The 6th KAC DJ TOTTO's SELECTION
remixed by DJ TOTTO Gt. TATSUYA

Challenge 10 (16)

There are a bunch of minor gimmicks to emphasize certain elements of the music. Hope they're enjoyable!
Scrolls are there, too if you want them, but they're not entirely necessary to enjoy the file (and they're relatively minor anyways.)

(Also spent an hour making the graphics, I really hope they're appreciated.)

"hi kids"
Sadly, I can't participate anymore. Real life hit me REALLY hard. My country is being hitted by a lot of natural disasters (landslides, flooding of rivers, strong rains, etc.) and a lot of places are being destroyed. Well, good luck to everyone the rest of the contest.

Beginner - 2 Light - 5 Standard - 8 Heavy - 10 (contains rolls)

I ran out of time and I forgot I had this song pretty much done in my backlog. Wanted to add the video but again, time was an issue.

"."

Where to begin with this one! Loved hearing the song and felt like doing a sim for it. Hope you enjoy. Puppy Face

When hearing the tune, I was thinking about all the classics that I've played growing up, but one that came out rather recently that stood out to me visually was what I ended up taking for making the graphics for. (The game is Hyper Light Drifter for all of you who were trying to figure out where it came from. If you've never heard of it, then consider this a blessing if you will that you are now enlightened about a true masterpiece. teehee. Check it out if you haven't already.)

As for the simfile- prepare yourself for a rather difficult 10, blazing at over 190+bpm! (It goes 197 bpm). Can you be the 8bit Adventurer?

Random trivia no one probably cares about:
• The Heavy chart has 573 steps according to Simply Love. Unintentional, but there you have it.
• My last simfile (Yu No Mikku Ni Ocha Shite) was on the bottom of the whole list in the simfile database for BR2017, but now this one is all the way on top of the list.

Deadline to submit round 2 songs has passed. Only the top 12 will go on to Round 3. There were 20 files submitted for this round.

Also the category download should be updated.

"It's plausible."
I shall start the votes for the week! Overall a strong round 2!

Supernatural (feat. Anjulie)[Sunday Service Remix] [Feraligatr] - 5 (+5)
Eden [Loodee] - 3 (+3)
Hunny Bunny [xRGTMx] - 3 (+3)
The Werewolf [Gameoson] - 2 (+2)
Atlantis [KevinRocker10] - 2 (+2)

Small notes! Sorry if they are not very informative!

I played on the hardest difficulty of each song! These are my opinions!

8bit Adventurer: most of the rhythms are there but i feel that the steps are lacking a lot. There are lots of other sounds i hear but those are not stepped.

All U Need: I am sorry, but the song sounds really uninteresting when it comes to finding steppable rhythms. I think you did your best though with the song!

Atlantis (Darkanine): Is it me or is the sound quality really poor? The steps are fun but the song quality brings it down a lot.

Atlantis (KevinRocker10): This sound quality is much better! The steps are fun too and the gimmicks are nice additions.

Eden: The rhythms are really nice and the gimmicks really help the chart a lot! Good variety of stuff going on here.

Fantastic Three: It is a good file but like 8bit Adventurer, there are lots of other sounds I hear but not stepped. It would definitely be a solid 10 rating otherwise!

GOOD BOY: This one has a lot of jumps in it and it feels a little obnoxious for me. Also, the spin... I don't know if it fits with the chart at all. Nonetheless, it can definitely be a fun file for others, just not for me. Sorry!

Hormiga obrera: I think those are footswitches so I tried them. Some of them are super twisty from the second half of the footswitch portion! Other than that, it is a fun file and the rhythms are great! Big Grin

Hunny Bunny: Super difficult but it is actually really fun! The stop really scared me. The last parts of the chart are kind of weird for me (I think you went from one instrument or sound to another and I got lost on what you wanted to step). The 24th steps are super scary for me too.

Lost Cause: This is a fun chart! I did not like a lot of the mines in the middle section, but I think I know what you're going for. The 3/4 speed up did not feel necessary. I think it can still work as 73.5bpm Smile

Re: End of a Dream: I do not like the speed scroll trick at all. I don't think it adds anything to the chart since I could have just C-modded. The slows did not feel slow and the fasts did not feel fast. Sad

Snakeman Mix: I am on the fence on this one. It has that nice DDR feeling to it but I really like complex rhythms. It's still a good chart though! I hope this one can get a challenge chart in the future!

Supernatural: I really like how the beginning and the end steps of the chart are super relaxing. The middle section is SUPER juicy. All the parts that I can hear are stepped!

Surf: Really relaxing song Smile. I really like the chart too. The triple step stuff (where one of your foot is on the freeze and the other foot is stepping the others) did not feel that great. It looks like a staircase and I wanted to use both of my feet.

Synthesizers: I played this song before in one of Sudzi's pack and Sudzi did a really good job with it. I tried this one and it's also a good chart. I have no comments on this one.

The 6th KAC DJ TOTTO's SELECTION: I enjoy the steps, but the song (or mix) does not really sound that great. The slows are very abrupt and random. They do make sense, but the mix is really weird for me to catch on all of the speed changes.

The Werewolf: Really nice chart and really great graphics to go with it too! Everything is great except the spin near the end. That caught me off-guard.

We Are: Just like the snakeman mix, this one has that DDR feeling too. It is a good chart, but it is not my style because I like more complex rhythms.

Xenogenesis: It took me a while, but I figured out that you were stepping the soft hihats! I could not hear it at first until I had to plug in my headphones. The steps were pretty fun. Smile

I hope people enjoy Cyberpunk Life too. That was a really fun song to make a stepchart. Tongue

That spin is designed to be playable with footswitches if that's what you prefer. Wink

I'm pretty sure it's just you. I was unable to tell a difference in the sound quality with my headphones. And my audio file is only 300 KB less, so that should hardly make a difference. If you can, please elaborate.

I'm not mad, I'm just concerned Smile

The sound quality of your cut isn't poor per se: it's just that there's a huge suck-out in the mid-range (the range of frequencies between the bass (aka, low-range of frequencies) and treble (aka, high-range of frequencies)), that results in a V-Shaped sound, achieved by accentuating the bass and treble with an equalizer, or EQ. This comes off to some people, like myself and ROOK, as "poor sound quality" except that in the case of your audio file, it is not "muddy" (as in treble information is barely present), but rather fatiguing, with the treble accentuated, rather than balanced from the original audio file, like KevinRocker's stepfile.

In other words, your audio cut is equalized when it should not have been. When cutting a track, you generally should cut it from the original audio file (the source) without any alterations, as you have in your first stepfile (Rich Boy) of BR.

I have honestly ho idea why or how that happened, since I did not add an EQ at all. I will see if I can fix the problem.

"Elsewhere known as borealis"
Here were some very tough votes. This round was quite an all-star pack. I'll be keeping almost all of the files, which doesn't often happen, I generally delete most of each round at the end.
And the score goes to...
+4 Synthesizers
+4 The 6th KAC Selection
+3 Good Boy
+2 The Werewolf
+2 Lost Cause

HM Supernatural (Would split the vote with Lost Cause if possible)

Our new totals:
Supernatural (feat. Anjulie)[Sunday Service Remix] [Feraligatr] - 5
The 6th KAC DJ TOTTO's Selection [mf32892] - 4
Synthesizers [Oni-91] - 4
The Werewolf [Gameoson] - 4
GOOD BOY [ledgam3r1279] - 3

Eden [Loodee] - 3
Hunny Bunny [xRGTMx] - 3
Lost Cause [Spork!] - 2
Atlantis [KevinRocker10] - 2

Shuffle-style votes (if they were to happen)
+2 Synthesizers, The 6th KAC Selection, Good Boy, The Werewolf, Lost Cause, Supernatural
+1 Eden, Re: End of a Dream, Xenogenesis
HM: Atlantis (BOTH)

Not around here too often anymore, but I still play DDR & maimai!
My final contest run was in my signature so I guess I'll keep it here for those who wanna play my last few charts:

"Fairy-nough"
Hi there. This round was a fair bit stronger but it should be considering half of the entrants were eliminated. No true knockouts yet but I feel like the best charts this round were better than last round's bests. I wouldn't have minded the ability to spread the points to a few more people though.

If you want a full review, PM me and I'll follow up Friday or so.

Lucky winners:
Supernatural (feat. Anjulie)(Sunday Service Remix) +5
Lost Cause +4
Atlantis [KevinRocker10] +3 (but this isn't an 11 haha)
Surf +2
Cyberpunk Life +1

HMs (no particular order):
Hunny Bunny
The 6th KAC DJ TOTTO's Selection
The Werewolf
Atlantis (dark)

The vast majority of the charts were at least decent though, imo, in contrast to the last round where there was a chunk I really didn't like.

Totals:
Supernatural (feat. Anjulie)[Sunday Service Remix] [Feraligatr] - 12
The Werewolf [Gameoson] - 9
Synthesizers [Oni-91] - 8
Lost Cause [Spork!] - 6
Atlantis [KevinRocker10] - 5
GOOD BOY [ledgam3r1279] - 5
Eden [Loodee] - 4
The 6th KAC DJ TOTTO's Selection [mf32892] - 4
Hunny Bunny [xRGTMx] - 3
Surf [The Legendary DJXYZ] - 2
Cyberpunk Life [ROOK] - 1

https://i.imgur.com/tWT2soq.png

Thanks to Lord Toon for the wonderful sig image!

If you'd like a review on a contest chart, PM me! (Reviews will probably be given on or around the Friday after the PM fyi.)

"Let's Do the Rain Dance"
MY NOTES
8-bit adventurer (10) is a 4/5 in my book
Some patterns seemed a tad bit subjectively iffy and the difficulty balance was a bit odd, but it was a blast to play
4.5/5 The (9) basically fixes all the problems I had with the 10

All U Need (10) is a 3/5 for me
Difficulty balance was weird, but the chart was mostly fun otherwise
but then there's the issue of several ghost rhythms in tandem with other rhythms being ignored
All U Need (8) is a 3.5/5 for me
It doesn't do anything wrong, but it's kinda boring, especially for an 8

Atlantis (the one that has 3 difficulties) (9) gets a 3/5 from me
It's got good effort, but two major sticking points for me:
1. It's rated a 9 but has gimmicks and rhythms that fit on hard 10s, bad miscalculation on the writer's part
2. the flow was definitely trying as it had some advanced tech snuck in, but a lot of the time the patterns relied too much on resetting, breaking the feeling of natural flow

Atlantis (the one with the 11) (11) gets a 3.5/5 from me
It kinda has the opposite problem in that quite a few patterns feel too straightforward for its own good
highlight being the ending streams which are mostly stairs
Also, side-note, bad DISPLAYBPM for M-mods

Cyberpunk Life (10) was rather charming, a 4/5 for me
My only nag is the inconsistency on how to chart the accents in the intro/outro
Intro just makes them single notes while Outro emphasizes them with jumps

Eden (11) gets a 2.5/5
It has ideas, but it's so obnoxious with its effects and the jacks
*crosses fingers the 10 has no gimmicks*
https://media.giphy.com/media/b4pPnoO1QDd1C/giphy.gif
But still, it gets a 3/5
As I said, the effects are obnoxious, but now that there's less hyper-writing of the rhythms, the tells are a little easier to spot

FANTASTIC THREE (10) is a 3/5 for me
There are like a bunch of things subtly wrong with it that add up
I really liked the 8
I give it a 4/5
Felt cohesive, for lack of a better term

GOOD BOY gets a 3.5/5 from me
See criticism #2 for Atlantis (9)
The (8) gets the same score for the same reason

Hormiga Obrera gets a 4.5/5 easily
Advanced tech, intense feeling of connection to the music, consistency, so TASTY
The 8 was surprisingly meaty for its level and was incredibly fun; 4.5/5 too

Hunny Bunny (12) gets a 3/5 from me
Too much going and too fast that the footswitching requirement is just evil
Plus I'm pretty sure twice there isn't a tell for it
Hunny Bunny (11) is much better, 4/5 for me
Still feels connected to the music and is a lot less confusing on tech
Plus it uses pivots, and I love me some pivots done right

LOST CAUSE (10) gets a 3/5 from me
As soon as it starts trying gimmicks, it suffers
LOST CAUSE (9) is marginally better at 3.5/5
I question some of its decisions but less so than the 10

RE: End of a Dream (12) gets a 2/5 from me
Patterns were way too jacky for me
and the gimmick is honestly one of the most pointless I've ever witnessed
Also, M-mod messery because of it, yay

Snakeman (9) was...okay. 3.5/5 for me
Not much to say about it except #don'tbelievethehype

Supernatural (9) was a little messy tbh
3/5
It's got that stilted flow problem, and the gimmicks, while tempered to be more fair to sightreaders, are still a bit too obnoxious

Surf was fun
but it was really misrated (should've been a 10)
but it was SO FUN
4/5
See, there's a song that does gimmicks well
The effects aren't obnoxious and there are ample tells

Synthesizers (10) gets a 3.5/5
It was fun, but I did notice a bunch of ghost rhythms
The 8 gets a 4/5 though
1 minor bit of odd flow, but overall a very solid chart that felt consistent and most importantly fun

THE 6TH KAC gets a 1.5/5 from me
Good idea, but the sync was bunk and the gimmicks were plain unsightreadable

Pretty happy with the execution of The Werewolf (10)
4/5
Didn't go overboard, kept on sync with the myriad of gradual tempo shifts, and the patterns were creative.
The Werewolf (9) was close to matching the 10
3.5/5
but I felt the difficulty balance was a little off
First quarter was neutered, second quarter was a bit much, then the speedup was about what I was expecting

Xenogenesis was okay, 3.5/5 from me
It didn't do anything wrong and was decently fun, but it wasn't structurally that interesting
plus I get bored of standard ITG-fan style easily

"bing bong"
So I don't know how it happened, but apparently the way I acquired the audio caused the audio to be quieter in the midrange. I did not intentionally EQ it. It is strange how it didn't happen for Rich Boy, since I obtained the audio the same way. I will make sure that doesn't happen again Oops

Anyway I apologize for doubting you ROOK (I was honestly surprised how I didn't notice it myself), and thanks for pointing it out.

THE 6TH KAC gets a 1.5/5 from me
Good idea, but the sync was bunk and the gimmicks were plain unsightreadable

Huh, was the sync that bad? (Was anyone else having issues with that?) I have been having a bit of trouble finding a suitable global offset. Something happens when I load up StepMania where I have to adjust it relatively often...It's fine one day, then the next time I open it up, things are off-sync (okay, maybe it's not quite that often, but I think you get the point)

EDIT:In addition to that global offset issue I think I may have figured out one source of possible mis-syncs. If you haven't voted yet, I would appreciate if you made this change in your .sm file (remove the red text and insert the blue text)
Never mind what was here before. What I suggested earlier actually made it WORSE.

(Still same as before)
As for the gimmicks, yes they're not necessarily easy to pick up on a first-play basis, but that's kind of the point in a way. They make more sense the second time around and they're all meant to accent certain elements of the song that constant BPM doesn't do justice. Learning all the gimmicks/speed changes is part of the fun, at least for me (when there's actually a basis for them).

I skimmed some reviews before I did mine and it seemed like people were excited about Snakeman. Guess I misread Supernatural. Either way, I didn't have much to say about the simfile. Nothing bad, but nothing of note either.
