i don't think that's as effective, what if they're not very active in that first week and only make a couple posts?there needs to be a reasonable amount of evidence to rate their behaviour

Like what esg said, I think users with <5 posts should have their rating locked to 0 or have negative ratings blocked.

I think that's a good idea actually.
It'd also prevent people from making tons of accounts to +5 themselves and -5 others
(although it could also just cause people to spam 10 posts)

I think it will encourage members to think about the way they post first. they will take their time to get to the first 10

And I WILL -5 people who BS their way to 10 posts - it is a chance to make a first impression, and, to me, such people want to get high rating numbers for ego instead of actually making a worthwhile contribution.

I've never paid attention to the badges, it'd mean no -100 point bans because bans are all done manually.
Alternatively, if ratings do get hidden, I think Member should be automatically renamed to Noob.

Solution 2+ wouldn't work well if a member's first 5-10 posts are all flaming other members or posting really offensive images to the forums.
When I see people giving -5s off the bat, I tend to remove the ratings anyway.

i don't think so. no one is going to be in a rush "to get rated". it's not exactly a privilege or anything. and if it looks like they spammed those 10 posts then someone will rate them for that appropriately.

That still doesn't keep people for doing so just to have a higher rating. They won't care if the separate account gets a bad rating, if it's banned, they'll continue to make new ones.
