Now that you say it, I don't use the token line that often. Most of the places I visit never have more than 2 or 3 people around, so we usually just take note of who's up and who's next. I only put my token up if I'm somewhere I don't usually go. Otherwise, I would say that the token line is just a lost tradition.

On Technika2 where I play, there's always a card line or coin line, and they've always abided by it, no exceptions. If there's a new player, we kindly explain how it works and everything, and they wait their turn, but we will make an exception if the player has never played the game before, and let him cut ahead of us ^^ then the line resumes and they wait their turn if they wanna play again.
ITG and DDR where I play? Extreme is empty all the time, so there's never a line. Same with ITG, but on weekends, that is crowded, and everyone respects the token/card line.

Used to all the arcades I went to respected the token line... but now I never see anyone playing DDR aside from the failzorz teenage girl or the uber employee who plays for free by using his shiny keys.
