While fighting games are largely unchanged after decades and more recent ones harken back to the original side-scrolling form they originated from.
I dunno, there are some things that should change and some things that shouldn't. The problem with DDR for the PS3 is that too much was changed, it doesn't look or act like DDR it seems more like a fan project. A not so good one. The game may be flashy and "exciting" to new players but tell me who will still be playing THIS release of the game five years from now? Like how I still play DDRMAX2 and EXTREME 2?

To get back to the missing ALMOST judgement. Was it honestly needed anyways? It essentially did the same thing as a full-blown miss: broke your combo and added nothing to your score.

I guess it lets people who are less good at the game know if they're almost doing it right, like ITG's "WAY OFF"

Overall though, this is not the direction in which I want DDR to go. I don't want to cast aside DOUBLE play, I like editing steps, the 1-18 scale works well, I liked Challenge being an actual difficulty level and not a new play mode. I liked Challenging/Oni Mode. It's great to add new things, but so much came at the expense of things I love about DDR, and I just can't support that move.
X2 is taking DDR to where I feel it should be; this is so wildly different by comparison, it's pretty much a new game, and after reading over things the past few days and checking out videos, it just doesn't appeal to me. I wish the best success to DDR, but if this is the future, I'll just have to be one of those elitist snobs pining for "the old days" (or Japanese DDR).
Also, DLC remains to be seen, but at this point we have shrinking song lists compared to games from 2002 and that's pretty weird.

I have a question for anybody who can help me answer it. I have DDR on PS3 hooked up to an HDTV but I have tremendous amounts of input lag playing on the controller with the judgement timing. I have an LG 120 Hz 1080p LCD HDTV. I already tried my tv's game mode and have tried turning the 120Hz off but nothing seems to be working. I have put the judgement timing of the arrows to +15, but it still needs to go higher than that to be on sync and that is the highest the game can go. My friend put his on +8 on his HDTV and says he has no timing problems, but my arrows still need to be slowed down past +15. Does anybody have any kind of a solution or can help me with this situation? There has to be a way to fix this if this game was designed specifically for HDTVs. I really don't want to have to just only be able to play this game in standard definition and I am not buying a new HDTV for one game when mine works beautifully for everything else. Thanks!

Read this. Your TV probably has a slow response time. Get me the model number and I'll check it in milliseconds compared to mine.

You should also read Misconception #5 on this site.

This issue about drove me nuts last night for about 30 mins. I have a Sony Bravia LCD HDTV 1080p, and I had to adjust the judgment to +15 and the display timing to -2 for it to "feel" right. See if that works for ya.

I makes sense to have no Almost but it made no sense to have no Miss.
*Steps off the pad completely*
You almost got that one!

One of the few things this game falls in line with with the arcade series is the simplified judgement, I can support at least that. Does breaking a Freeze give an N.G. or a Miss?

Remember when Konami of Hawaii was considered "outsourcing" DDR development?

I'm just going to throw out there that NAOKI should stick to being a sound producer for DDR. It's a sad irony that the artists who have been working on these games for so long (NAOKI, U1, jun) have been so outdone by TAG and dj TAKA, who previously had very little experience with DDR. Someone really needs to step in and show the CS team how to make a game appealing for all audiences while still standing firm as a DDR game.
Sadly, if this game falls flat on its behind in sales, I fear it may be the end of US CS games. It's quite obvious they already had their budget slashed heavily for this game and music games in general are on the decline.

Welp, it's done. Say goodbye to US CS DDR games after this game just came out
The only miracle that the US CS games have for now would be tto have a GOOD team (like TAG and Taka) to teach them how to make a PROPER DDR game, and not something this site can actually make (dead serious, we have members here who could make an engine, interface, songlist like this and publish it and IT CANZ BE A NEW DIDDER GAME).
I really don't see the game's longetivity other than the DLC it's supposed to have, and no online play = a week's worth of this game and you'll be switching back to Black Ops or DJ Hero 2 or Rock Band 3 or whatever other game that has GOOD longetivity going for it. I swear the Konami team got really lazy in actually making a good game AND a game that would last for a while...*sigh* well, i just wish the future iterations of the game the best of luck then

I agree with everything Pie said. Ironic how the team that has seen DDR through all these years has changed it to an almost unrecognizable point as soon as they got a hold of the reins. I fear that any failure of this game will be seen as a lack of interest in DDR, which I don't think would be fair; I love DDR, but I have no interest in this because it's barely the DDR I know and love (that is still alive and well in Japanese arcades, just like the old days!).
I feel that EXTREME2, once again, is a good archetype for an appealing DDR game. Dancemania licenses for us DDR nerds, but recognizable, danceable licenses that everyone knows at least a few, and a large songlist spanning a great difficulty and genre range. DMM was also really fun.

My guess is Naoki and their team try to innovate DDR but just change too much things, they don't make good job making that "BGAs"?? ... so many random things... in other hand what dj TAKA and TAG made with X2 is really great.
BTW here's a video with the songlist (ty otis1):
Some songs are pretty nice like DKC Crew song or D-Crew one, I really feel bad for Osamu Migitera being part of this version of DDR.
