I didn't find the Happy Mode thing too surprising and skipped over it despite not knowing what it was. It should be very familiar if you've played any non-DDR Bemani game. Almost every Bemani game has a mode like this that nobody ever really plays. Like Enjoy Mode in Pop'n (which, ironically, nobody enjoys
).

I don't see why they need happy mode and pro mode, and why they can't just have a regular mode with all songs.

Because a new player might pick something like Pluto Relinquish because they think that the beat has nothing to do with the difficulty and then they will instantly fail the stepchart, rage at the machine, then quit DDR or something of that sort.
It is just to be friendly to casual players to ENSURE that they will not accidentally pick something that could lose them money because of the difficulty being too much.
Or someting like that..... >>

To present new players with a default mode that doesn't overwhelm them, and only presents to them the material which is best suited for new players.

That's... why the levels default to Beginner mode in regular play and why the default song is something easy. Happy Mode takes away the joy of watching newbies fail Pluto Relinquish and storm off before they realize they get a second song.
You learn by mistakes and by reading the blasted screen, not by forcing all players to dodge beginner mode. xP Ah well, it's not the end of the world, it's just annoying.

They also have a happy mode and pro mode to make you look badass in front of your friends playing pro mode rather than casually doing happy mode.

The best thing they can probably do is simply make it so that you have to hold the button for a little bit to select the game mode, that way you can quickly release if you select the wrong one.

Honestly, ever since playing doubles I've had to be careful with what I chose in my game mode (who here has selected vs or battle mode instead of doubles?) Anything that makes the game easier for beginners is fine with me. It's better than the 15 minute tutorial that you had NO WAY of getting out of on SuperNOVA.

I might be going to Round1 on Thursday night (Past 6PM) with a friend. We are planning to go to AI first, but hopefully I can talk him into stopping by Round1 for an hour of play.

I remember when I first played SuperNOVA. I didn't realize that to get all the music in the wheel, you need to select All Music located at the bottom of the Mode Select Screen

Here's a pad test showing how sensitive the new design is.

I can't tell from the video, unless I was doing it myself - do you think there would be any problem for more lightweight players holding freezes? I saw the right arrow quickly trigger twice so slightly concerned...

I was doing it with as little force as I could, there won't be any issues with lightweight players.

But the problem with this is, how long will it be before the pads jam or stick on due to them not being maintained? If it lasts more than a couple of months ill be impressed to say the least.

I'm 9-stone, and play on the ball of my foot, and I didn't have any problems with the new pads.
