I guess I could mention this here: I have a friend who is currently passing four-footers without jumps (he doesn't like jumps, so he plays with no jumps modifier). I believe I have seen him pass three-footers with jumps, so I estimate that to be about his passing limit. He has actually AAed (and I believe even full-comboed) some four-footers, but last I checked, he has yet to figure out how to time eighth notes, so he can't pass anything on standard. Come to think of it, I think he may have passed a few five-footers on light without the jumps. He also uses speed modifiers, so he can handle Butterfly -Upswing Mix- on 3x on beginner, which was actually a tad uncomfortable for me (I didn't start using speed modifiers until after I started passing nines, and that's mostly In The Groove -- I hardly ever use speed modifiers on Dance Dance Revolution). He doesn't care about playing at the competitive level. He doesn't even believe he will ever pass five-footers (at least on standard).
If you are taking the time to read this, then why don't you be my friend?

"Sarah/Autumn"
For what it's worth Dreamboy, you could teach him to make practice edits or make a few for him. That way you could put in an easy 8th note section like LRLRLRLR (a la Super Star) to get him familiar with the speed.

Ok, my story then...
I saw DDR for the first time when first attending UCM (then called CMSU) for my junior year of college. One of the most commonly-trafficked buildings, the University Union, had a bowling alley and arcade right by the entrance nearest my dorm. The DDR Extreme there got decent use, and being of a musical background I immediately caught on to the rhythm aspect of the game from watching the many players. It transfixed me and I couldn't get over how the Heavy players (later good friends of mine) were streaming and reacting that quickly to songs like A, era, Dam Dariram and HVAM. Being more than a bit shy and rather stingy, I shadowed the beginners for months on the hard carpet (my poor shins! Dead) and slowly started to pick up on the technique behind movement, along with difficulty levels and foot ratings.

Then one time came when nobody was around... I finally worked up the courage to go up there and try some of the songs I had shadowed - something I was sure I'd do well on. So I pick Butterfly Light and get a D x__x; Then I realized I had overlooked something while shadowing, that I wasn't reaching the full distance especially for Down. My last 2 songs were another 3-footer and V, both on Light. The idea that I didn't do nearly as well as I wanted, or perhaps my high standards for letter grades, compelled me to come back again and again.
Play my game Arcana Seal of Rimsala (SNES)!
