Metroid Prime I&II
Dont have to say much, these games are well known for being great. They have excellent level design and great music. The levels are interconnected in a clever way and create a sense of exploration. I also love the third game but not quite as much as the first two.

(Specifically, Cave Story+ on Steam).
It took one person around 5 years to develop this game, a timeframe that, would normally be a disaster for a Triple-A game, was just enough time to perfect the game. I could ramble on about perfect the game is, from the music, to the metroidvania-style gameplay, the fact that the story is very well-written and that there's multiple endings, but everyone knows how it's one of the greatest ever.
The version I wanna talk about is the enhanced (and definitive) version NICALIS made on Steam over 5 years ago. They made a great game even better by including refined graphics that make it look more like a lost SNES game, and 2 additional soundtracks (the horribad "new" music from the Wiiware version and the definitive "Remastered" soundtrack composed by the same person behind Super Meat Boy/The Binding of Isaac), and that's not including the various unlockable modes, new difficulty levels, multiple save files, and even some seasonal graphics for around Halloween/Christmas.
Sure, the original is free, but you would be missing out on a bunch of enhancements that really make the game shine.
#25 (just in case I forget tomorrow)

In a post-Super Mario World era, there are three camps that will say their game is the best of the 3D Mario games: You have the Super Mario 64 camp, the (few and far between) Super Mario Sunshine camp, and the Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 camp. All three (techinically four if you wanna be specific) of those games are great in their own unique ways, but for years, I've always wanted a semi-back-to-the-basics mario game that was in 3D, but had the level structure of the older mario games where you had a bunch of individual levels rather than 8-13 courses with different objectives. Then came Super Mario 3D Land on the 3DS; it was a great game, but the hardware limitations of the handheld kept it's potential from being fully realized, until a "sequel" on the Wii U arrived.
This game looks absolutely gorgeous, the soundtrack has amazing variety, and it had so much stuff going for it overall, it would take forever to name everything. If you wanted a modern lover letter to the fans of both classic and modern Mario games, this was the perfect example of being the best of both worlds.
This is, without a doubt, a killer app for the Wii U, and the only thing that limited the game was the fact the system didn't sell consistently well. While everyone is asking for a Super Mario Galaxy 3, I'll just be moving to a dark corner wanting a Super Mario 3D World 2. >>

Need For Speed Underground 2
Loved the first one too, but this one's better. I love the Underground games because of the high level of customization options which allow you to make your car look like just about anything you want it to. The feeling of upgrading your car parts as you go along also creates a sense of progress. The races themselves are of course a lot of fun too, plus it has a great soundtrack, especially the Rider on the Storm remix which is the title screen music.

Have you ever wanted to build your own arcade but didn't have the space time or money to do so? Well this game is right up your alley. So many customization options, you can spawn so much stuff, not just arcade games. Movies, videos, images, etc. So many maps to go on as it's a source engine game. You can enter the metaverse, and work with other players to build the ultimate playspace. Best of all, it's free.

Super addictive spin on Pokemon... even if it's just the card game but toooons cheaper than buying the physical cards. I really liked the music, or at least the ending credits song is one of my favorites from the era. I wound up losing this game in my house somewhere... then replacing it for like $5. And then I think later finding my old copy of the game, haha.

Since PM: Color Splash is coming out today, I figured I would make a quick summary of what I thought, regarding the final Paper Mario game to use a regular battle system. ;)
Just about everything is great; if you can get your hands on a copy, and I'm sure it's pretty cheap online or at some Gamestop somewhere, so you don't have much excuse not to get it (unless you don't have a Gamecube or an early model of the Wii)! Nintendo has yet to make an HD version of this game, and it is sad to me. On the bright side, we have custom texture packs if you're willing to play the game on Dolphin, so we technically have an HD version made by some fans.
But seriously, it's up there with the all-time great RPGs, so if you haven't played this one, go get it.

DOOM (2016)
Or Doom IV as it should have been called. Doom is my all time favorite series of games and the fourth major game in the series which came out this year was absolutely phenomenal. Some call it a Halo clone. Those people are stupid. The game is extremely faithful to the classic Doom games while also adding plenty of new elements that make it feel like a new game. Many of the classic Doom enemies and weapons are present, while adding a couple new ones. The level design is also very non-linear and rewards finding secrets. This was my most anticipated game for over ten years and it did not disappoint.

Everything about this game is what truly defines
what a modern DDR game should be like.

Want an experience like Anarchy Arcade? But more 80s / 90s themed, and VR support? New Retro Arcade Neon does just that. It's like Anarchy Arcade, except instead of spawning stuff in game, it's done via a tool. Once you set it up though, it's fun. It also has games like Skee Ball & Basketball that you would normally find at an arcade, designed to take advantage of VR. Though, you can play it without a VR headset, which is a plus for those who don't have VR. If you like Anarchy Arcade, I'd say give it a shot. Especially if you have a VR headset.

Wonderful 4-player co-op, and I get to play as the ever lovely Meta Knight. Difficulty curve was super smooth for my friends and I; started out fine for the non-Kirby players and ended with us racing our fastest guy at the end of some lava wall or something, after dying on some-dozen moving screen stages. Possibly the only thing I disliked about Kirby's Return to Dreamland was the fact that they didn't make another 4-player Kirby game like it. </suck up>

Age of Empires II: The Conquerors
The old king of real time strategy games back in 2001. Great game for its time and it was also partly responsible for me being interested in world history and geography.

I can't say much about this game that has already been said. I can say, it's a fun as hell team based FPS that's worth playing. Especially since it's a free to play game that doesn't constantly beg for money.

Time to catch up...
#25: WWE '13

Out of all of the WWE games, this one was my favorite. The roster was amazing, so much features everywhere, you can kill John Laurinaitis in a wrestling match, there's Story Designer, Story Designer, and Story Designer. CM Punk was also a worthy choice to be on the cover. The attitude era mode was also my favorite story mode out of all the WWE games. I honestly thought Road to Wrestlemania was starting to get boring in 2010 anyways. But yeah, if you wanna buy an older game, that isn't as the 2K games, WWE '13 is the game to get.
#24: League of Legends...quite honestly

This is the first free game I'm putting on the list. It's a MOBA game with TONS of flaws. Besides its tons of flaws, the game is fun overall. Some characters (or "Champions") can be a big influence, the music is peaceful, and you can easily create a gang of friends from this game. The game is meant for the younger audience, but I honestly met more adults than anyone else. Anyways, about the gameplay, the game is 15 minutes at fastest, and an hour at slowest. Enemies can be really fucking anonying, but you can build up any type of equipment, and pray to gawd it would work and help you win. Anyways, if you can deal with a toxic community full of kids who whines about one simple death or a kill-steal, you can try this game out! Practice makes perfect.
#23: Sonic Adventure, after a debate between Sonic Advanture and Sonic Heroes

Sonic Adventure was pretty much the first game I've ever played. It was very memorable. I haven't played this masterpiece in ages and I still remember 100% about this game. It's a great story, epic stages, and 6 different characters! It was Dreamcast's finest. It's... it's just unexplainable why this game is so epic. Play it for yourself. It shouldn't be expensive in stores. Buy it. Now!

#23: Sonic Adventure

Well shoot, I was gonna pick that tonight.... oh well. might as well get that out of the way.
ANYWAY... The original Sonic Adventure was amazing when it first came out on the Dreamcast, and I later got the Gamecube version and the Steam version. I think what made this a good game wasn't just the fact you played as 6 different characters with their own unique stages. It's the fact that they took the Rashomon approach and changed the dialogue a bit to match the player's perspective depending on who they play as.
The game holds a ton of nostalgia for me for a lot of reasons (such as the fact I got the Dreamcast and Sonic Adventure when it was new... right after I shattered my front tooth during recess at elementary school. Yes, it was super painful, and yes, it was a very sweet "get well" present from my parents), but it's a pretty good testament that the game has aged surprisingly well.

Great visuals for it's time, it's fun.
The gameplay is addicting, and it rivals with Mario.

Thiiiink I missed yesterday, so...

I played this when I was like... 13? So it seemed like the best game ever with the best story ever at the time. I wasn't used to caring at all about the "antagonists" until this game, where it turns out they end up being protagonists in the end. Shadow/Rouge eventually wound up being my OTP. I used to play he stuff out of 2-player mode, at least the speed ones. Not having a Dreamcast, Adventure fell off my radar until it came later as DX, I think. So SA2:B is where I got my dose of the joys of Chao gardening. I tried very, very hard to get all the missions but that did not happen at all. ;_;
Then, hmm...

Narrowing down the DDR games as best as I can, SuperNOVA was one of the games I fanspazzed the most over. Mainly because "Move Ova for SuperNOVA" was a thing. I started playing DDR Extreme AC when ITG had dance games on life support (or however you want to view that era just post-Extreme), and was ultra excited to see DDR and its lovely dancers come back. SuperNOVA PS2 (yeah I'm counting both games here, deal wif it) was something I played TONS for both the unlock mode and then the nonstop mode. The song list was pretty fab for my taste: Love Shine, DoLL, Xepher, Red Zone... memory's not working after that but I liked it.

Sonic CD
Game that I loved growing up and still do. I love both of the soundtracks and the whole time travel idea with there being multiple versions of each stage. However the level design can be pretty clunky, and all of the bosses are horrendous except for the race with Metal Sonic. Still, love it.
