I'm not saying stay at home. I want people to go to the arcade rather than play at home.
I'm saying that if you want anyone to take you seriously as a DDR player, you go to the arcade and play your songs. Sorry, but its basically just scrubs that come to the arcade to meet people and show off.
<--elitist right here.

What is this mythical arcade experience you speak of? Is this some secret essence that exists in all arcades, some quinessence that can't possibly be created in anywhere except one of these hallowed institutions? Or - perhaps - are you talking crap? (seriously, what even is an arcade any more? I've seen DDR machines in cinemas, bowling alleys, seaside amusements places, gyms and other places, and generic arcade machines in chip shops - hell, first time I played a hacked boot of Street Fighter II was in a convenience store. Which of these is the One True Arcade(tm)?)
Again, what is an arcade?
Arcades are dead in the UK, aside from London. Your view is restricted to a tiny subset of the world in which this arcade you describe exists.
And if you are still under the delusion that all arcades are the same: Well, your local arcade isn't like a Japanese game centre such as HEY! either - and so what?
I also prefer not to have shitty coin pusher noises playing in the background, so I'll grant you the sound is not the same as in an arcade (though for the record I have an arcade machine running Street Fighter III: Third Strike in the next room, and the Xbox will play SF4 if I really want the noise - as if this is a good thing?). I also prefer to have machines that are well-maintained and looked after for playing on. To be perfectly honest, if I want to socialise I go to the pub/a friend's house/have friends come over (and usually spend 90% of the time NOT playing games)/insert other non-arcade venue here. But hell, if you want me to recreate an arcade experience I could do that. I could also invite my sister and her two young children over to make it an authentic family affair (and watch them jump all over the pads and mash about on my other arcade cab, just like kids do in the "arcade")!
If I'm passing by a place with arcade games (e.g. when I've been to see a film at the cinema), I'll often chuck a few quid in some arcade machines (but more likely we'll play a quiz machine like the ItBox - since everyone in the group can contribute), but the days of me going to an arcade just for the games are few and far between.
Other cultural differences: very few of the arcades that still exist in the UK have pinball machines. Instead most arcades have dozens of fruit machines or other gambling machines (usually vastly outnumbering the video games).
I've had large groups of friends over playing before at home, and have taken my machines to expos before.
Meeting new people playing DDR might have been an option 6-7 years ago, but doesn't happen nowadays (even in London, the DDR cabinets in the largest arcade in Town are dormant for almost all of the week - some community, eh?).
I'm eagerly awaiting you to enlighten us as to what an arcade really is. Teach us!

oh, my bad. i didnt realize having your own cab to play on was the same as going to an arcade

I have no fucking idea, but I'm bringing my Cobalt Flux around to your place next week, placing it ontop of the DDR machine's pads, and playing it like that.
We can see if that's any more or less like the "arcade experience".

@ n00b, what kind of ultimatium is that? If it doesn't replicate the arcade experience, the cobalt flux is a piece of shit? Even if your idea of a good pad is one that replicates the arcade experience, the cobalt (though not perfectly) probably does that a heck of a lot more than any other pad,. Also, I've passed HDVO just fine at home without the pad sliding around all over the place before.
Well that just about sounds like the most anti-social thing I've ever read. What, does your entire world revolve around scores on rhythm games to the point that anyone who plays the game to merely have fun or socialize is a scrub? Good at it or not, DDR and IIDX are in fact games, in the long run they don't matter. "Self proclaimed elitist" or not, get the hell over yourself.

fun fact: i almost never go to the arcade anymore. i attended a ddr tournament earlier and that was about it. I barely play ddr anymore as well. ive been playing popn and DM a lot lately to which i will fully admit im not fantastic.
how come it has to be antisocial? i know tons of people around here who go the arcade strictly for score and have quite a flourishing social life.
come back to me when you are in the competitive scene.
on topic, go to the arcade but if you cant get blueshark or cf

So basically "Fun fact: I'm not in the competitve scene anymore, come back to me when you're a super awesome competive player like I am."
Maybe you should have some merit to warrant going "<-- elitist right here".

no that isnt it at all and you simply arent reading. i still attend ddr tournaments (which if you actually read, you would see that) when i can and play when i can. i just dont have nearly as much time as i used to. this is the case with a lot of the competitive scene
youre so blinded by the fact that you need to whiteknight for everyone because oh no someone labeled them a scrub on the internet.

No I saw it. It just had nothing to do with my point. Tournaments or not, you think that since you can get high grades that it somehow elevates you to a level where you can look down your nose at people who play the game with a less competitive attitiude and convince yourself in your mind that you are less of a scrub then they are.
My God, again with the whiteknight bull, you like ad hominem attacks don't you? No, I'm not "whiteknighting" anyone, I hate seeing someone stroke their own ego to try and establish credibility in a debate about metal pads.
So I'll say it again, get the hell over yourself and quit flamebaiting people to try and bolster your appearance on a forum.

of course people will look down on others who dont take the game as seriously. ive put my sweat, blood and heart in the game. those that arent as good are considered inferior. why? because THATS THE DEFINITION. WOAH HOLY SHIT. it happens everywhere viper. it happens with everything.
im going to keep calling you out on it because you keep doing it. running to the aid of other users and trying to act like you have a holy attitude.
and ill say it again, if you go to the arcade to show off and talk about ddr with other people, you are a scrub. deal with it.
ive already made my appearance and name on this forum.

What's the best metal pad available right now? Red Octane was closed by Activision, so I can't get an Afterburner, and the only other good metal pad I know of is Cobalt Flux. I really want a pad with a bar, and possibly two pads.
I thought you were buying a mchine.

I'm not naive that elitism is rampant. However, just because it's rampant doesn't mean it should be embraced.
Guess all I can say is that people trying to "whiteknight" others also happens everywhere. It's called altruism. It happens with everything. It's pretty much expected in a society. I don't know if you're a misanthropist who likes seeing others get nailed and resents anyone who tries otherwise as having a holier than thou attitude, but whatever.
So...those metal pads...

i see it as someone trying to defend other people. i want people to defend for themselves. i dont expect to have people behind me at all times holding my hand in a discussion. i find it detrimental to a persons intellectual development.
for someone who considers themselves altruistic, you certainly flung quite a few personal attacks against me.

having your own machine is nice. theres just a lot more that you need to maintain. Also finding, purchasing, and transporting can be a bitch. Buying a machine is a huge investment. Get one only if you really plan on playing for a while and are willing to spend the time to maintain it

a bunch of bull shit about how the UK doesnt have arcades so clearly the rest of the world outside of japan doesnt
you sound butt hurt over the fact that i have places to go socialize and you have no choice but to invite friends over for a small get together.
first of all, you can invite all your friends over if you want. it doesnt change the fact that half the fun of the arcade experience is meeting new people. when i was in london, i didnt spend a day at an arcade (trocadero i think it was, i was at a few) playing supernova just because its fun to play DDR. i can do that at an arcade at home. i ended up spending a day there because the people were awesome. i knew NO ONE, but we all had a blast and everyone was friendly. THAT is part of the arcade experience, and unless you put up a big neon sign and open your front door, you cant replicate that at home.
you cant normally get in on fighters in between rounds of DDR at home either. okay you have a 3S machine and an xbox with SF4, thats NOT the same as playing SF under the same circumstances i'm talking about with the DDR arcade experience. you might not get it because arcades you've been to arent well maintained or are non-existent, but there is a big difference between the home experience even with friends involved and the arcade experience.

best metal pads = arcade machines regardless of location
