Interesting choice. I only saw Speed Grapher on R1 DVD, hence me not knowing this was used as the TV opening in Japan. Also, it's interesting how EMI Japan translated the title into Japanese (グラビアの美少女, Gurabia no Bishoujo), literally meaning "Beautiful Girls on Film." Hopefully, when my foot is better, I'll give this a shot.Post #505 · Posted at 2010-06-11 09:14:33am 15 years ago

Telperion is the only one that has voted so far. I'm more worried about voting turnout that participation turnout at this point.
My votes:
Empire State Glory - 3 points
Snow Storm - 2 points
Hydrogen Blueback - 1 point
Total Votes:
Chronos - 3
Empire State Glory - 3
Snow Storm - 2
Vairocana - 2
Hydrogen Blueback - 1
Sumidagawa Natsu Koi Uta - 1
And for those wondering, we have already covered the following themes, in order:
01 DDR Edit
02 Video Game Remix
03 80s
04 Free Week
05 BEMANI Crossover
06 Anime Week
07 Licensed Music (upcoming)

that kinda defeats the purpose of it being a contest then. Might as well call it a summer theme pack :\

When you keep in mind that people know that their chances of winning will go significantly down if they vote (since they can't vote for their own simfile, thus adding points to three other simfiles), the submit/vote ratio begins to make sense.
While writing this post, I couldn't help thinking of that game Words That Follow we used to play. I believe the rule there was that if you didn't vote for an entry, your own entry was disqualified.

I sightread all of these at 2-4am, so expect most of this to be me talking shit, and also try and find the point where I ask myself "you're not really a good reviewer, are you?"
Almagest
Heavy - Rhythms there, placement isn't. Also not a fan of the first BPM gimmick.
Oni - Placement actually better. Except for the spins that'd probably break an ankle. No ta.
Blueberry Stream
Heavy - Not quite getting the spaced-out 16th bit. Also a couple of crossovers felt a bit iffy, but that's it. Otherwise very nicely done.
Oni - My main beef is that quite a lot of the patterns in the chorus was A-rotated form of A-B-rotated form of B, etc. That'd work in a song which'd be less interesting melodically, but here it stands out as being repetitive a bit more. I wasn't quite hearing the 16th offbeat jump part. But still, it's good.
DESIRE
Heavy - Sync is pretty off. Also don't really like any of the BPM changes. Steps are standard hi-speed fare, but with some awkward turns. I'm not really feeling it, sorry.
DOMINION
Sync is quite noticeably off here as well. BPM changes also make sense, though to keep the sync nice and normal I'd have changed the 50bpm one to 49 instead and fiddled with the offset.
Heavy - It's there or thereabouts. Sadly, the more I think about it, the more it's thereabouts. I am liking the patterns, it's just that...I dunno, it just feels less than the sum of its parts. With a bit of touching up, this could be quite good.
Oni - Unbelievably inconsistent. Don't like that much at all.
Empire State Glory
Heavy - I was never really a fan of those stop/start gimmicks. Anyway, now that's out of the way, I am liking this quite a lot. Doesn't feel like a ni-OH HOLY SHIT IT'S GONE ALL VERTEX² ON ME. OK, I can sort of see what you're getting at here, but at the same time, I don't think the song warranted it. That said, no idea how the hell you managed to sync it right. Anyway, throwing a C173 on it looks fine to me.
Oni - Now that the stop/start gimmick utilises every note, I'm sort of getting it. OHSIGAV²OM moment is still a bit pushing it. Still, the steps on their own are pretty bloody brilliant. Loving.
Hydrogen Blueback
Heavy - I reckon at this speed it's a lot easier to perform spins and crossovers and that, so I can appreciate them a bit more. Anyway, you know what I think about speed gimmicks, but barring that, great job.
Oni - I actually prefer Heavy more. That said, it's still a solid chart.
Ichizu na Koi
Christ, it sounds like what'd happen if Japan decided to take part in Eurovision 1992. Key-change and everything, could have been a winner. Just saying.
Heavy - A rather good chart there. A few repetitive patterns there, but on the whole quite nice.
Oni - Again, repetitive patterns. It shows because in a few of them, you're stepping along to some notes that aren't even there. Guessing whoever did this did Blueberry Stream. On the whole, it's better than Blueberry Stream's chart.
Ignited Night
Heavy - Karaoke unfortunately. It's OK, but not as good as perhaps I'd have liked it to be.
LOCOMOTION
Words can not describe how much I disdain this musically.
Heavy - Feels like a 'safe' chart i.e. a chart that doesn't have anything glaringly wrong with it, yet nothing that actually stands out that's properly good. Like Munich. Yeah, that was a really fucking deep analogy and you know it.
MENDES
Heavy - The problem with Mendes is that it's a song that everybody who steps it steps exactly the same way, and this is sadly no expection. I reckon you could get a nice alternative chart out of this that isn't a 10+ and holds you to a huge amount of the piano.
RIZING YOU UP
Heavy - This was SO close to being great. It's just that the spins weren't executed very well. Otherwise, yeah, liked.
Ryusei Honey
Heavy: A little uninspiring, yet otherwise quite well executed. I suppose something like this is where you can get away with repetitivity as it's pretty much the same thing for about 2/3 of it.
Sumidagawa Natsu Koi Uta
Heavy: Ooh, I like this. Nice use of 16ths to add a bit of flair to it.
Vairocana
Is this one of the HYPER series with masquerade and hora de verdad? Certainly sounds a bit like verdad.
Heavy: Overall a pretty good chart. Not that much a fan of the patterns at the beginning of the 290bpm section feeling a little samey, but I suppose that's to be expected. End run looks like it'll be a harsh, yet strangely fun bastard to pad.
Welcome
Heavy: Whilst I did like this more than LOCOMOTION, my main problem is mirrored steps. Yeah, things like those long 8th runs are a great idea, it's just that when they're half one thing, and half the same thing just mirrored, it just feels a little lazy, especially when it's whole measures or longer you're inverting. That last run is bang on the money though.
Single Minded Love
Now where have I heard this be...oh yeah.
Heavy: A very competent chart. Only thing I remember as an improvement would be to cut out the airs in the final chorus. That's about it.
War Game
Heavy: Personally I think it might be a bit tricky for a 7. However, it's a good enough chart that doesn't do anything majorly (ha!) bad.
Oni: A chart that's not really needed. The song doesn't feel chaotic enough for the chart to be this hard.
Results:
1st: Empire State Glory - 3pts
2nd: Sumidagawa Natsu Koi Uta - 2pts
3rd: Single Minded Love - 1pt
Current Standings:
Empire State Glory - 7
Vairocana - 5
Snow Storm - 4
Sumidagawa Natsu Koi Uta - 3
Chronos - 3
Hydrogen Blueback - 1
Single Minded Love - 1

The above post is a very good review. I would read it again when my eyes aren't burning.
I am going to give some other simfiles a try after reading his reviews.
