"Oh god what I have dooooone?!" |
Until I reset the player tendencies on the local Extreme, the most played songs were the licenses, and the more popular DDR songs like butterfy and A. Even now, they're still pretty high up there and I believe Dam diri Dam is the current number one.
Not many players I see, even those that are good at DDR are willing to venture outside of the songs that they've played before. They don't like risking failing and wasting their money. Understandable, but it makes for a boring game to watch. I used to play like that myself until I took a player's suggestion and just played random songs.
I also found a few I really liked as a result. But then I don't fail.
It might mean I can't do spins but I don't fail.
But yeah it's understandable as to WHY people play licenses and the more popular songs, but it's sad that more people don't want to venture outside of their comfort zone.

I've learned to not do this. (I've put a dollar into the machine before and got FAXX Oni....wasting my first dollar. ><)
I just make a list of songs that I haven't played in a while or try out some nonstop and oni courses whenever I go.

Well, song preference matters.
I wouldn't want to play something that sounds bad...(imo)

Yeah this (you're not the only one who said that too ^^).I think the same way. Even years ago when i wasn't that good (i mean, i'm not good but i'm better than 3 years ago for exemple) i didn't play the same songs again and again.
I know some players who plays like... 10 different songs only. And it's one Extreme (250 songs) or Supernova (300 songs).
I remember playing a "guess the songs that he will play" game. We found 2 on 3 songs... lol.
Also, i remember on SN, "A love like this" was played a lot. Why ? It's the first song that apears.
So at least 20% of the beginner player will launch this one bcause they don't even know what the buttons stands for.
The other 80% knows that golden sky and honey punch isn't far, cause' they played it a lot already.
True story.
I try to play all the songs on all the mix that i can at the arcade. And then, improve all the score. That's why i have a lot of scores.
I know that i'm not the only one doing this and this makes me happy

Sure, i have still some favorite that i'll play 10 times more than the one i didn't like at all but this is after completing all the "new" songs that i didn't played/cleared yet.

I know everyone's talking about what songs make DDR more accessible to new players and so on, but there's something really, really important that a lot of people don't realise. This was pointed out by an arcade distributor, who observed that :
In every DDR game, the song selection wheel starts on an obscure licensed song that nobody knows.
On almost every game, pressing the right arrow button takes you to another licensed song. Pressing the left arrow button takes you to a very fast Konami Original song, or a boss song.
He noticed that about less than 1% of the people who wandered upto the machine on their own would press the center button to start playing the default song. Most players would go to the right, into the licenses, and pick the first one they knew.
About 30% of players would press the left button, going into the Konami Original songs, assume that the game had no songs they would recognise, and choose the song that they think sounds the most appealing (Usualy something with a big beat, like Afronova). Those guys would either fail or scrape a pass, but would have a much less enjoyable experience than somebody who's chosen a song they knew.
The only DDR game that doesn't do this is Dancing Stage EuroMIX, which starts the player in amongst the middle of the licensed songs, where pressing either left or right from the default song will take you to a very recognisable license. Pressing left or right a second time will take you to yet another. Even when people wander over towards Afronova and Dead End, they usually panic and rush back to a song that they know.
He's pretty sure this is the reason that EuroMIX is the most successful DDR game of all time.

Put it this way, it was released in 2000 and arcades still request it and companies still distribute "upgrades" to it and "refurbish" machines. EM2 being the alternative depending on the region.

To an arcade distibutor.
Time has changed (also one arcade distrubutor isn't everyone)
Popularity of an ddr game depend of many things : Location, type and when.
Imo EU1 sucks dinasaurus balls. Yeah it has some kick ass licence (video kills the radio star omg) so for a casual gamer who plays 2 times a years, it's cool.
I'm not a casual gamer, i'm quikly pissed off by the lack of mods and the offsync/offbeat chart (+ some song who drift).
Back in 2000 it was maybe cool + it was the first ddr arcade game in europe. It was fresh/new for people who saw the machine.
I agree (kinda) to the fact that they can use licence for attrack people. So they should use it during the demos too.
I do remember for SuperNova : Your Rain, Polotvian, Your not here , Golden Sky, hmm... i'm not sure but that's the songs i remember from the demo (when you didn't play).
I think songs like : Jerk it out, La bamba, Toxic, Centerfold would maybe bring a little more people (casual still, but with chance casual become hardcore player).

"Oh god what I have dooooone?!" |
Another problem with some of the games is that songs that have a catchy tune are hidden away in a muddle of other songs.
It's rather scary looking at a large songlist like Extreme's and not being able to see where you are or find your way back to the safe looking songs. When I first played in the arcade I found 321 stars and then was like "OH GOD WHERE'D IT GO" then found A so I played that instead. I should make some sort of poster that tells people how to sort the list into ABC then tell them the easiest and catchiest songs on the mix then stick it on the side.
Or something.
I'm fairly certain though, if we got a DDR x2 machine over here with the LED towers and all that flash lookin bling people would play the hell out of it, or at least stop and watch and drool at the sexy lights. I mean jesus christ the x2 JP cabinet looks beautiful. Shame extreme looks a little bland by comparison
As I keep saying, I'm lookin forward to the day that an X2 machine arrives in NZ. Or more likely, the day I leave NZ and go find an X2 machine, haha.

I can never navigate on the Extreme AC songlist unless I put it in ABC order. It's rather scary looking at a large songlist like Extreme's and not being able to see where you are or find your way back to the safe looking songs. That's how I am with Extreme but every other mix, including ITG I have to series sort.

I must be weird. I always use Series Sort on Extreme AC because I remember which songs are in which game.

I do the same thing. Mainly when I play Double so I can simply play songs from the Max1 folder

I don't know if this is sad, but it took me several years to figure out that changing the sorting order of Extreme showed all of the order mix songs from Max, Max2, etc.
I always found it weird that there were only so many songs on the list.

I was fortunate to play on beware's Extreme build at home before playing on an actual Extreme cabinet so I knew about the songs that were not shown unless you changed the sort.
Very sneaky I might add too.

Wow, that guy is determined. It's nice to know he's making it closer each time. I am really curious to see what is beyond that last speed up if anything.

Agree, this guy really has guts, and a lot of stamina. Each time is closer, but... how can he get the six medals so fast?
