give two different step writers the same song and tell them to make it a 9 and you get two charts that are wholly unequal in difficulty. Especially since the inception of the X scale, it seems certain step writers' opinions of what constitutes a 9 is vastly different from others.

Yeah, we got this from Supernova 2's boss songs. Oddly, you notice that whoever did all the boss songs except the Plutos really though jumps were ok to have a lot of. Unreal, NGO, Hades, Phoenix, the only reason these songs are stupid is the over use and placement of jumps. Even Hades's difficult chart, an 8, is hard for me to complete and I can pass Respect without losing my breath no bar. I often wonder if the steps are even tested out before being released. It seems some steps are very well made and have some potential to be crazy stupid, but flow really well (Blind Justice and AA come to mind) where as other songs seem that they should be straight forward and come off being WTF (Fly Away, Unreal, Arrabbiatta).
If you look at some of the really old stuff, there were some pretty complicated turns and spins (Trip Machine Luv Mix, Get Up N Move, I Believe in Miracles, etc) and it seemed they actually tested the steps and planned for players to look good while playing their charts. Extreme 2 was also excellent in getting the player to make a lot of turns without forced double stepping (Polostvian Dances and Chorus, Passion of Love, Maria, etc). Supernova 1 and 2 just had wtf all over it for some charts. For X, I can't say, I haven't done anything on a pad to judge its stepping styles.

Yeah, SN1 and 2 sometimes felt like the charts were done with HP2 hand markers in mind, except the AC games don't have hands. I didn't have any real problem with Fly Away Mix del Matador though, other than being a hell of an 8. Don't EVEN get me started with Unreal. I would take The Reason's chart over that, even at 1x, every day of the year over Unreal's.
I do agree that Extreme 2 had some great charts to play. On SN1 I usually hung around the home version implant section for that very reason.

I don't really get why people think the SN1 charts are bad, other than the 10s. I'm okay with them. SN2 was mostly bad. The US licenses had some of the best steps of that version IMO. X was a step up in my opinion. I can't get myself to pick a song most of the time because few of the songs draw my attention, but if I pick a song randomly I tend to like the steps. Sound of Freedom is a major exception.
Pluto and Pluto Relinquish have great charts IMO. Too bad a lot of people associate PR with ITG a lot.

I have no problem with most of the charts in SN1 and SN2, at least the ones I'm capable of doing (8 foot max OLD, 10-11 foot max NEW). My problem was that most of the ratings were misleading, amongst others, Venus, Trust, Flow (true style), SUNKISS DROP on S-Pluto and Pluto Relinquish have great charts IMO. Too bad a lot of people associate PR with ITG a lot.
