I just wanna say that I take DDR for what it is. You can't keep expecting what DDR "was", you have to take what DDR currently "is".
It "was" a japanese based game with American games being Americanized ports of Japanese games.
It "is" now a American game used as a family style recreational game.
People complain how the American games suck compared to Japanese ones. These people need a serious head check. While this may have been true at one point, just look at what we're getting now. We probably have had over double the amount of games and songs then the Japanese console games have got over the last 3 or 4 years. Konami clearly does care about the American audience. What people have to rememeber is Konami isn't looking solely into pleasing the hardcore DDR fans cause they are a miniscule portion of the buyers and they much focus on what can compete with games like Just Dance(yuck), and Dance Central(Dance Masters FTW).
Anyway, that's my 2 cents. I will be picking up this game for Xbox this Saturday and I'm very glad I am because this game was a very nice instalment.

DDR fans have been saying the exact same things about American DDR games for a decade.
I don't know where this sudden "love" of the PS2 games has come from, because all I ever remember it being at the time was "KONAMI HATES US, Why didn't we get [Japanese Song X]. Why did we get Eyetoy Mode instead of [Song Y]. Why did we get exclusive licenses instead of Dancemania songs that I liked etc. etc."
The vocal parts of the community have never, ever been happy with American CS games.

I feel it's somewhat unfair to go down that road. Who complained about EXTREME2? I recall everyone being very happy with that game. And SuperNOVA was also good, but I can understand why some are unhappy with all the PS2 games after: they were based off international arcade releases but did not feature all the new songs from the arcade (not even counting licenses), while the Japanese games did. What's up with that? Though usually the American licenses were much better than the Japanese ones at that time (especially SuperNOVA, great choices and steps).
I'm not complaining the games aren't like their Japanese counterparts, I'm complaining they don't live up to their previous American installments, nor do they live up to the English arcade machine currently in distribution. Some more DLC and X2 content would really liven things up, despite the missing EDIT and DOUBLE modes. But they seem to have moved on: DDR PS3 was cancelled in Japan, and NAOKI lately seems far more interested in providing a purely downloadable DDR game, presumably like S+.

@ Tyma: And Konami just trolled us because of those vocal fans.
I remember the PS3 DLC, some people were saying "Why do I have to pay for a song I already have?"
@ Arctic Wolves:
I think it was you who opened my eyes about thinking what the American CS versions have that Japan doesn't have? Yeah, I realized that there are gems in the past CS releases despite being substandard in a way.
Oh, and at least one reviewer on a site said that Extreme 2 was too bright on the visuals (I forgot about the song choices). Let's just say that he is still waiting for his Extreme 2+, since they have given the succeeding DDR games lower ratings.

I think retrospect plays a huge part. I look back fondly on DDRMAX USA and Extreme 2, but back at the time, people were up in arms about the games not having all of the licenses, or having exclusive new songs, instead of [insert random song here].
I think the level of complaining has been consistant throughout the whole series, even though, in retrospect, we were actually getting a pretty good deal all along.

Really? Because I remember EXTREME2 being met with pretty much universal praise from the fans. There was no other EXTREME2 in any region to set any standard, and it contained a selection of old and new that seemed to the tastes of everyone. The only flak I recall EXTREME2 getting was for DMM starting on Beginner for a long time.
I didn't follow the community back when MAX came out, so I can't really say, but I remember the hate for MAX2, and EXTREME, but then EXTREME2 rolled along and everyone was pretty happy. Same with SuperNOVA, actually; people missed a few of the missing KOs, but pretty much everyone agreed the licenses blew SuperNOVA AC out of the water. It just got hated on for the online exclusives, but SMM was well received.
From SuperNOVA2 onward though, yeah, I remember the hate. SuperNOVA2 barely resembled the AC mix which was looked upon fondly, and had very dumbed down license steps. X's song selection in general was disliked, not to mention the US CS game blew 99% of the unlocks for the AC version four months in advance.
This is my experience though; I also didn't hang around DDR:UK much, so I missed that perspective (which I imagine was far more heavily negative on account of the disappointing treatment European DDR got in general).

Yes, EXTREME2 was pretty much universally loved by US DDR fans, especially when compared to EXTREME US.

Gah, I'm thinking of SuperNOVA, not Extreme 2. I remember Extreme 2 getting a 50/50 mix of "Yay! At least we're still getting some sort of new DDR!" and "These songs are a year late. I don't like these licenses. Konami hate us".
I don't remember SuperNOVA getting as much praise as you do, though. This is from hanging around DDRFreak and Bemanistyle.

Extreme 2 didn't have solo arrows or flat arrows. It sucked.

Till this day I regard Extreme 2 as one of the best CS DDRS. Even though it was sort of a catchup mic to get the stuff from extreme we missed it still had an awesome songlist. Even liscence wise it was preety well rounded. It had things from Captian Jack to delerium and even the best cover of genie in a bottle I have heard to date. While I wasn't involved in the community then I was extremely happy with Extreme 2. While it definitely was not arcade worthy it captured my attention longer then any other DDR because of DMM. I still pick Extreme 2 up and play it, however I haven't touched Ps3 DDR since a little after we got our batch of DLC.
If you ask me that's the main reason this game is getting so much flak. It's forgettable, with it's lack luster list of liscenses and hit or miss KOs it's hard to enjoy the game because you complete everything so quickly. Whereas in Extreme 2 you may have unlocked all the songs but you still had DMM to complete and buy all the extras and remaining songs. Ps3 DDR has trophies going for it to keep it alive but not much else. Steady DLC would help greatly because the graphical engine is quite astounding And amusing while playing sometimes...
Okay end Kyles rant //

Personally, I loved all the DDR games on the ps2, besides Extreme, up until Supernova 2. I still appericated it but it felt more Americanized then any other mix in the past. This wasn't a bad thing cause I understood DDR was trying to bcome more mainstream. However, the overall quality seem to deminish gradually. Previously, I could play any of the pre supernova2 games from end to end, mainly depending on my mood. I felt like the songs and step charts pulled you deeply into the game. I could see arrows floating after the fact for a while when I started playing. As the series progressed, I lost motivation to play. It felt like I had to force myself. I loved the planet songs, but putting in X for them alone was hard at times. Then X2 came out, and I prayed for X again.
I literally hate dancing to most of the songs of the ps3 version. Most the songs aren't as deep as older counterparts. The step chart feels like chopped liver. I mainly play it on the controller now. I think criticism of this game is just. Of course people will complain over anything they don't like, however the quality of this game is much lower then anything they would have released in the MAX era. I just pray they learn from this one. Otherwise, it's time to petition newer machines at local arcades.

That son of a gun is proud of putting 20 of the most BORING, SLOW, and UNFITTING garbage licensed songs. I guess that's what cocaine does to you. It fucks up your brain.

I'm pretty sure it was a collective decision process, not up to one guy

I actually thoroughly enjoy many of the licenses on PS3 DDR. Sure, they may not be the best picks for a DDR game, but it doesn't make them bad songs.

A lot of them are good songs, just totally inappropriate for DDR. They really needed to use remixes...
It's also a little perplexing since there are plenty of dance tracks on the hot 100 these past few years that would be much more suitable for DDR.

Maybe, DanceDanceRevolution (PS3/Xbox360) is not the best game of the series after all. I don't like most of the licenses and some stepcharts but a plenty of the new KOs are really decent.
New York EVOLVED needs a 4th version for a future arcade release, I think.

Pretty much this. A lot of the chosen licenses don't work for this kind of game, but the only one that I'd say I actually hate off the top of my head is Need You Now. Everything else at least has some listening quality to them.
