How does the game suck exactly? The interface, although having some annoying sounds, is more streamlined than ever, it has one of (if not) the most diverse song lists to ever grace a DDR title, and step charts that cater to all levels of difficulty (even if I won't touch the boss songs with an eleven-foot pole, and that's what I reserve for things I won't touch with a ten-foot pole). My only complaint with the machine is the pads, but they don't seem to be any better or any worse than other DDR cabs, just nowhere near as good as Andamiro-made pads (PIU, ITG2). If you're having that many fond memories of Extreme, you were either 1) playing it on a PS2, 2) playing it in StepMania, 3) your memory is fuzzy, or 4) you were hallucinating while playing. When our local arcade got their SN, they had to get rid of one of their two existing DDR machines, either the Extreme or their 5th Mix... by an overwhelming majority, the patrons of the arcade told them to ditch the Extreme, and they complied ![]() |
fond memories of extreme? extreme is just better than SN. i have fond memories of 5th mix and 7th mix. nice try though. not saying i dont have fond memories of playing extreme, but most of those are because of the people playing or what we were going(like when by brother SDGed CSFILSM while i was about 5 inches from his face singing it. that was fun).
as for what sucks about SN, here is a list.
1- shitty IIDX song edits. on almost all of them i could either hear where they cut it(AA), the cut was just plain terrible(AA, rainbow rainbow, no.13), they cut something where it was very abrupt(again, AA) or they cut an awesome part out that could have been really fun(the beginning to murmur twins). moon was the only good cut this time around, and even that didnt need to be cut, you can step the beginning easily).
2- terrible licenses. while i actually thought the chart was good, seriously, MODERN GIRL? holy crap. doesnt really matter, the new la bamba, a remix of love at first sight thats no where near as good or fun as the original, a terrible replacement for long train runnin'(that i did find fun, but is no where near as awesome as the 7th mix version), and feels just like it should. all of those are terrible.
3- repetitive step charts. too many songs do the dat-dat-dat, jump, jump repeat ; dat-dat-jump repeat; or jump-dat-jump repat patterns. there almost all have you facing the same way the whole time, and lack any real depth or fun. this is mostly 8 and under i'm talking about here. the new 9s were great, and i would like to see more charts like no.13 or konoko in the future.
4- background videos. if it has a unique one in IIDX, it should have it in DDR. this includes songs that were originally in DDR and transplanted in IIDX(y halo thar love shine). murmur twins and xepher were cute, but redzone, no.13, drivin', and several others have their own video.
5- axeing of the 1st through extreme dancemania songs. why?
6- judgment and combo display over the arrows. its right at the same spot i personally read X1, making oni mode a no go. i can FC naoki feat. paula terry on extreme and i barely pass it on SN because i just cant read past the judgment.
7- they broke oni mode. they way they give life back is different. its understandable for boss rush IV where the whole point was to not get life back, but they messed with the life for old courses too which i dont like. "easy" courses like NNS or naoki feat paula terry are now a chore to pass for not-so-skilled oni players because the standard songs give back no life and the heavy ones only give back one.
8- terrible oni courses. first of all, the substitutions for some courses are unacceptable. knock out regrets doesnt fit into happy hardcore at all. dance dance revolution heavy is a terrible subsitution of burnin' the floor momo mix, and makes one of the beginner courses unnecessarily hard to pass, another 8 or even the original/blue fire burnin' the floor would have been better ideas. the reduced world tour is pretty lame as well. as for new courses, aside from beforu for u, taka selection, and the boss rushes there are no good courses.
9- the sync is terrible. songs i SDG on other mixes i can barely get AAs on. some songs are synced perfectly, like moon, passion of love, and others. most are so late its ridiculous, like youre not here. 8 greats on dancing stage fusion(for those that dont know, this IS an arcade release) and 32 is my best on SN. i also score about 300 DP higher on oni courses in extreme than i do in SN, as a combination of the sync and the judgment display.
10- no american support. this is more konami's fault than the game itself, but unlockable boss songs would have been nice.

I think the Dancemania thing was caused by some kind of fallout between Toshiba and Konami. Look at the cuts: Compare ANY Dancemania cut in ANY other DDR to say, Golden Sky or Modern Girl. Plus Konami ended up doing the OST with all of the DM licenses cut, and a so-so megamix by Sota. Not to mention the lack of advertising for DM in SN.
It's a shame too, Toshiba has such a great selection of music. Unbelievable, Me Against the Music, and Sunrise are all Toshiba songs though, so who knows.

I don't care about the IIDX cuts or the lack of videos on some of them... because the IIDX transplants aren't really my thing. My Bemani of choice other than DDR is either ParaParaParadise or Pop'n Music, with the occasional GF/DM play thrown in for good measure...

even if you arent a big IIDX fan, that doesnt give konami an excuse to give us bullshit. just because you dont like IIDX doesnt mean they shouldnt give us QUALITY IIDX songs and cuts like they did with extreme. the cuts on songs like V, A, aoi shoudou, frozen ray, pink rose, etc. are superb, and even knowing the songs as well as i do i cant hear where the cut is made(although i do know what was cut out of them, but that is different).

That's because for the most part, Extreme actually remixed the songs (For Extreme). SN didn't do that at all really, AA's the only song where they added something I think. SN2 uses (DDR Edition) for Stars*** (Retuned by HAL) and votum Stellarum (Forest #25 mix), which implies that they are remixed.

not necessarily remixed, but cut for the game. there is nothing remixed about the (for Extreme) songs, and A isnt even one of them but part of the slow down(right before the speed up) was cut and cut well.
abyss is another one that was cut well, and thats from 5th. thats a great cut, and its not labeled as anything other than "Abyss".
also, nothing was added to AA, but a lot was taken from, and done poorly.

"Remixed" in terms of making it more suitable for DDR, not necessarily just cutting.
Noone seems to bring up Golden Sky in terms of bad cuts, that has to be the worst cut in SN, if not the entire series of DDR. Besides being the most obvious cut I've ever heard, it also repeats the chorus way too many times, when adding the second verse would have made it around the same length.

Have you heard the original version of Golden Sky? They do repeat the chorus that often.
Yes, AA's cut is horrid. So was Colors and V (there, I said it). Basically, when Konami cuts a Bemani crossover, bad things happen. Hence part of why I like the crossovers from Pop'n Music, as few of them are actually cut (their length is just about perfect for DDR for the most part).

That doesn't mean that Konami had to do it. 2 verses+2 chorus>1 verse 4 chorus.

colors was cut and re-edited to have a proper ending, and it was cut well. it was well blended and you cant tell where it was cut other than knowing what should come next. if that cut is bad, so is the IIDX cut, as a lot is missing from the 5 minute full version.
V wasnt cut bad, they just took out what like 10 - 15 seconds of the same thing repeating itself, and blended the repeating pattern into what it leads into. good cut IMO.
anyone know where stoic is cut? i know its longer in IIDX, but the music is so repetitive that i cant figure out where the cut is made o_O
how about la amour? the IIDX version of that is RADICALLY different, i was playing it last night and i was just like wow. the DDR version is remixed, no doubt about that, made to be danceable.
and sure the pop'n songs dont usually get cut, but look at the songs they pick from it. they could do a lot better.
and yeah, IIDX songs arent the only terrible cuts. golden sky was already brought up, and how about peace(^^)v? thats pretty freaking awful if you ask me.
