I do like the idea of sending in a cut version of the music already. Gives people more of a challenge to work with what they have. Though if they still need graphics or anything like that, they're still free to ask around, am I right?
This also sounds interesting, too. If I read it correctly, though, we only have one veto for the entirety of the contest, right? So we can only decide on using it on only one song for the whole contest? Because that's also a good way to impose a challenge upon people, to be honest.

Now that I think about it, perhaps a better solution would be to leave it up to Silverhawke to decide which entries to refuse, since we obviously all trust his judgement, and then give each player one veto that they can use during the duration of the contest, so they can refuse a song on things like moral grounds after they've been assigned it. If someone uses their veto, or a song gets refused, then how about we randomly give them a duplicate copy of one of the other songs in the round? I think that might make things super-interesting, because you'll sometimes have 2 people trying to make the best simfile they can out of the same MP3 file, and we'll get to see some real head-to-head battles of contrasting styles?

Okay, so I'm finalizing the decision about music file submission.
Everyone must send in game-size files (i.e. ~2:30). But, you must have the full version ready somewhere, in case the assigned person requested it for reasons like a bad cut that causes the file to go offsync.
How does that sound? You can also ask people around for help with cutting prior to the music file submission period.
For the music screening, I hope everyone trusts me with that. If no one objects, we'll go with that system.
Also, CLOUDIO, don't forget that autogenned charts are prohibited ok

Those rules sound about right. Should we also have a roll call for those people willing to offer help in terms of graphics/music cutting and add it to the first post? It'll help others if they need it.

Those confirmed Song Cut rules sound great.

Yeah, I'm thinking one veto each for the entire contest, use it wisely on the 0.1% chance that Silverhawke approves something that you absolutely cannot bring yourself to step, and you happen to get assigned that file?

And if the cut submitted is fine but we still want to cut the song differently?

I'll allow that but not too often. Since IMO part of the challenge is to work your way through whatever you get.

I would rather it be what song we get, not what cut of what song we get.
I prefer to cut songs longer than most, and encode them as .ogg @ 320kbps. Chances are I won't use the file submitted, but find HQ audio on my own and run it through those filters.

well anyway I will still give you the option of getting the full version. music file submission would help in case someone submits a super obscure track that's extremely difficult to find.

Right, and the fact that we would be getting the whole file along with a default cut caused me to assume that rolling our own cuts would be allowed. I just wanted to be absolutely sure... and I'm still not absolutely sure.

Nah, by default you'll be getting the cut version. You'll need to request the full version, so that we know you're going to re-cut it.

Choosing how the song is cut is part of making the file though. It's an interesting challenge to have the song itself chosen for you, but using someone else's cut feels limiting. Like you're just making edit charts.

Well but you still can cut it yourself so it's no problem right?
this is pretty cool
append: to clarify, here's the process:
1. Everyone sends in cut MP3 to me via PM. (just in case, ready the full version somewhere)
2. I will post here a list of the entries with links to the music file for you to step-judge, which then you will PM me about.
- 1 week -
3. After that I will shuffle it up, and announce who gets what. (links are still there)
4. If you feel the need to re-cut it, notify me (in this thread). Also mention whether you need the file or you'll find another one yourself, so if needed I will fetch it from the submitter.
After that the stepping period begins (another week), which is followed by judge-voting (another week).

"On ZiV I'm like Princess Diana" |
I'm just popping in here to give my two cents.
I was really looking forward to another simfile contest because for the first time in over a year, I actually have the time to participate in one and was in the mood to step something. I have to say I'm really disappointed in how this is being run. Essentially, we're not being given the freedom to step what we want and instead we're forced to step something that is given to us at random. Maybe it's just me, but I tend to only want to step things I would enjoy listening to, and odds are if I were to participate in this, I would frequently be given songs I don't enjoy and don't want to step but have to step anyways for the sole purpose of participating in the contest. That really doesn't sound like fun to me. Not to mention the added voting round for judging how hard something is to step (which is completely subjective anyways) is kind of annoying.
Anyways, I didn't come in here to rain on anyone's parade or anything. I hope this is successful and the participants will have a lot of fun with it. I just hope the next simfile contest is a little more traditional. I really have a lot of fun with the various simfile contests every year because they give me the freedom to step things I want while still being bounded by some kind of weekly theme that keeps things different and interesting.

I was hoping we'd have some sort of weekly theme contest on here, since that would definitely serve as a motivation to try out other genres/songs. I hope we do have one after this; it sounds promising.

at first I thought of something like that, but it'd be redundant. We have Summer Contest for that.
btw just wondering, how's it if the deadline for each week is on Sunday 11:59 pm GMT/UTC?
